Bake-when-ready Chocolate Chip cookie dough?

My great grandmother used to make a batch of dough at the beginning of the week and bake cookies all week long. If keeping them for more than a week, freezing is best. Freezing separately is a good idea, so they don't stick together.

Inexpensive grocery items that are surprisingly good

Lucrene butter from Safeway is really good. I also am a big fan of the Kroger brand okra, that is cheaper than the other brands.

Sunflower Market here in CO has a lot of great brand named stuff that is sometimes as much as half off the price of the other brands. I had some excellent fresh tortillas for 99 cents, as opposed to paying $2.69 for the mission brand. Their kalamata olives were $3 cheaper per jar, and just as good!

My father used to lightly soak some country ham in coffee before cooking it. It always gave it a unique flavor.

Regarding Girl Scout Cookies

Oh man I almost ate an entire box on lemon chalets in one sitting. I made myself feel a little better about it by convincing myself the box was smaller than the thin mints or the peanut butter sandwiches :)

Can you freeze chopped onions?

Thanks everyone! I'll use them as long as possible, then freeze them when their shelf life is over. I make lots of soups and stews so that would work just fine. Thanks!

How long are dried beans good?

I've heard that dried beans last forever. I don't doubt that they "last" as I'm sure they aren't "bad" but I have to wonder if they will still taste any good. I've had a bag of garbonzo beans in my pantry for about 2 years now. Will they still taste good if I cook them?

Your best recipes that use Splenda

My mom used splenda in lieu of sugar her cranberry salad (which uses jello) and it turned out great! No one noticed.

Can you freeze chopped onions?

Hi,

I bought a big bag of onions for $2. There are six onions, and I live alone, so I cook for one. I know they stay good a long time, but I'm sure I can't use them before they will go bad. They sell chopped onion in the freezer section of the grocery store, so I should just be able to chop them and freeze them right?

Once I freeze them, how long will they last without being freezer burned?

Thanks guys!

Best Walgreens' Chocolate

Has anyone noticed that the big Ghirardeli chcoloate bars have great ingredients, but the smaller individually wrapped blocks have high fructose corn syrup? What a disappointment!

What kind of pasta do you buy/like?

Usually, I buy whichever wheat pasta is on sale. Barilla is good, and There is one in a brown box, I think its called Healthy Harvest? I buy both, and the only thing that decides for me is which is on sale!

Buying Organic?

I buy organic milk and eggs because I want to avoid the extra hormones and they taste SO much better. I also buy organic broths. Has anyone else noticed that chicken broth that isn't organic is dark brown and smells like pee instead of being the color and actual smell of chicken? I usually buy organic carrots because they are the cheapest root veggie I can find in organic. Also, I pick free-range meat if I can't afford organic. There is a local farmers market here in Denver that had fresh meat and produce that isn't exactly organic, but its either farm fresh or comes from a local farmer. That is good enough for me!

Lifespan of meatballs?

Yea, I am with you there. My first Thanksgiving, I panicked because my turkey sat out too long, and I was afraid it had sat in the danger zone. My mother assured me that when she was a kid, her parents left the turkey out at lunch, put a piece of foil over it, and then reheated it at dinner, and no one died :) I used to be really crazy about food safety, and I'm still overly cautious, but not to the point where I'm obsessive compulsive. In my opinion, for home use, its probably not as big of a deal. However for commercial use, I'd say the rules are quite different since the food is on a much larger scale and goes to a lot more people who may all have different tolerances.

I love my Lodge cast iron dutch oven. I can't imagine using anything else. Though I can see you point, it is quite heavy. However, carrying it around makes me feel less guilty about cooking in lieu of going to the gym. ;)

Sriracha Chili Sauce Condiment or Crack?!

I do that too!!! I put it in my eggs, my stirfry, eat it on pizza, but it in burritos! There are very few things that I dont put it on! I got addicted in college with a local bakery made a bread called a "cheese round" which was essentially a mini pizza with no tomato sauce. Sometimes they had veggies on them, some times they were plain. But they had a dipping sauce that you could get, and it was olive oil, cracked pepper and Sriracha sauce. I had dreams about that stuff!!!! Eventually one dipping sauce wasn't enough, had to get two! You are not alone.

Help learning to make soup

I grew up in the South, where the ingredients are pretty basic, but the cook times are longer. My mom never seasons with anything other than salt and pepper, and her soups are fantastic! The trick is she lets them cook for a really long time to allow the flavors to marry. Maybe if you start out with few herbs and longer cook times, then as you get more comfortable ease into adding extra herbs and shorten the cook times.
