Highland Kitchen ?

update went again last night with party of six:
again very friendly and affable waitstaff and good service all around. general response on drinks: bloodhound-very good, bourbon smash-very good, aj ginger beer-spicy and very refreshing, caphriana-very good. all said they would get again

apps - deviled eggs, tasty! interesting app to start with- calmari, spicy but good ( i didnot have and cant remark on chewiness) -chili cheese fries, spicy and tasty, nice alternate to nachos

entrees - oyster po boy, yummy, could have plate of these with just the remoulade on side, crunchy and went well with toasted bread-
curried goat stew, tasty but pretty spicy you must be up for spicy to have it -
pulled pork sandwich, north carolina vinegar inspired, laden with vinegar and pretty spicy, not to the recipients liking we all tried and some liked and some didn't -
pork loin - served a bit to rare but good taste, wouldnt get again but would get other items again.

dessert
chocolate cake with choc ice cream - airy but lovely cake, ice cream divine!
apple crisp with cinnamon ice cream - really nicely done, apples perfect crisp (made with granny smith) streusel nice balance of crunch and soft, i would get again but would go straight for chocolate next time.

dinner for six with two cocktails each : 160 before tip. gotta say that it wound up to be fun, tasty and economical night for all

Highland Kitchen ?

I have been twice. Once with toddler in tow early for saturday night. lots of families getting in a decent meal before the later crowd comes in. service was absolutely fine-all staff very nice and smily. it was really really friendly and easy. next time was mid week later for sandwich with spouse. again friendly and service was quick. I am so glad something fun and interesting has opened up in this area. makes it easier to pop down the street rather than drive to davis or union-rock on somerville!
i recommend the following menu items:
rueben cuban - tangy and tasty, fries were not crispy but tasty and went well with reuben sauce:)
burger - yummy-nice bun just a good solid burger with tasty ground beef
mac and cheese - small portion perfect as a side. rich not too creamy but tasty and filling
chili - yum! spicy but not too hot
salad with buttermilk - good to have with a side not to filling on its own
beers - nice selection but they keep running out of smuttynose!
cobb salad - meh its fine its a simple cobb.
other dishes that looked really good:
curried goat stew - oh so fragrant from the table next door-their dish was completely cleaned by the accompanying crusty bread
hanger steak (i think) looked really good
yay i will be happy to go back

the great croissant hunt

i happen to be by japonaise bakery at porter square bldg. i picked up crossiant and was really delighted. it was buttery, very flaky and really tasty. I also picked up a donut twist, an azaki cream and some other goodies. after a long morning of errands, none of these lasted the few blocks to my house......and they were all fresh and tasty. i would definitely go back for the crossiants!

YoMa (Burmese)

went there saturday around 8 pm. the hostess was friendly and the place was clean. i really wished i remembered what to order from this thread. what we ordered did not seem to represent the best of the menu. we started with a plate of mixed apps (forget name) fried tofu, cripsy soy or corn wafers and roasted eggplant in fried rice wrapper. all were edible but not a lot of depth. the spicy sauce with them help to give some depth. for main i got the coconut chicken noodle soup. the vermecilli was a little overdone for me along with the soup being more starchy and saucy. i squeezed a lot more lime and was able to eat a little more but honestly i wouldnt get it again. my DC had the pork stew. it was good. it had a smaller portion but a lot more flavor and spice. over all i was really intrigued by the menu but really dumbfounded on burmese food. any suggestions on what i should really make the trek out again for?

Weekend lunch in Hull

i forget if bridgemans does lunch. if they do, go there. get a second floor table next to the front windows. if you want great views and a cocktail go to the ocean club (on the rocks at the end of nantasket) the food is not worth the trouble. but the staff is friendly and location is nice. i also recommend driving into cohasset and going to french memories and getting some pastry-very nice. i have heard the red lion in cohasset is a nice place but it was very second hand. the town is lovely to drive around in. if you are staying at the clarion i also recommend barefoot bobs or red parrot for local flavor in hull. although the bikers will be gone for the season, there should be a few regulars keeping the seats warm.

bloc 11 and kick*ss cupcakes-yay sugarbuzz!

my sweet tooth led me down a wicked trail while running errands today! i popped into bloc 11 to see if they had anything sweet, and to check the place out. very neat space and all the workers were very friendly and hospitable. i loved the nooks and wider front seating space. i got a raspberry shortbread bar and it was pretty yummy. i get the same ones at rosies bakery so i am guessing they also get them from rosies. they are building a patio on the side for outdoor seating-that will be a great alternative to neighborhood rest nearby. im pretty psyched about how union sq is getting hipper by the minute.

i then was driving to davis and there was a parking space right next to kick*ss. so i HAD to try, right? the vibe was as others have said, not the friendliest. i was suprised at how small the space was. it is really set up to get your stuff and go. i do like how the cases are see through so you can see the decorating happen behind the scenes. i got a simple yellow with chocolate frost and a vegan punk-cin and left before i could do more damage to my cavities. yellow cake was suprisingly dry but i have had worse. the choc frost was good. simple straightforward and CHOCOLATE. it was not a buttercream but a really nice fudgy and firm texture. if the cake was a bit more moist it would have been heaven. the vegan punk-cin was really really moist and tasty. i was really impressed with the flavors. the cake was pumkpin with a touch of something (five spice? cardomom?). the frost was a really nice cin, spice and sugar. i couldnt believe that after all i had consumed-i really wanted to go back and get another vegan cupcake!
I wasnt to put off by the price of the cupcakes. i have spent the same or more on not so great stuff. I feel that the quality of the baking is good and i will go back for vegan cupcakes for sure! i will just have to try more product to further my "research"
i do hope they come out with a mini muffin line where i can try more for less dollars each-more fun-more yum

Chipolte in Davis?

wow it is getting quite heated in this post. i wish the food at chipolte was this spicy!
i went for lunch. meh. i was pretty bored with the place, the food and the whole set up. i got a chicken burrito with med salsa and pinto beans. it was oookk. i did feel like it was burritos for dummies. the vibe is remniscent of a mall or a good airport. i would rather give my dollars to a local average place like taco loco or lupitas. when in davis ill probably go back to annas if burrito needed.

Myers & Chang

Went with two girlfriends last week. ironically same night as ana sortun and her party and ihsan from formaggio and his party. joanne chang and chris myers were running around checking on things. it was a fun night to be there admist the action.

we sat at the high tables and my dcs had beer from upper new york (nice/bitter) i had lychee drink (really sweet-would recommend if you are going to get spicy food)
we had the following and i would go back for: spareribs, pork buns, scallion pancake, dumplings, beef and noodles and the lovely macaroons that accompanied the check. We could have done without the lettuce wraps (stinky bamboo shoots really overpowered the dish for us all)

The space got very loud as the night went on. we think they actually turned the music up-which was more distracting than delightful. the food came out as before noted by others; as it is cooked. this was fine and actually part of the charm. the bill was not outrageous and we were very full when we left (but over did it with an ice cream splurge at picco)

I would go back to Myers and Chang for sure. I would make sure to get there earlier than 8 and plan on only being there for a few dishes. this would be a perfect lunch place if i worked in the area!

Yoki at Station Landing

Went yesterday for lunch with DC around 1:30. I have read posts on Yelp and wanted to try. Very welcoming and clean. Decor was really neutral with a few flat screens on cnn. We sat in booths and both had the bento box with teriyaki chicken. Server was friendly and fairly quick (except at the end when we had to get up to get our check after being done with food for 15 mins)

miso soup as a starter, nice and simple. bento was good. three pcs california roll were pretty good. the tempura was really good-light and tasty. the teriyaki was ok. it was more cooked chix cutlet with ladled teryaki sauce. the chix was fine and tender. the ginger dressing served on the greens was a nice surprise, a lot of ginger and really good. the rice was really yummy. wonderful scented and plently sticky. nice bits of fresh pineapple and berries to finish.

overall a good experience and i would like to go back and try their noodles and sushi

Les Zygomates- sad sad night

we sat on the side with no music. I was told this was the bistro side but that could be up to interpretation. the DC that frequents talked to the mgr when we left. I am fine to go back and enjoy some wine. I was just really really saddened to feel such a drop in food and service. last time i was there was in January and it was ok but nothing like a few years ago. i feel like they are struggling and not even trying to strive for what they could be. I still have hope for the place but a strong hand from the FOH would be welcomed.

Les Zygomates- sad sad night

met up with some friends and we decided to grab dinner at les zyg.
we sat bistro side so we could chat and catch up. our waiter came over and had the manner of a train conductor- in the annoying loud way when they talk AT you and quickly leave

when he came back to order one DC asked to talk to the somm Geoffrey. we have always liked his manner and wine selections. the waiter looked liked we had boiled his slippers. and then, it seemed, he was done with us for the evening.

more bread was asked for twice, no more replacement bread until the dinner courses were served. this wouldnt have been bad if there wasnt the twenty minute gap between clearing salads and entree arrival. and we ask three people. the salads were passable. we all had the beet with goat cheese. one DC got the prix fixe and as a result got the crumbles of goat instead of a slice like we had-it might be bistro style but it was pretty glaring when we looked at them all together.

I had an empty glass of water and i was eating ice chips (very thirsty after vinegary salad) and wound up drinking my DC's and then eating their ice chips, everytime i tried to flag down a pitcher i became invisible.

entrees: mine was rabbit; over salted but the texture of the rabbit was fine. the rice was um how can i even describe...like minute rice. seriously the grains were splitting all over the place and it had clearly been left to soak...for a long time. i cant believe i paid 27 dollars for this-all while eating ice chips-oh i did finally get up and go to the bar where 4 waitstaff were chatting and asked our waiter for water. this was just embarrasing-i didnt want to but he filled the next table without even glancing over or asking how everything was. however all the waitstaff did have quite a conference going on at the bar, the waiter seemed more upset that he had to actually wait on our table for the rest of the night- yay service!

DC had prix fixe hanger-very tough and not pleasurable to eat-ug strike two

other DC had lamb shank - passable but honestly a little too salted -is the entire kitchen staff smoking menthols without filters!!????? what happened to their palettes?

our entrees were cleared and waiter gave a ramekin of chocolate discs-the kind used for melting choc-it was a nice gesture but ug he actually was giving us the eye after this
another waitress came over and took our wine bottle and tried to clear our glasses-we had to ask her to stop-there was still a full glass of wine left - GO TEAM! she then seemed to glare from the conference at the bar. hmmm when you expect friendlyness-you may get the opposite...ok

dessert- had cassis sorbet - to much lemon. creme brulee- i liked it one DC thought it not rich enough. i like it for its not to cloying taste. i must admit it was very milky and not creamy or rich. but at this point we were asking ourselves "could this have come from a mix?"

the atmosphere is still nice but i would only go back to talk to geoffrey and order some nice wines off his list.

The Independent, Somerville - worst meal in a long time

four years ago i lived around the corner and would frequent and it was always decent food but the vibe in general was non-descript. i still frequent union but really only go to the bar at independent. i feel the menu and food are tired and the staff uninterested. *sigh how i wish the nog was still around there....

Jamesgate bummer

i too had a dissapointing encounter with jamesgate food. i met some friends there last april and had to send calamari back to be finished in the fryer (served very limp) and had some amazingly bad nachos. after this my friends and I decided to just stick to the beer and meet somewhere else for dinner the next week.
I wonder if they should get their fryer checked and their kitchen lights and tastebuds brightend?

Looking for lunch in PDX airport or on drive to Seattle

We will be arriving around lunch time Thursday morning. This is husbands first time in the area ( I lived there a while ago) I havent been back for a few years. I would love to just drive into the hawthorne district for quick lunch but we really have to make good time to Seattle first day in. Rehearsal dinner to make in Seattle
Are there any places to grab a decent lunch in the airport or any decent taquerias off 205 or I-5?

Thank you thank you in advance!

you are correct about that. although there are some of the same items available-not all. and this is why i would always choose formaggio over whole foods. Ihsan is a local treasure for sure!

I have started walking in area and always wanted to go. The outdoor seating and overall look is pretty interesting. But I have heard such a mishmash of service and food reviews.

Lyndell's--that was not a black and white cookie

i personally feel like lyndells is good at opening cans and containers of pre made stuff but not a real bakery. I remember asking for an ingredient list and being told it was impossible because "all the containers have their own ingredients" !!!
I cant believe they actually said this-out loud-!
