waistedinkerrville's Profile
I-20 Between Dallas and Van Horn
You'll be passing close to the best chicken fried steak in Texas. Mary's cafe in Strawn. Turn north on TX 16...it's only a couple miles off I-20. We usually lunch in Van Horn on our way to overnighting in Las Cruces and the only place we have eaten at is Chuy's, a so-so Mexican place noteworthy for the fact that John Madden always had his bus stop there to take out a particlular dish he liked. He dropped off a bunch of NFL memorabilia, which doesn't improve the food, but it makes the wait more interesting.
West Texas Lunch Near I-10?
Gotta pretty much agree with Lambowner, but a person has to eat so we have found Chuy's in Van Horn will get us through the day. Probably by now you have discovered that Monahans is not on I-10.
Wolf Brand Chili Clone
Actually, I been eating it for years. It used to be you could find unidentifiable chunks in it but those have mercifully disappeared.
Wolf Brand Chili Clone
So ConAgra is trying to poison me with Sodium Tripolyphosphate. Does the FDA know this? While they're at it, why not ban oxygen...everyone who ever breathed it died, or will. I will go on enjoyin' Wolf Brand now knowing that it's cleanin' my insides in addition to bein great tastin'.
Central Texas Hot Guts Project
I bought 15 lbs of Southside's sausage a few years ago. It is long gone, but I still have my tee saying "I love their guts." I thought it rather good, especially after having Kaspar's. But then, I like Wolf Brand Chili and Maid-Rites. Wuddoino?
Chili in Texas
So ConAgra is trying to poison me with Sodium Tripolyohosphate. I wonder why the FDA doesn't know this? For that matter, why don't they outlaw oxygen; everyone who ever breathed it died, or will. I'll keep eatin' Wolf Brand, now knowing it's cleanin' my insides as well as bein' great tastin'.
Chili in Texas
Wolf Brand Chili, no beans, is the reason there are few chili parlors in Texas. Except for my Frank Tolbert recipe which takes three days to make for 60 close friends, I just pop a can of Wolf Brand when I get the urge.
Seeking Lunch Suggestions for Fredericksburg???
Everything in Fredericksburg is overpriced. To eat that is. Drivers licences are competitive.
Best Barbecue Only You Know About...
Salt Lick now has an outlet at Bergstrom Airport in Austin. Haven't eaten there, but I have in Driftwood. I was not impressed. Not near as good as the L towns: Llano, Lexington, Lockhart and Luling.

Shipped Lockhart BBQ
I have ordered brisket from Snows and it was as good as any I've had at the smoker site which includes Llano, Lockhart and Luling. Thaw it in the refrigerator for a day, then heat it at 225 deg. You won't regret it.
Cranky Frank's
I haven't been there in years, which is a negative testimonial I guess. Last time I was there, it was okay so, yes, go.
For future reference, Cooper's at Junction, TX?
Chimayo Joe, you didn't miss a thing. There's a very good reason you never heard of it.
Road Trip Phoenix, AZ to Corpus Christi, TX on I-10 East any recs? might stop at Fort Stockton
In my several experiences, there is no good food in Ft. Stockton. We do lunch in Van Horn at Chuy's which is okay tex-mex. It was also the favorite stop for John Madden when he was busing between games. He left them lots of NFL memorabilia which doesn't improve the food any, but it helps to while away the wait.
I agree 100% with texasredtop about Cooper's and Alamo Springs.
Absolute best burger in Texas?
I knew that would get a rise out of somebody. Sure it's a burger, just not a very tight one.
Texas Monthly's Top 50 Texas BBQ Joints
Ah, the price of fame. In 1997, TM put Buddy's BBQ in Kerrville in the top 50. On a house buying trip here, we had lunch there and it was superb. I had the cabrito. 4 months later we moved here to discover Buddy's had closed. The reason: Buddy, his wife and brother and sister-in-law (or vice versa), all retired, had opened the place as a hobby and the ensuing acclaim was too much for them to handle...or so we were told. The grounds are now the home of the Humane Society, to add a tad more irony to the story.
Best BBQ in Texas
I bought a brisket on-line last month from Snow's. It came next-day delivery frozen. I allowed two days in the fridge for it to thaw, let it come to room temp, then wrapped it in foil with a little water; put it in a propane oven outdoors at 225 F for 2 hours. Best in Texas! Serve your BBQ sauce (if you must) slightly warmed on the side. I use Snow's sauce or Red Mud. Enjoy!
Houston and Hill Country Best Sausage
On a rec on this Board, we stopped in Weimar and bought 10 lbs of Kaspar's sausage. It was 10 times too much. Elgin's Southside Mkt is still the best.
Luling TX
I never before heard of anybody eating anywhere other than City Market in Luling. I guess if I lived there I might need some variety from time to time but...that's like driving to Lockhart for a Big Mac ;-)

WHO has the smokiest meats ?

Order a brisket from this place. It will be shipped on Tuesday and delivered to you on Wednesday frozen. Thaw it in the fridge, then heat it in foil with a bit of water. You will then eat the best brisket in Texas (which means the world). You may have to take a package deal: a slab of spareribs and a bottle of sauce. You won't be disappointed in any of it.
Best BBQ in Texas
The best brisket in Texas, hands down, is Snow's in Lexington. And I'm talkin' on-line order, UPS next day delivery; comes frozen, but if you thaw and warm it right it's worth every high-end dollar it costs you. They ship on Tuesdays. I hope someday to have a reason to be in Lexington on a Saturday morning.
Get Me to Snow's On Time!
And here's another bit of good news about Snow's: I ordered on-line the brisket to be shipped to me by UPS Next Day. It came frozen, along with a package deal order of spare ribs and a bottle of sauce. After thawing in the refrigerator, we brought it up to eating temp wrapped in foil with a bit of water to create moistening steam.
This is the best smoked brisket in my experience, which includes all the 5 star Texas joints . We shared with equally q-wise friends and they agree (except for one guy who refused to admit it's better than what he smokes [it is]). The ribs are so-so okay and the sauce is outstanding. If it's this good after being frozen, I can only imagine what it must be like on a Saturday morning in Lexington. Forget the expense and order some on-line...you won't regret it.
Junction, TX: Cooper's Bar-B-Q - "The original Cooper's. Family run since 1959"
Having eaten que at City Mkt, Smitty's, Blacks, Coopers Llano and Snows, I can say from experience that all of my visits (3 or 4) to Coopers in Junction have been disappointing. They try to do too much and everything suffers from it. The pork chop is good if it hasn't had a chance to dry out which is a very short window. I live less than an hour away and the place has absolutely no attraction for me.

Ameli near Kerrville?
Ameli was an eatery north of I-10 exit 505. It was right outside the gates of my subdivision. It's been closed for nearly two years and I'm glad you never found it. The burgers were good but that was about it. The worst home made chili ever and the owner was Mexican. Please try River's Edge just south of the intersection of Junction Hwy and Harper Rd on Guadeloupe. Lunch T - F 11 - 2:30; dinner T- S 5 - 9.
Ameli near Kerrville?
River's Edge, A Tuscan Grill - will totally change your mind about Kerrville. My wife, who should know, says Jacksonville is the sinkhole of Texas food. As to Mamacitas, I go there for the fish.
Talk on BBQ sauce in TEXAS
Look no further. Red Mud is the best! I just finished my last bottle in a 12 pac. Gotta order summore.

5 Best Stops on a TX/Southwest Roadtrip?
Heading east on I-10 from El Paso, you may find yourself in the middle of nowhere around lunch time. That would be Van Horn. There is a mexican restaurant on the N. side of the main drag named Chuy's whose claim to fame is that John Madden discovered it on one of his bus trips between NFL games and liked a chicken dish of theirs. Since then, whenever John (who has now mercifully retired) was transiting, he would phone ahead and get the dish to go and keep on busing. Over the years, John endowed the place with lots of NFL memorabilia which gives it what little ambience it has. The food is nothing special, but if there's a better place to lunch out there I'd like to know it. BTW, the speed limit on I-10 out there is 80 so cheat a little and you'll be out of there quickly.
