Good Pho in Bethesda/Rockville area?
I've been getting Pho at Balle Vietnamese Deli on 355 in Rockville. Also good Hue style beef soup. Don't know about the place on Nicholson Lane anymore, but when I went there it was run by expat Koreans from Vietnam. Wasn't bad.
Turkish food and black and white cookies?
Levantes in Bethesda is good Turkish food(IMHO). I'm not Turkish, but heard about it from Turkish friends.
Some Things to do With Kimchi
KIMCHEE FRIED RICE!!!!!!!!
I'm no good with measurements for recipes, but if you are using your kimchee dregs you probably know how to make fried rice. I add:
squash
scallion
SPAM!
green bean
egg...........and any random yummies in my fridge.......
old rice from cooker
white pepper
touch of sesame oil
Add kimchee /juice at the end
The "One" place in the Baltimore area
Gotta be Joe Squared. For most types of cuisine DC area has a spot better than any in bmore, Joe Squared is unique.
Mid week dinner: Charles Theatre
Around happy hour time I would definitely check out Joe Squared. Place is pretty quiet early so for serious eating this is when you should drop in (around 8 or 9 it starts to fill up with drinkers and once the DJ's show it is more of a nightclub atmosphere). I hadn't been there in a while but they seem to have perfected their pizza dough, it has the right amount of salt (more) and a better chewiness. Seem to have upped the service level as well. I'd also recommend Nok Won (sp?)the new Korean joint on 20th in the old U Jung location. Superb beef and a badass seafood pancake, but a bit more of a walk than Joe Squared.
Finally went to Ruan Thai in Silver Spring on the advice of this board. Hmmm...
Steve- You should definitely try Ruan Thai again, because I think you would enjoy it much more if you ordered a little differently. I have never been to this particular place (I went once but there was a 45 minute wait for a table), but when I eat Thai food with friends we always have several different dishes (including "appetizer" types) on the table at the same time, and everyone shares in order to experience a wider variety of flavors. To sit down and attack a whopping plate of pad thai alone makes me a bit queasy, and I enjoy pad thai. If you are buying a quick lunch from a street vendor, ok, but not at a sit down restaurant. Try ordering a few different things, from milder to hot, share with your dining partners and you will certainly have a more enjoyable meal.
what to eat at joe squared?
Try the spaghetti and meatball pizza, sounded strange at first but is one of the best pizzas I have tried. The meat lovers has some fantastic capicola that would taste great ala carte, surprising to find on a pizza. And make sure to try some rum, this place has like 50 different bottles.
Fried Chicken -- Baltimore/Towson?
Kennedey Fried Chicken near Greenmount and 33rd. Not as cheap as Tyrone's, but much meatier pieces. Also a great sweet potato pie.
mango juice: what is it, and where to find it?
Try your local Lebanese/Middle Eastern grocery. There are a few different brands all of which are quite pulpy. Goya at most supermarkets, though as naruda says, this is more of a "drink".
