Emilio's Ballato, has anyone been recently, is it a great version of a red saucer ????

Carbone is not better. Very over-rated.

Great dining spots in NYC w no signs outside building!!?? Why?

Back in the day, the Gaslight Club had no sign. Just a gaslight outside and you had to have a key to enter.

Sushi Azabu New Chef Inquiry - top tier?

Terado went back to Japan for training. He was the star chef there. New guy is not as talented. It is probably not "bad" though. Just not as good.

What is NYC without Chinese FOod? Doriental, Bill Hong and Tai Hong Lau. All gone.

Weighing Nakazawa vs Ichimura

Ichi makes it occasionally. He does not see it as a necessity.

Weighing Nakazawa vs Ichimura

There is no comparison.

Ichimura has been doing this for decades and can do it all. And can do things no one else in NYC can.

Nakazawa has been making sushi a few short years and is a one trick pony, nigiri.

Yasuda v 15 East v Ichimura

LOL,for me Yasuda is not even in the top flight of sushi restaurants in the City even when Yasuda was still there. I too had a bad experience there with Yasuda being a dh. And I know him since he first landed in America. But bottom line is that the sashimi sucks and they rush you through dinner and they serve the smallest nigiri in town. Cut every fish the same way.

I also think that Nakazawa is over-rated and is benefiting from fan boy blindness. It is good, but not that good. I do not care if I ever go again.

15 East and Ichimura are two of the best and not comparable styles. Different but both great.

I would throw Ushiwakamaru in there with Hide as third.

And I still love Seki. He does traditonal sushi for me and there are certain things like jellyfish that he does better than everyone else.

4 lunches in Madrid in mid-Sept; interesting food, 100-120 E a couple (w. wine)

I was just in Madrid, been many times. I was with a newbie.

Took her to Botin (old school), O Pazo (best seafood) and Tiridiana ( new school). Wanted to cover all the bases.

All were fantastic.

There are so many choices in Madrid now.

The Forum of the Twelve Caesars was one of the best EVER in NYC. They do not make them like that anymore. Maitre'Ds that were Cordon Bleu trained.

No one has mentioned the Doriental Restaurant. Fantastic Chinese on E52nd.

I spent many a late night at the Brasserie.

And Bukhara for Indian. Without utensils.

Sushi Nakazawa, has anyone been recently ?????

True about the two at a time, but it is always two of the same fish.

Mr. Hiura in Fort Lee does it that way.

1 or 8 Sushi - Williamsburg - could be one of the best omakase meals in NYC

Fresh wasabi and shinko. Still delivering the goods here.

Sushi Nakazawa, has anyone been recently ?????

Yasuda was guilty of this too and he did it solely to rush you through the meal so he could turn over the seat.

Nigiri has a short shelf life. It should be eaten right as it is being put in front of you. Fives pieces? At least three will be ruined by the time you get to them, if not four. Theme schmeme. Serve the five, but one at a time and you still have your theme.

As far as the size of the pieces, Yasuda was famous among his peers for squeezing the most out of a pound of fish and thus profits, for serving fingernail size nigiri. It was something of a joke. Oh yeah, he was sizing to each customer's mouth. LOL

Funny, when I was in Tokyo, the sushi was served on the counter.

Sounds like someone has an ax to grind.
