sushiman's Profile

Seafood

Bartolota hands down the best seafood in Vegas.

Great new sushi restaurant in Tribeca

No ayu.

Great new sushi restaurant in Tribeca

Had dinner with Mr. Ichimura again this past week. Simply perfect.

Who makes the best bone marrow ?

Crispo

Best sushi/sashimi these days

He was at Hatsuhana after that. For the last 4 odd years.

Best sushi/sashimi these days

I guess that you never visited his old restaurant on 2nd Ave. Mr. Ichimura long was one of the best kept secrets on the NYC sushi scene. His old place was simply fantastic.

Kyo Ya...in need of a la carte suggestions!

I had the 11 course Kaiseki two weeks ago in the tatami room. Yummm. Really about 20 courses as some are more than one.

Great new sushi restaurant in Tribeca

I am not sure that there are a fixed number of seatings. Last orders are at 10. There are 8 seats and two small tables, one sort of private behind a screen.

The clientele will be more mixed here as he is part of Brushstroke and hence far more visible particularly to the non-Japanese community.

In any case, the place is fantastic.

Jaleo v Jullian Serrano

The tapas at Serrano are really amazingly good.

Las Vegas, Japanese, Sushi Off Strip

Sen is way outside the strip, but worth it. The chef,Shinji used to be the chef at the sushi bar in the Bellagio that was considered the best on the strip, that is now closed (now Yellowtail).

Chinese

On Strip, the place in the Ballagio.

What is the best italian restaurant on the strip?

Bartolotta, Scarpetta and B&B. B&B was a surprise. THink of it as a Batali greatest hits restaurants, well executed.

Casa Mono - Amazing Spanish Tapas made with the help of men and 'heaven'!!

In terms of style. Open kitchen right behind the counter. Cal Pep is all counter. Interaction with the chefs. Foodwise, they are nothing alike.

Kyo Ya... anyone tried it?

Just had the 11 course Kaiseki dinner in the tatami room. Fantastic.

It is more like 20 courses, as a few are doubled up and the zensei is half a dozen bites.

The place is genius.

How to Survive at Mesa Grill

Never thought it was good when it opened. Too much heat in the early days. You could not taste anything but heat.

Went recently with a friend that was curious after watching Flay on TV forever. The food is not just bland and uninteresting.

I never understood the big deal about this place.

Casa Mono - Amazing Spanish Tapas made with the help of men and 'heaven'!!

My biggest problem with Casa Mono is that there is too much food on each plate. If you are eating alone, you hardly get to sample the menu.

This place is modeled after Cal Pep in Barcelona. Over there they do not overload the portions.

Ichimurasan is a good friend and a great chef. We used to go to his restaurant about once a week until it closed. He is without a doubt one of the best in NYC when he can do things his way. Before this move he was at Hatsuhana, where his talents were not being taken advantage of.

I hope that he is given free rein here to do as he pleases. Sounds like that is the case.

Best caviar service in NYC

THere is a great caviar bar in the FOur Seasons Hotel. They are the only NYC outlet for an Italian caviar producer. It is farmed sturgeon and REALLY good. The best farmed caviar that I have ever had.

15 East - sushi bar or table?

I was being sarcastic.

15 East - sushi bar or table?

LOL, really? Smaller pieces at Yasuda. You must have a small mouth, as he sizes them to each customer. REALLY!!!

To the original post, if you are going to each sushi, sit at the bar if you are serious. It is NEVER the same at a table.

Best tapas in Manhattan?

The top two are the top two in the city.

Tia Pol is not what it used to be.

Casa Mono is great, but not really tapas.

Solera in midtown is under-rated.

Been to Don Peppe in Ozone Park lately?

Correct.

Best sushi in Manhattan

Kanoyama gets the biggest variety of fish of any restaurant in NYC. He pays whatever it takes to get whatever is in season. That is why his prices are high. You have to pay to play.

Best Italian Sausage

Not Manhattan, but the Meat Hook in Williamsburg is making some the best sausages anywhere. Italian and other really creative stuff.

Best sushi in Manhattan

Kazuo Yoshida worked at Jewel Bako a while back, I believe at the same time as Shimizu of 15 East. Then a bunch of years at Geisha in midtown. 1or 8 is constantly improving, as their business grows, so does the fish selection and quality. BTW, he prefers to serve bluefin and lately it has been coming from Boston.

Best sushi in Manhattan

Go Thursday or Friday. Call and ask which day they are getting the Anago. It will be one or the other.

Best sushi in Manhattan

So how do you explain all the Japanese that eat dinner there? Incuding one of the top tuna suppliers in NYC? They must not be reading those boards.

Best sushi in Manhattan

Seriously, just about any of the other top flight places. I am not kidding, but either Yasuda reserved the worst for me or he consistently gets very mediocore uni and BSes his customers into believing that it is good. Whenever I hear how good his uni is, I am always bewildered.

Variety does not equal quality. Good uni comes from many places. And the quality varies for many reasons, some seasonal, some not. I have had really good uni from about a dozen sources. They are just not all good at the same time.

LOL, quite frankly I always thought that the uni was the weakest thing that he serves.
