Recs needed for Fremont, CA
Chat Patta Corner is tasty - I like getting the sev puri.. mmm!
Yum's doesn't do dim sum, but dinner is always dependable for me - high quality, fresh ingredients and generally well-executed dishes. This place is way underrated on yelp (and sadly many mediocre to even bad restaurants get better reviews on yelp).
For dim sum, Mayflower in Union City is reliable and pretty good, particularly their ja leung (fried chinese donut wrapped in rice noodle) if you're not on a diet.
For activities, you might go for a hike to Mission Peak or Coyota Hills for a more leisurely walk.
Gelato Cake @ Sweet Orchid Gelato in Fremont
I tried this place the other day, and it's awesome! I love that each of the gelatos are made with thought and loving care by the owner, Leslie. She was super nice and happy to let us sample basically every flavor - everything ranging from your must-have hazelnut to more unusual flavors like red bean or chocolate bacon! I highly recommend the mango sorbetto - really tastes just like fresh juicy ripe mangoes! The prices are super reasonable - about $3.50 for a small cup, which includes two good-sized scoops of gelato. I'll have to go back to sample their fresh-made mochi - those looked super soft and delicious. Mmmmmm!
Not the Same Old Sandwich and Pizza Request
I second the recommendation for Cheeseboard.
If you do end up trying Pizzaiolo, please do post about your experience. I'd be interested to hear what you thought as I was pretty disappointed when I went there a couple of months ago.
Dim Sum in the Peninsula
Went there a couple of weeks ago to give it a shot given its proximity to our home, but it was mediocre (and overpriced) at best. There was one other table of Chinese people in the room, and they looked as sullen and unhappy as we were. (To be fair, there were a number of mixed race tables.) Our hearts went out to them, and we skedaddled our way out of there asap. With far better options just a 20 minute drive away, we won't be returning to Ming's.
Having said that, I do recognize that Ming's is a good place for some people, particularly those that are intimidated by big noisy, banquet-hall style places like Koi Palace (and by being surrounded so many Chinese people). The servers at Ming's speak English very well and by default (in fact, I couldn't even order in Cantonese because the waitresses were all Mandarin), they give you a fork and iced water right away without asking, and the decor is very tastefully done. Certainly doesn't feel like home to me, but I appreciate that a place like this opens up the world of dim sum to a population that might otherwise not want to eat it at all.
Best Mac & Cheese in the Peninsula?
Thanks for the recs!! Will try both Trader Joe's and the Creamery's.
Best Mac & Cheese in the Peninsula?
Where's your favorite place to get your mac & cheese fix on the Peninsula?
I've enjoyed the hearty entree of mac & cheese (mmm... with crunchy croutons) at Oak City Bar & Grill and the extra cheesy, more upscale mac & cheese side at Bistro Elan.
I have another hankerin' for gobs of piping hot cheese and carbs, all rolled into one, and would love to try a new place. Can you help a 'hound out?
HELP! Looking for restaurants in the Palo Alto area
Just for the record and for the sake of having a balanced viewpoint, Tofu House is really not that good. It's ok for the area, but hopefully not the best in the peninsula and certainly wouldn't hold a candle to some of the better Korean soondobu places in LA's ktown. The flavors are just not deep enough. It's quick and dirty comfort food.
So anyone looking for *amazing* soon tofu should be forewarned that Tofu House on El Camino serves up hot, tasty fare at relatively decent prices, but don't set your expectations too high if you've had really good soondobu before.
New pots and pans - moderate budget
I had an Ikea frying pan once. It was terrible. Save yourself the trouble and opt for better quality.
Chili Cook-off this weekend? (Pasadena)
A friend mentioned that there was going to be a chili cook-off on Huntington Drive in Pasadena this weekend. Does anyone know exactly where and when this event will take place?
I'm hooked --! La Zhi Rou Jia Mo
Just came back from a trip to China and had my first (and with your help, hopefully not last!) taste of those mouth-watering cured pork sandwiches at La Zhi Rou in downtown Xi'an. They're so tasty and addictive!
Can this be found in the greater LA area? If so, please point me in the right direction...!
Nanjiang Cuisine in San Gabriel and The Stuffed Sandwich in San Gabriel
It's safe to get the sub at the Stuffed Sandwich. Good value for what you get, and it's pretty much what you'd expect. Good for a casual lunch on a warm day.
