Reasonably Priced Bakeries in Northern NJ?
for french bakeries la promenade is much more reasonable than either bon appetite or patisserie st. michel. i like certain things at b&w, but the selections and prices at maywood bakery are far greater. my company purchases doughnuts and danishes from there on a daily basis for the staff.

does the cost for chicken at wholesale differ for thai restaurants compared to any restaurant out there? if your friend asks for extra potatoes for their meal in a steakhouse or extra pasta at an italian restaurant, do they expect it for free there as well.

Help! How to mold butter?
i'm assuming you are using softend butter, but to me it sounds like the mold is warming up due to contact with your hands. try putting the mold in your freezer for at least and hour and wear insulated gloves when you press the butter or wrap the mold a couple of times with a towel. that should help you knock out a few more pats.
Prime rib & Yorkshire pudding?
add me to the list. i haven't had a good yorshire pudding in years.
Thanksgiving Turkey Takout

Strange restaurant event
i once tried to make reservations for two for new year's day dinner at a long established restaurant known for special occasions. the person asked what time I was looking for and i told her 7pm. she requested i hold which took her approximately 5 minutes to return. she then said she could fit us in at 8pm. when we arrived we were the only two people in the entire restaurant and for the whole evening, with the staff sitting at an opposite table staring at us and smoking cigarettes the entire time.
Deep-Fried Turkey
my understanding is the turkeys are deep fried then packaged. the turkey is reheated at home. they are advertised as fried turkey.
Menu Suggestions for a German meal
wursts are a must. pork and veal are also important to the german menu. schnitzels and sauerbraten with sort of poatoe and or spaetzle.
Take out Tipping
It appears to me from your two prior posts it has less to do with the perception of employees' demeanor of the three locations, but rather the freebies you receive from each business, or not.
Any Recs for What to Buy with Lobel's Gift Certificate?
Explaining how a process works is far from a suggestion or endorsement. In this case, by explaining in detail the process actually brings the negatives to light, not anything positive. I would also point out to you any family heirloom passed on through generations is re-gifting, not just fruitcake. :-)
Any Recs for What to Buy with Lobel's Gift Certificate?
You can re-gift to anyone you feel will appreciate and use the certificate better than yourself. Can you honestly say you have never done so with something you have been given in the past to a relative or friend. I have received many gift certificates in the past for retail stores or restaurants, and I have no problem giving them to others, family or friend. As with recent discussions with reference to expiration dates on gift certificates and gift cards, don't you think it better they are ultimately used, rather than not.
Most people I know are not shallow enough to expect conditions attached to giving out gifts as a pretense of genrosity, i.e., this is for you only. As for the question of being rude, don't you think it would be rude of the friend to even ask if the certificate was used? I would.
As for the chosing another meat other than the bacon, isn't that for the OP to decide.. I do see her mentioning any other meat she is interested in. Last, I do not recall ever suggesting she sell the certificate. That was done by others.
Any Recs for What to Buy with Lobel's Gift Certificate?
May I ask, what it is that you do not get? The OP clearly indicates she's less than thrilled with the shipping componet to order refrigerated food items. From her post, I take that the only item she is considering is the slab ov hickory smoked bacon which would cost her $72. Looking at Lobel's site, the bacon is actually $29.98, so the total isactually closer to $76. So yes, she is spending a bit more money above the $60 certificate value, but clearly to me by her words, even spending $16 above the certifcate value has concerns . Her main concern is she finds the shipping component wasteful and not cost effective for perisable items. The quality and reputation of Lobel's is not the main consideration for the use of this certificate and she feels there are quality options for similar products in her area without the added expense of shipping costs being attached. From her imformation provided, I do not feel she is comfortable spending over $70 for bacon, no matter how good it may be. She is looking for options and ideas for the best use of the certificate, and posssibly feedback on any items Lobel's sells that are not perishable.
Any Recs for What to Buy with Lobel's Gift Certificate?
My vote would be to re-gift the certificate a la Seinfled. I am not familiar selling on any other site other than eBay, but by the time you list the item and are charged the final value selling fee, the percentage charged to the seller is around 15% in the end. Selling on eBay would require the certificate to sold at a discount obviously. Let's say it is sold at a 25% discount ultimately. The net result after fees would be approximately $38. This in my opinion would be the most you could expect to receive from selling on eBay , but in reality, I would think most buyers would not offer you more than 50% for the certificate, which would bring it down to approximately $25 net if sold, which is no guarantee.
Where can I get a 14" deep sided skillet?
If you are asking about a straight sided pan, I believe they are known as "braziers". they are great for cooking or frying large amounts of chicken cutlets. I have a triple guage aluminum pan I picked up at a restaurant auction that is 24 inches and it fits over multiple burners which helps keep the heat up. I also have a 12 inch stainless steel pan with a thick bottom which I think is for those modern glass top smooth elements, but works equally as well with gas. It great for small roasts and a single roast chicken or two baby poussins and vegetables. Depending on your ideas for use, I recommend the side be at least two inches for oil splatter. 2.5 or 3 inches is better. I purchased the stainless steel pan in Macy's on sale for $9.99
This link will give you an idea of the pan. Home pans are much cheaper than the commercial ones shown.

fried calamari
This used oil idea is intriguing. I may have to put it to the test. You can also consider seasoning your flour with somethin like paprika, chili powder or cayenne mixed with cornmeal or semolina flour. for a more golden color. Othe spices to consider are curry and cumin for a different ethnic approach.
Which ham is better?
It is interesting to find out so many feel the shank portion is preferered and is easier to carve. Is that for presentation purposes or for meat itself. Myself, I purchase the whole fresh ham or the picnic shoulder whenever available. The reduced overall price per pound and the fact pork is always reasonable makes the choice easy for me. I also prefer the rump portion's meat better for sandwiches and the shank portion for soups.
Duck Fat: What do you use it with?
As my User Name suggests, the absolute best use of duck fate is for basting eggs over low flame temperature.
GE mid-size microwave: nay, or maybe yea?
Recently purchased a similar GE model based on the recommendation of the Store Manager at the local PC Richards. I can say without hesitation this is the worst microwave oven I or my family has ever puchased, including models from ove 20 years ago. Maybe I just got a bad one, but I can't wait for it to break so I can go out and purchase a Sharp or Panasonic. The GE doesn't heat up anything with consistency, including coffee. Even on a two minute sttting it requires an additional two minutes. Even old models heated up coffee in 60 seconds or less.
