Off the Deck, Atlantic Highlands

We also tried it several weeks ago for dinner. There were four of us and we chose to dine outside since it was a nice evening. The server left a lot to be desired. She unfortunatley, was not very attentive for refills on our drinks and also got the side orders confused on two of the dinners. Instead of taking the enitre dinner back to keep it warm so that it could be served in it's entirety, she left the main course behind and by the time she brought out the correct side dish, both my DH and his friend where finished. I can't recall exactly what everyone had but two of us ordered a pasta dish with chicken in some sort of cream sauce. It was not bad but also not memorable. I think if you stick to the basics there (appies and sandwiches and possibly salads) you are better off. However, my biggest complaint is that because they allow smoking, I felt like I was dining in an ashtray. Next time (if there is one) I guess I will have to miss out on the the lovely evening and stay inside to avoid this.

There used to be a good cheap Italian joint named Patty's not far from the hospital. I googled it and it seems to still be othre. It is on Remsen Ave. Haven't been there in quite some time but when I worked at Rutgers it was a favortie place for my co-workers to gather after work.

Restaurant Nicholas Disappoints and Under-Delivers

hot food - Thank you for your review. It is actually good to know that even this highly coveted establishment has it's faults. Apparently, they too are mortal. I have not yet had the opportunity to try Nicholas since, for our wallets, it's price tag warrants a special occasion. However, you bring up a good point about the view. Although my DH and I enjoy good food, we also are very concious of the ambiance around us and feel it is part of the total experiance so I thank you for bringing that point up. I will keep it in mind before I choose this for special occasion.

Lunch in Atlantic Highlands?

Citadel........funny you should mention that. Everytime we have gone there we are asked how long we plan to stay before they will seat us. I found that rather odd. Now I understand what is happening.

Pierogies At The Shore?

A family member recommended a Polish Deli at 816 Arnold Avenue in Point Pleasant for pierogies. I have not yet tried it myself but he grew up, as did I, in Perth Amboy. Between our relatives and the local churches, we are accustomed to the real deal so I will trust his recommendation. Hope they have lekvar..........my favorite!!

What is your favorite new Monmouth County Discovery?

We stumbled upon Manna's last night. We were there to find the Mix and have a martini. As we were walking up and down Brighton Ave trying to find it, some women who was driving by sensed we were lost and looking for something. She actually stopped her car in traffc, rolled down her window, and asked if we were looking for a good place to eat. She then whole heartedly recoommend Manna's. It was not our intent to dine there, we were actually enroute to Kelly's for reubans. Having been lead in the right direction by divine intervention on other occasions, we took a chance. We were not disappointed. Started with warm semolina bread and butter. The we had a small personal pie as an appetizer. It was one of the best I have tasted around here. I had Rigatoni ala vodka. I enjoyed the sauce. It did not have the bite that you sometimes find with vodka sauces. It was gentle with good flavor. My DH had Chicken Fra Diablo. He raved about it. He said that so often he gets Fra Diablo that is so hot you lose the flavor. This was not that way at all. It was full of flavor with just a hint of spiceness. We mentioned this to our server and she said it was the owner's Grandmother's recipe and everyone that cooks there is of Italian descent and uses family recipes. The menu is small. They don't have the usual pizza parlor choices (such as ravioli, or lasagna). The prices are very reasonable. Our dinner came to under $45.00. We would definatley go back.

Cuban in Highlands

We dined there late last summer when they first opened. We sat outside which was lovely. The staff were all very knowledgeable about their dishes. We had the empandas for an appetizer. There were two (or maybe even three) on the plate of differant varities and are very very good. I had the skirt steak for dinner but honestly, I probably would not order it again because it was a bit dry. I have had this in other Cuban restaurants where it came with sauted onions an garlic on top. They did not serve it that way. It was basically just fried steak. I don't recall what my DH had but I know he enjoyed his dish. (sorry, it was several months ago). As for cocktails, we started the dinner with mojitos, which were very tasty and then switched to sangria. They do a nice sangria. My only disappointement was that they were out of plantains that night. Other than I would say it was very enjoyable especially if you are in the mood for a differant cuisine. I would go back.

Best burger in Mon/OC?

Well I guess I am going to have to give Barnacle's another try because my favortie burger joint............Neil's Original Oyster has closed up. Friends of ours were there for the last night. They closed in the middle of dinner with half the diners not being served yet. Oh well, time to join the Barnie Burger Brigade.

Julia's in Atlantic Highlands

We finally tried Julia's last night for a quick bite before a movie. We started with cocktails at the bar. I had a delightful martini that was Grey Goose and pear nectar. The sweetness of the nectar was masked by the abundance of the vodka and it was quite nice. My DH tried their Mojito. It was a bit too sweet for him. We decided to eat at the bar. I ordered a dish that sounded interesting. It was andouille sausage and roasted red peppers in a gorgonzola cheese and cream sauce over campanelli. My DH ordered a balsamic chicken dish served with fingerling potatoes and veggies. They brought out a basket of focaccia bread with a dipping sauce that was rather unique and very good. I am not sure of the ingrediants, meant to ask, but before I could our meals came out. Their kitchen was really quick. My meal was an interesting combination of flavors, However, it was very rich so I could only manage to eat a few fork fulls before being done because it was becoming overwhelming. I probably would have enjoyed that more as an appetizer portion. I brought it home but imagine that it will not reheat well because the sauce will probably seperate. My husband really enjoyed his chicken dish and there were no leftovers to worry about there. We split a creme brulee for dessert and enjoyed it. The bill came to just over $90 for the two of us (which included a wine for me with dinner, and a beer for him with dinner as well as one after dinner cocktail). We thought the quality was worthy of the prices and will probably go back again. Love the ambiance in there as well. It was redone nicely.

Flakey Tart - Atlantic Highlands.

I finally made it there myself yesterday afternoon. WOW. Hard to control yourself and choose what to buy. I brought home two Pan Chocolate, two scones, and a rasberry lindsor coffee cake. The Pan Chocolate was tried immediately based on all the comments here.At first bite I thought to myself, "It's a litte skimpy on the chocolate". Then I got a taste of what was inside. There may not be a lot in there but the richness and quality of the chocolate certainly makes up for it. We have been working on splitting the rest of the treats up. The scones have an amazing texture. They need nothing on them to be enjoyed. Usually I find scones to be dry if you don't add butter or cream cheese.........not these. They stand alone just fine. We have one that is a Turtle flavor (my dh says it's chocolate and nuts). The one I tried was Maple walnut. Great bakery. Glad it's close!

The Flakey Tart - OMG-My Review!

We happened upon The Flakey Tart when we were having unexpected guests over for dinner a few months ago. We had dinner covered but needed dessert. I sent my DH out in search of something. He found The Flakey Tart and brought home a Key Lime pie/tart (not sure what to call it..........had the consistency of a cheesecake). It was out of this world. Ther four of us blew through the whole thing because it was just that good. I haven't had the pleasure of shopping there myself but after all these reviews, I think that will be changing soon!

CJ Montana's Update

I went to CJ Montana's last night after a meeting with a group. We ordered lite fare since it was late. Nachos for me (I was a bit disappointed........lots of chips, olives and jalepenos, but not much meat or cheese). My dining companions each had a burger. One beef, one turkey. Both said they were good but there was not a lot of excitement such as "OH MY GOD THIS IS THE BEST" or anything of that sort. The fourth person had a small bowl of chili. Her reaction was much the same of the burger eaters. The service was outstanding. The atmosphere is pleasant. I will give it another shot in order to try their "proper" menu.

Yes to Kelly's but not in a long time. We tried to go there for lunch on New Year's Eve but he couldn't get one because they had a special menu due to an early party. I am not familar with Richard's. We will have to look into that one. Thanks.

CJ Montana's Update

The Globe is at 20 East Front St. in Red Bank. It is an sports bar that looks like many of the bars from my youth. It was our first time there and the "bar fare" was pretty good. Although I ordered fried mac n cheese as an appy and did not care for that at all. Pretty bland and they served it with marinara sauce which just doesn't go together in my book. However, I had a cheeseburger and was pretty pleased except for the roll. But I am not sure that the rolls of my youth (aka, flaky HARDROLLS) even exist anymore so perhaps I just need to learn to settle in that department because it is always my complaint about burgers. My husband had a reuben and he was pleased. He is very picky about his reubens and has not found one in Monmouth County that he likes so that was a positive. The rye bread was not very big but they stacked in pretty high and put the kraut in the middle so it made up for it. We sat at the bar, so I can't comment on the table service but the bartenders were good. The atomospher is very "Cheers" and we were welcomed even though it was our first time.

As for CJ Montana's, I am scheduled to try and go there again on Tuesday evening after a meeting with a group of folks. I'll let you know.

CJ Montana's Update

My husband and I tried to get in there last night at around 7 PM to give the pace a try. It was a mob scene. They were lined up just to get to the hostess stand so we didn't even find out how long of a wait there actually was. We walked out and I had to ask my husband if it was really Sunday night. Seemed more like a Friday or Saturday to me. Wow............they must be doing something right. I'll have to give it a try another time. We ended up at the Globe in RB.

Best Pizza in N.J.

Acutally, when they were in Perth Amboy you were able to buy containers of their home made sauce. I don't know if that tradition carried over the the next generation that is running the South Amboy location. I always order my pie well done because I enjoy the bit of burnt crust the brick oven gives it so I can't say I ever experianced what you did. So sorry you didn't enjoy it. I guess that's what makes the world go round........we all have our own palates.

BEST L.B.I resto in the winter

I was trying to think of Buckalews........thanks for bringing that up. I think better service in the off season is true of any shore establishment. If you don't get good service and decent food when they have the time to take care of you.........forget about the rush. My favorite place down there, although I think they close in the winter, is Terrace Tavern.

Best Pizza in N.J.

I know I am coming in late on this discussion but having grown up in Perth Amboy I am a die hard Scorintino's fan. I went through withdrawal when they were closed and in transition from Perth Amboy to South Amboy. Thank god they are back! They are the standard we judge all others by. We will try another pizza and say, "It's good, but it's not Scorintino's". I think, having read some of the negative comments, it is an acquired taste and those who love it will have no other. Generally, if you were from that area and did not like it, your alternate choice was Strawberry's Pub on Amboy Ave. on the border of PA and Woodbridge. Now that I am from Monmouth County, I would choose Val's or Brother's. Ocean County, Marucas. But again, all are a differant animal than my beloved Scorintino's.
