Where's the best fried chicken in the GTA ?
The new big Galleria is off York Mills, west of Don Mills. The building is attached to Dragon Pearl Buffet. The other smaller location is at Yonge just northof Steeles where the old Chapters used to be. Not sure if the Yonge location has fried chicken. The York Mills location has a giant cooking station island where they make a lot of dishes.
Where's the best fried chicken in the GTA ?
Teep, definitely worth mentioning!
Home of Hot Taste on Yonge and Glen Cameron is pretty good.
LCBO spring beer release - finally a good release
Heyy currycue, I was just at the Laird and Eglinton LCBO. I picked up the Westmalle, Lupulus, Weihenstephaner Vitus, and Panil. They've got one of the better uptown selections of beer. They have Affligem at that location, but I would get there quick if you want it because there were less than 10 bottles on the shelf!
Is there one great Japanese restaurant where the decor, lighting, and service reflect that?
Well in that case maybe you SHOULD check it out lol. The dishes that the people I went with liked were 1) maguro zuke-don, it's only on the lunch menu but I asked for it at dinner and they said yes 2) gindara 3) gyu tongue 4) BC tuna sashimi 5) osaka fried rice
Is there one great Japanese restaurant where the decor, lighting, and service reflect that?
I agree with Yuzu, I had a great dinner there. Really good service and it's pretty nice in there. I sat at the tables directly across from the sushi bar and my only small negative was that the tables are so close together when they're separated into single tables that I felt I was having dinner w my neighbours to the left and right of me. We were definitely eavesdropping on each other's conversations all night so it wouldn't be so romantic if that's what you're also looking for.
Guu is definitely fun for big groups so you can order a billion things and the decor is cool.
Izakaya Ju has alright food (some hits and some misses) and feels authentic but I'd say the room is pretty plain and sparse. Giant shower curtain entrance and cute plastic hearts over track lighting doesn't seem to fit your decor and lighting req.
Copper Bowl to whip meringue
Check out Tap Phuong in Chinatown. I haven't looked for copper bowls there but they seem to have everything and at reasonable prices.
Finding Meyer Lemons
I've bought them at Galati (Leslie and Cummer) before but can't remember the price.
ISO Liquorice Root
Not near the 401, but if you can't find it anywhere else, the Korean health food store on Augusta in Kensington Market has licorice root. They have whole pieces and also small cut/shredded pieces.
Spring Villa - Seldomly mentioned, Surprisingly good!
I tried to go there with my family on Family Day as well, but we showed up at 11am and it was a zoo! I only recall going there years ago so it was great to read your review. I'll have to make a trip there sometime soon on a quieter day.
Downtown Toronto : NO Malaysian, Singaporean, Indonesian as at 2010
lol, that's ok. I never actually had a chance to try D'rollz before they closed though.
I was speaking w a friend recently who had gone to Gourmet Malaysia. He said the wife of the couple that runs it is Indonesian so that may be a potential place to look for Indonesian food.
Soup Nutsy?
I also found their soup too salty when I tried their barley soup. It's not worth paying almost $10 for the soup w choice of two sides (fruit/veggie/bread).
Best store bought ramen noodle?
Second the Yamachan ramen. I went and looked for it at T&T after reading that thread and it was really good!
grandgourmet, if you want to trek up to Warden and Steeles, I saw them in Nov or Dec so I assume they still carry it now. It was in the refrigerated wall section that faces all the cooked food/bakery stuff closest to the front of the store.
Shopping Mall Food Court Favourites
Jumping into this SB versus TH mini-war ....
I actually thought Timmies tea was pretty blah when I've had it.... standard tea-crumbs in a bag type of tea. The full-leaf Tazo tea from Starbucks is a way better and you can get a refill (a new tea bag, not just a hot water refill) with the card.
Mentaiko in the GTA
I was just at J-town two days ago and they have it (Steeles, just East of Woodbine).
If I recall correctly, the retaurant right by J-town, Shiso Tree Cafe, used mentaiko in a pasta dish, but I could be wrong on this one.
best jin deui , matuan, jen dai, ma yuan or fried sesame balls in the GTA?
hi prima,
i haven't tried THAT many places, but my mom loves these sesame balls and we usually get it from the small chinese counter at Peanut Plaza... right outside the Tone Tai grocery store. We usually pick it up on Sunday mornings when we pass by and it's when he opens so they are really nice and crispy on the outside. We buy the ones with red bean filling, but I think he has plain and also some other similar dumpling ball that has meat in it (but it doesn't have sesame seeds on the outside)
Malaysian Restaurant
But Restoran Malaysia is also a good 20min drive from the closest subway stop..
Sorry I would suggest something but the place I get laksa from is nowhere near a subway station either!
Le Cafe Michi Experience
haha... So I ended up going to Le Cafe Michi about a week after your post. I was so serious about ordering the english trifle that I actually reserved it right when I saw it in the display case since there were only two left!
Our table of four had two desserts : the english trifle and the hazelnut cake. Everybody liked the english trifle best. The custard was smooth, fruits were fresh, and the whole thing put together was really good. Thanks for expanding my horizons!

Moving to Thornhill - Looking for some local recommendations please!
+1 Home of Hot Taste for their fried chicken. I get the Hot version and make sure you get the one that comes with bones, as they have another chicken dish that doesn't come with bones (it's not fried either but I know people who have mixed the two orders up so just mentioning!). I think they give you the choice of half chicken or full chicken. And yeah, it's not like other Korean restaurants where you get 6 different kinds of banchan. Here, you'll get lettuce salad and cubes of pickled radish.
I'm sure you must have seen it since it's right beside PAT :)
Le Cafe Michi and others?
Michi does have a lunch menu. It's on their first page... it actually offers the same at lunch and dinner except there is a price difference between the two.
Somebody posted a pic of the lunch/dinner specials page of the Cafe Michi menu here:

Ace Baguettes - bake at home
I just bought the frozen Premier Moisson baguettes from Costco last week. They're so good!! I think it was around $13 for 12 baguettes. The texture is great, I just toast it up with some butter and minced hardneck garlic. So yummy.
Good Portuguese other than Chiado
Oops, either he or I got it mixed it up, but he meant Peruvian :D ... and was thinking of El Fogon and some other El ____ place.

Good Portuguese other than Chiado
A couple months ago, friend of mine mentioned going to a good Portuguese place somewhere around St. Clair and Bathurst. Do you guys have any idea what it could be?
Le Cafe Michi Experience
mm, thanks for the pic, Charles, and thanks for the very detailed description Notorious P.I.G. Every time I've been there, I ordered their green tea cake, hehe, I'll have to try this english trifle you speak of!
best bakery?? midtown or downtown?
Second rahier, my fav bakery!! Actually, i'm not sure about their breads, but I love their croissants and danishes.
Patisserie La Cicogne would be my second pick for the area.
ISO Best Mexican Bun (something similar to Rotiboy)
When I was living for a year in Korea, there were these coffee bun places that were just starting to pop up everywhere and I got quite addicted to them! It's really just a mexican bun, but I love the topping, especially when it's fresh and crispy.
So where can I find something like this here? I'm craving it, thanks!!
Le Cafe Michi Experience
Yummy, somebody was JUST telling me about the Chirashi at Le Cafe Michi the other day. From your description, it sounds amazing. I always got their bbq eel and egg on rice dish whenever I went for lunch. This sounds somewhat similar and then topped with sashimi!
Do you have a picture? Is it big enough to share?

Korean-ish Restaurant Uptown
I'm late replying to your dinner request, but like szw, I'm also thinking that you could go to at least Sheppard and Yonge (and then anywhere along Yonge up to Steeles) to find a ton of Korean restaurants. My googlemapping says it's about 12 mins to Sheppard and Yonge! Then there are a bunch of threads with recommendations for that area.
Shiso Tree Cafe - An interesting 'Pasta' find inside J-Town!
I found this deal for Shiso Tree Cafe:

The funny thing is that the website link provided for Shiso Tree Cafe brings you to this thread LOL.
I want to try that Tarako pasta, looks good!
desperately seeking holland herring in Toronto!
ok, just asked my dad about the holland herring and he says that Niemeyer does not have it at their store. But if it's matjes herring you're looking for, you can find it at Brandt ( they have stores in Burlington and Mississauga ) and also at Denninger's ( they are around the Hamilton area ). Yes we eat it with lots of raw onion!
