Smoked Salmon

I love smoked salmon. It then occurred to me how much better it must be when smoked in-house. So who in town has the best in-house smoked salmon?

RESTAURANT WEEK

I can't believe no one has brought this up yet. Just over a week away and still adding restaurants, this event is out of control. What looks good this year?

"I'll gladly pay you Tuesday for a hamburger today ": Best Hamburger in Austin

Jeffreys - I realize it is a pricey burger but I do believe at happy hour it goes for 10 dollars, and this thing is most definitely worth it. Its unbelievably rich and meaty and the condiments it comes with are fantastic. It tasted a little different like it wasn't all beef so I asked and they use lamb in the patty along with beef. The fries it comes with arent bad either.

Need input on La Sombra Bar and Grill

Went a couple of days ago for happy hour. They don't have that good of a deal for hh since it only applies to a couple of items but the food is very inventive, and very good. We had the desgustacion de cebiche (I guess the latin way to say it?), which was three of their cebiches which included a shrimp cebiche, a shellfish cebiche, and then the cebiche of the day which was sunfish. They were all very good, and i am usually not a fan of shrimp ceviche. We also got their vegetable cebiche, which was mushrooms, corn with a roasted tomatillo sauce on the side with shaved truffle. FANTASTIC. We got another raw tuna dish that was also very good and topped with habanero fish eggs or something of the sort. Other than the mass amounts of raw fish, we got quail skewers in an adobe sauce and their pork belly. I realize pork belly is just good, but this was awesome, topped with pickled red onions and peppers. Nice and crisp and juicy and unbelievable. The quail was also amazing, the sauce was rich and spicy with the most delectable green sauce for dipping that was super spicy.
Overall the experience was great and our waiter was very helpful in explaining the dishes.
I highly recommend this place.

Gazpacho!

I had one at Eastside Cafe that was a little different than I am used to, completely pureed with small diced pieces of celery and cucumber mixed in. Super refreshing (as one would hope w gazpacho). Though I am a sucker for anything Eastside Cafe serves.

Hard Hat Report Vol 5

I haven't been by in awhile so they might already be open, but a new restaurant venture by the guys who own 34th street cafe and etc is opening in the old Sampaio's. Anybody know anything more about it? There is no link on their website.

Austin Burger Smackdown!

I've never had their burger but their veggie burger is the best I've every had. And its massive. Its been awhile but I am pretty sure it is made out of grains, like brown rice, and it has a sort of asian style to it. Its unbelievably good, and yes its expensive but hey i can make it last for two meals because its that monsterish. Also a side note, Houston's has this appetizers with smoked salmon and capers and it is also absolutely delicious

best caldo tjalapeno in town?

I am not sure if it is caldo tjalapeno (on the menu it is called chicken soup ha) you'll have to tell me more about what is in the soup but Julio's on Duval has an amazing chicken soup. The broth has a rich chicken flavor and is full of zucchini, yellow squash, and chicken as well as about a quarter of an avocado. It is not very spicy, but I usually just add in some salsa to spice it up some. It is the perfect soup for a cold rainy day.
Oh and it also comes with two tortillas, and its all just 5.99 maybe 6.50 if you get a side of rice (which i recommend)

21st Birthday

My friends 21st birthday is coming up next tuesday and we wanted to go to a fun place for both good drinks and spectacular food. We were thinking something like tapas, maybe Malaga or a fun wine bar, perhaps Mulberry? Any suggestions would be great. Thanks!

I havent had these olives you speak of but Fino has the most delicious fried anchovy olives. I havent had them in a long time, but i know i could go to Fino just to order a few plates of them.

Fino opinions? (AUS)

I was really excited to try Fino because i think tapas are the best way eat (that way you can eat everything!). It wasnt exactly what i expected but their fried olives are a must. Just absolutely delicious

Boulevard Grill - 2-4-1 burgers...not so much

The burgers here are just ok, though i am not a huge burger fan. One thing i did find surprisingly delicious is there salsa. Its chunky with a good amount of cilantro. A strange place to find such good salsa, i didnt even finish my burger because i was so addicted to the salsa.

The stuffed avacado challenge

Avocado is my favorite food, could eat it for every meal every day, and i try. As for perhaps a lighter stuffed avocado, the one at Fonda San Miguel is delicious. With a citrus seafood filling over greens, it is one that doesnt require you to diet afterwards.

Austin Mexican Food - La Fonda bah! Curra's - YES!

I have only been once to Fonda and was blown away, and having been dying to go back for brunch. Yes its expensive but as said on this blog, it is not a taco stand. You can get a pasta dinner for 8 dollars or you can pay 25 and get homemade pasta at Vespaio. The same is true for Mexican food. The ceviche was unbelievable in my opinion and i wish the glasses were bottomless because i think i could of eaten that much of it. The mole was another fabulous dish. As for their dessert i thought the caramel crepes were unbelievably addicting. It is a place that i wish i could frequently visit but because of the prices, it will have to be a treat for me.
