Trip Report: McMinnville Oregon

Thanks! For what you had, I don't consider that unreasonable for 2. I can't wait to try. Do you think I should go ahead and make reservations 10 days out?

Trip Report: McMinnville Oregon

Hi, I know this is an old topic, but could you give me an idea of the prices at Thistle? Thanks.

Downtown Toronto for 2 Nights

Hey, everyone! I'll be visiting downtown Toronto for two nights from 12/19-12/21. I'm thinking hard about the Black Hoof and Enoteca Sociale, but would welcome any and all suggestions for regional favorites or Toronto fare I just shouldn't miss. I am not a picky eater at all, but my wife will require some regular meat and potatoes type dishes to be present at the restaurant.. =P Thanks in advance!

I guess I should add, I love a good beer or a glass of scotch to end the night. Local breweries or whiskey bars are an added bonus!

Lantern - Menu Prices

Thanks to you both. I suppose my post was a bit confusing. I meant $60 a plate. Just wasn't sure their pricepoint considering all the accolades they'd been getting lately. This fits right into my ballpark though. Should be a great time!

Lantern - Menu Prices

So, after hearing all the hoopla about Lantern Restaurant in Chapel Hill, I really want to go try it out. Unfortunately, they don't have any prices posted on their menu. Can anyone give me an idea of what range I'm looking at? I live in Raleigh and really don't want to show up over there and find out all their dinners are >$60. Thanks!

Where can I find raw brisket in Raleigh?

Anyone have any ideas? I can't find it at my local supermarkets and The Fresh Market also didn't have it. I would love to smoke a side of brisket, but can't seem to source any locally. Thanks in advance!

Great Pizza in North Raleigh

Any recommendations for Capital/Brentwood area? Lilly's won't deliver this far up. =)

Super Wok in Cary NC: How I love thee

Ahhh. Do you have to ask for it? I guess I've only ever ordered off their takeout menu at the front.

Fortune Palace on Capital and Brentwood? I've ordered multiple times here and find it to be pretty bland. What do you order there?

Fresh Market does indeed have them.

Best Sandwich in the Triangle?

Pretty much anything on the menu that I've had has been awesome. They offer a great variety of seafood dishes: ceviche, etc. They have one crazy dish that's like $80 and feeds 6 people that looks like some giant type of paella or something. Their chile rellenos are some of my favorites.

Best Sandwich in the Triangle?

Yeah, it's definitely an instant nap sandwich. It comes with fries, which I never touch. If you go, make sure you request the salsa verde. They won't bring it out unless you're spanish or request it. =)

Best Sandwich in the Triangle?

The best sandwich I've ever had in the triangle is the Torta Cubano at Tacos Y Mariscos Vallarta on Capital Boulevard. If you've never had a torta cubano, this one is forking awesome!! The torta is built on an 8" round, crusty white roll. There is a breaded, fried pork cutlet as the base. On top of this is a spicy ground beef mixture with mayo, avocado, lettuce, tomato, salsa, guacamole, two fried eggs and loads of white spanish cheese. The whole thing is then pressed on the grill making the cheese melt all over the place. I guarantee that nothing in the triangle compares to this gastronomic monstrosity!

drive to West Jefferson

You're right, West Jefferson is way off the grid. =) I know, because I grew up there. The guy below me mentions skipping a bbq place in town on your left. It's called "Smoky Mtn. Barbecue" and I actually worked there for a summer. It's not horrible, but definitely not outstanding. Their fried chicken is more worth the trip than their bbq. Their ribs are awesome, but they only serve 'em once a week.

Ashe County Cheese Plant will take you all of 20 minutes to visit. Go look in the window and see if anything is going on. When you visit the store, pick up some "squeaky cheese." It's a local favorite.

Definitely check out the Glendale Springs Inn - it's close to the churches of the frescoes, and has a great restaurant. Pres. Clinton stayed there while on his visit.

T. Gray's in downtown WJ is new, and I have yet to eat there.

Where exactly is your cabin located? I might be able to come up with some other stuff to do. You should definitely take a day to canoe the New. Hit up Zaloo's Canoes.

If you want an upscale meal in Ashe County, check out the River House: http://www.riverhousenc.com/cmt/20.html
It's between 20-40 dollars a plate, and is absolutely wonderful. The chef features upscale dishes of game found in the area. eg: plantain encrusted trout, venison, etc..

I will second the nod to Shatley Springs, but I would more recommend going there for breakfast. If you want a real Ashe Co. treat, ask for chocolate gravy. =) It sounds weird, but trust me, it's awesome.

I can't speak to Michael's as it's relatively new. However, Ashe Co. is no longer dry as of this spring, and I believe Michael's has a good bar. Or, it's one of the few places in town with a bar, rather.

The WJ Coffee House is not on the back street, but just outside of town. Similar to Waffle House, they have awesome omelettes.

Anyone have any info on the donut shop at Brier Creek (raleigh, nc)...its called something Fig.

I have to say that Fractured Prune was horrible - at Brier Creek, at least. The doughnuts were nuked in the microwave, and were waaaaaay too sweet for me. I don't know how that's possible considering I love Krispy Kreme, but they were. I'd pass on FP doughnuts.
