Favorite Paper Towel?
Not brand loyal. Cheapest is my goal and unit pricing doesn't work for paper towels. If unit priced on the shelf by the foot, then there are single ply, double ply, etc. so it's difficult to be price compare. If by the sheet, there are different size sheets,so again ,a pain to price shop. I get so anxious I just grab a multi-pack that is on sale or else the store's brand.
Your recommendation for a nice dinner in New Paltz?
Uh, I've been there and there are "like clueless college boys", too.
I think I give up on Pizza in Westchester
One question- Did the great pizza from your youth in Brooklyn have caramelized onions and gorgonzola toppings? You're comparing different pizzas, I'm sure.
Woodbury Commons Breakfast?
Do you mean in the Woodbury Commons, or in the area? There is nothing in the Commons besides chains. Nearby, on Rte. 17M in Harriman, there is the Crossroads Cafe for a very good breakfast. Just north of Woodbury Commons, on Rte. 32 is the Brightstar Diner, which is just OK.
pork tenderloin quesitons
Did you buy the prepackaged pork tenderloin? Usually the tenderloins are only about 1 to 1 1/2 pounds. There are probably two packaged together. Open the package and take a look. Not an expert on freezing, though.
Wedding venue ideas
I recently went to a wedding at Rolling Greens at Dutchess Golf and Country Club in Poughkeepsie which I know (good friend's daughters wedding) was within your price range. The owners of this place also own the Poughkeepsie Grand, Shadows and Pier 9. This place is beautiful, the food was very good and my friend said they were very easy to work with.
Best Burgers in Orange or Ulster County
My new favorite is at the Gunk Haus in Clintondale, which is in Ulster County. It comes with a good slaw and I love the pretzel bun. Excellent french fries, too.
Dining at Cathryn's Tuscan Grille Cold Spring NY
Uh, you said they drive to NYC "weekly", which means one a week.
Help me use my frozen green beans (blech!)
Yes, this looks very close. I think this is the healthy version- onions "sauteed" in broth and egg whites only. Either way, this is actually quite good.
Help me use my frozen green beans (blech!)
I don't have a recipe for it, but my mom makes a mock chopped liver with green beans. The flavor is in the caramelized onions and eggs and it is really delicious. Does anyone have a recipe for this?
open on christmas day
Gerchak was responding to OP. Where in NYS? This board covers a large arrea. Although it doesn't matter now.
Grocery store pet peeve. Is it just me?
People do ask, or else stand there with their arms full and give me the look. I will occasionally offer for someone to go ahead, but more often I will inform them that the store has an express lane.
Grocery store pet peeve. Is it just me?
How about when you're checking out a large order at a regular line and someone comes up with a few items and asks to cut ahead because they only have a few things and express line is long. I often decline and say to use express line because technically they're cutting ahead of everyone else waiting there. The express line may be long, but the wait is short.
New Paltz - Gomen Kudasai has closed
I just noticed that they reopened in the RIte Aid Plaza, up the road, in the western corner of the Plaza.
Mexican chorizo in MHV
Did you try the Associated Supermarket in Newburgh, over by Target?
saturday night in poughkeepsie?
Have you been to the Gunk Haus in Clintondale, between Poughkeepsie and New Paltz? It's definitely off the beaten path and has good bar food and a great selection of beer.

Ugh, why did I order that? Do you ever know better but do it anyway?
In my family, there is one member always regrets what he ordered with "I should have ordered..." Now we (jokingly) tell him when we are ordering, "why don't you order what you should have ordered?"
Anyone eaten at a Tavola in New Paltz?
We went this past weekend. I was very impressed and will definitely return. The owners have changed the interior from Beso, creating a comfortable country Italian atmosphere. The octopus appetizer was wonderful. I ran into a friend eating there at the same time as we were there and she later reported that that was her favorite, too. They have a nice selection of pastas. We shared the special as an appetizer. Not sure what was in it, but it was very good. The entrees were excellent, too. The word is that the chicken under a brick is fabulous, but I almost never order chicken out and went with the short ribs. They were very good-maybe the chicken next time. Wonderful desserts- a plum crisp and a light chocolate dessert called a tortino. We had excellent, well informed and well trained service.
Spinach - bad mouth feel?
I know exactly what you are talking about. It is caused by the oxalic acid in spinach. I also used to experience the same dry mouth from a few Entenmann's' baked products, but I haven't had any in quite a while.
Where to buy chocolate cookies for crust
You can also use Nabisco Chocolate Grahams or Teddy Grahams for a cookie crust.
Great lunch/brunch near Woodbury Commons?
That would be Cosimo's, which is about a quarter of a mile north of the Commons. Cosimo's is a local chain of, I think, 4 restaurants in the mid-hudson valley. Very good, not quite upscale, but much more than a just a pizza place.
Great cheap food near Johns Hopkins' main campus?
My daughter graduated from Hopkins a few years ago. She took us to Carma's Cafe, a teeny cafe on the corner of St. Paul and 32nd Street for a lunch. There's also Donna's, also on St. Paul.
Outer Cape questions
Mac's Shack is great, but they don't take reservations and we've waited more than an hour for a table on numerous occasions. Not sure if that would work with kids.
Memories of Howard Johnson's soda in cans
I worked at HoJo's during the early 70's. I don't remember canned HoJo soda, but I do recall that when customers ordered a Coke, we had to tell them that we served HoJo Cola. Many times, the customer would order something else in instead, such as a root beer or an orange drink which I don't think was carbonated.
New Paltz Restaurants
There is a new restaurant, Rock and Rye Tavern, in the former Locust Tree, at the golf course on Huguenot St. We had a very nice dinner there last week with lovely outdoor seating. They have a talented bar -tender/mixologist who made me a very refreshing Pimm's cup. Our appetizers, entrees and dessert were very good as was the service. We has a duck, and hangar steak that were nicely prepared, as well as a wonderful halibut with a corn and white bean succotash. The only issue I had was with the Sirrus classic rock sound track that was playing in general as well as playing too loudly. They did turn it down upon request and I could swear that they did eventually switch the station. It's not that I don't like classic rock, but it did not fit with the setting. The server said that music was appropriate for the "vibe" that the owners were trying to set, but they might want to rethink that.
There is a new Italian restaurant called A Tavola, where Beso used to be. I haven't tried it yet, but their menu on-line looked promising.
In search of Hudson Valley-area vineyards for rainy Memorial weekend
FYI, Rivendell did not close their doors due to lawsuits. Bob Ransom and Susan Wine had leased the Rivendell land. They gave up the lease when they bought a house on Rte.299, just outside of New Paltz and supposedly assumed that they would be able to operate a wine shop there, under the guise of planting a few grapes and calling it a winery. The town government, representing most of the community, thought otherwise and had to defend themselves from several costly lawsuits by Ransom/Wine, who were repeatedly told it was not an allowed use for their land. The Robibero family operates at their former site. I visited there last fall. I enjoyed the visit and some of their wines, but they, like Ransom/Wine also do not many of the wines that they serve and sell there.
going 2 b in port jervis/poughkipsee area on a fri nite. Anything?
Port Jervis is about 50 miles from Poughkeepsie. Where do you plan to be near when you're ready for a bite? I'm not familiar with places to eat in the Port Jervis area- I think there isn't much, but there are many options in and near Poughkeepsie. In Poughkeepsie, for example, there are Crave fort dinner and the Artist's Palate, serving lunch and dinner. Over in Arlington, just east of Poughkeepsie there is Twisted Soul a casual Argentine/Asian cafe, serving an unusual combination of treats, including empanadas, dumplings, noodle dishes and bubble tea.. A newer place in Poughkeepsie is Karma lounge, a wine bar serving Tapas, that I haven't tried yet, but look forward to. For casual, I love Los Hornitos, a Chilean bakery/cafe south of Poughkeepsie on Rte.9 in Wappingers Falls. Great sandwiches and tres leches cake. I have had a wonderful slice of lucuma cake there, made with the lucuma berry, native to Peru and small corner of Chile, worth trying.

Rochester rehearsal dinner
We will be going to North Shore Grill. It was recommended by several people we know in the area, and the catering menu looks like what we had in mind for our very mixed group. In addition, the woman I've been speaking with at the North Shore Grill, has been very nice to deal with. I'm planning this from out of the area, so I want to keep the dinner simple. Ember Woodfire Grill was first choice, but they were unable to handle a large party on a Friday night. We might try Good luck on Thurs. night with a smaller since we will be in the area a few days before the big event. I'll let everyone know how it is, in addition to the wedding at The Rabbit Room.

Tuthill House in Gardner
Gardiner- just south of New Paltz in the mid-Hudson Valley. I've heard good things about the Tuthill House, but haven't gone because the menu didn't look very interesting.
