Shanghai dining tips
tried franck bistro the other night, it was indeed very good. thanks for the recommendation. mr. and mrs. bund is also very impressive. i had the perfect duck confit there. a tapas restaurant called el willy is also highly recommended. better than any spanish tapas restaurant in hk.
Needs recs for HK please! Leaving on Thursday!
i think you should skip bo innovation though. fusion and inventive cuisine at its worst!!!
My Rest. Choices for Shanghai + Beijing
i'm going to jesse tmr. you didn't have the hairy crabs? anyway, seems like what you ordered at jesse are not their 'signature dishes' which are the drunken shrimps and crabs; fish head in green scallions (needs to order in advance and it seems every table orders it and heard so many compliments about it), salted chicken, stinky tofu, fried river shrimps (a shanghainese specialty), and 'si yu' (don't know the english name and don't know how to type in chinese) but definitely the the best.
Restaurants in Hong Kong that you MUST eat at?
at reputable shanghainese restaurants such as liu yuen on lockhart road (not sure of the english names)....non shanghainese restaurants don't really know hairy crabs and they are just selling them because they are 'in season' and everbody wants them. ask for the male ones and specifically ask them to choose the ones with a lot of 'white' roes. must have them steamed whole and eat plain.
Restaurants in Hong Kong that you MUST eat at?
bo innovation is HORRIBLE! i'm having my doubts on anthony bourdain for even endorsing it kind of. the michelin guide knows nothing about asian food. innovation maybe but of a bad kind. something is simply not meant to be!
My Rest. Choices for Shanghai + Beijing
one can't even compare ye shanghai with jessie, the former is a tourist trap and the latter a real foodie's heaven!
Less than impressed - Chote Chitr in Bangkok
i was there two years ago because of all the recommendations found here and i was also very disappointed.
Shanghai dining tips
traditional shangainese breakfast are fried dough wrapped with sticky rice (sorry don't know the english name) and soy milk
2 nights only in Bangkok
for great seafood go to savoey seafood at the suan lum night bazaar, must order the chili crab! i really don't care much for th sky bar in lebua but a lot of people seem to like it. where you;re staying the centara grand has quite a nice roof top bar.
there's a great great great coffee place with the best cookies in the world on the little street outside the shangri la hotel. there's also a noodle place right around the corner.
Paris lunch & dinner in mid-Oct...feeling overwhelmed!
i'm staying at the four seasons george v so am definitely going to le cinq for lunch. it's just that i'm a bit sceptical of hotel dining.
Four days in Paris - haven't been for several years
i second l'ambroisie, it is by far the most romantic restaurant i've been
Paris lunch & dinner in mid-Oct...feeling overwhelmed!
true, will do that instead. many thanks :)
Paris lunch & dinner in mid-Oct...feeling overwhelmed!
i chose le grand vefour just because it's supposedly one of the most beautiful restaurants in paris, not exactly a foodie's choice i know. for me the l'ambroisie is the most romantic and gorgeous restaurants in paris but i've been there a few times but never been to le grand vefour hence the choice. any other suggestions?
Paris lunch & dinner in mid-Oct...feeling overwhelmed!
i'm actually in a similar situation, i've been in paris many times but am taking my mother there for the first time (it's her first) so am eager to show her around. i'm also there oct 11 to 16. i've booked l'astrance and le grand vefour for dinner and am deciding between l'ami jean, le pamphlet, le comptoir. i've had the tasting menu at hiramatsu before and it's great!!! you should try it. about vietnamese food, i actually know of a great place for pho in china town, i don't know the exact name but if you hop on the taxi and ask to go to the main street in china town you will see a vietnamese place with lots of people, you won't miss it. that place is seriously good. in fact, having french meal all planned out will start to really weigh on the stomach after just two days so i go to the vietnamese place whenever i'm in paris. btw, you should try l'avant gout for lunch. it's really good!
first time in portugal
hi everyone, i'll be in portugal for the first time in oct and would love to get any recommendations. i'll be in porto, the douro and lisbon. many thanks in advance :)
three days in london
hi everyone, i haven't been to london for a few years now and am going to be there for three days next week. would love to hear restaurant recommendations. i'm thinking of sketch, cipriani (i know it's pobably not worth it but would like to know which is the best italian restaurant in london). any great places for lunch as well? many thanks in advance.
Thailand Food Reccomendations - From Street Food to Resorts?
oh, and there's a true gem of a place called koffee link (at the end of the street outside the shangri-la hotel) i usually stay at the peninsula so it's the end of the street from the peninsula pier), it has the best coffee, best chocolate trip cookies and croissant with ham and cheese! it's not thai food i know but it's a great place!
Thailand Food Reccomendations - From Street Food to Resorts?
resorts with great food do exist! i have two choices in phuket, for ultimate luxury go to trisara, for a more down to earth version, go to sala phuket. both are great romantic resorts with great food.
in bangkok i recommend trying le lys, savoey seafood (and do order the crab with curry powder), there's also a great italian restaurant called enoteca in the sukhumvit area. a new restaurant with a great ambience is bo lan. they have a tasting menu that's worth sampling.
Trip Report - China
for really authentic shanghainese, don't miss jesse (the original one and NOT the one in xin tian di)
Best Italian restaurant in Hong Kong: Da Domenico?
you mean the burrata? yes classified in wanchai has it too for over 300hkd but the quality is nowhere near da domenico's. the great thing about da domenico is that you can order half portions too.
Best Italian restaurant in Hong Kong: Da Domenico?
i absolutely agree, the best italian food i've had outside italy and the best in asia, that's why we tolerate the bad service ;)
Best meal of your life (in Florence) recommendations
i agree but definitely add the artichoke torte as a starter!
Chow meet in HK anyone? Looking for HK food fun!
please forget about Bo Innovation!!! otherwise your list sounds quite good. west villa for dim sum.
haven't been to paris for three years, recommendations please
hi, haven't been to paris for three years now and would love some recommendations. am ver tempted to go back to hiramatsu, any thoughts? have been searching through the board and new favorites seem to be l'astrance and l'ami jean. l'astrance seems too good to miss but the latter is kind of mixed. any other recommendations. thanks in advance :)
