There HAS to be a good Thai restaurant here...

Good to know, thanks! I will try it when I am over that way. I also love my Pad Se Ew with a really wide noodle but have yet to find that here.

There HAS to be a good Thai restaurant here...

Pad Se Ew is my favorite Thai noodle dish. Where Madam Mam's wins over every other Thai place that I have tried in town is the fact that they use Chinese broccoli. Every other place that I have tried uses regular broccoli and that's where they all fall short. JMO.

Hard Hat Report Vol 8

My spies tell me that Hat Creek Burger Co. is going up at the intersection of 360 and Bee Caves (in the former Pots & Plants nursery location) and a P Terry's is opening in the HEB plaza across the street. No ETA.

RIP part 4

On the way back from lunch today (Spicy Pickle) I noticed that Hot Slices (aka Slices and Ices) is closed and has been gutted.

Too bad, I enjoyed their pies. R.I.P.

Little City, you will be missed!

I still miss their Guadalupe location. R.I.P.

Paczki Day

They're not necessarily the best, but I have seen (and bought) Paczki at my local HEB last year.

Backstage

That would be good news, love Backstage (sorry I don't have any info).

I NEED a french dip sandwich in austin

We went to lunch at the Roaring Fork over the holiday break and I had the Prime Rib Sliders. They consisted of tender, thinly sliced prime rib on super pillowy-soft buns with horseradish and au jus on the side. Served with a side of crispy, salty, shoestring fries. My mouth is watering thinking about it now.

Man, that almost sounded like a shill post but I can assure you I am not affiliated with the restaurant in any way.

Black and White cookies?

Bountiful Bakery (Westlake and Galleria) has them but they are mini B/Ws. They are made with real chocolate too so they are richer than the ones I remember. Not the way I prefer them, but they are tasty. Expensive, though.

Best Chicken Fried Steak in Austin and the Hinterlands

I haven't tried them all obviously but Hoover's is my favorite out of the places that I've sampled CFS (Threagills, Hyde Park Bar).

Ultimate BLT

It's a chain but I enjoy the BLT at the Mellow Mushroom. It's crispy bacon on a toasted hoagie with L, T, onions, provolone and sprouts. It hasn't disappointed me yet. Their service on the other hand...

Buster's Bee Cave BBQ?

Sadly, Buster's closed a few months ago. Last I heard, they were seeking a new location. If anyone has any info, feel free to post it.

The Garlic Bomb was good, I liked their pulled pork better.

Tony C's Coal Fired Pizza

I was very excited to see that we were getting a coal oven pizzeria close to the house. I've been looking forward to Tony C's opening for months. Back home I lived within walking distance to Lombardi's, John's and Arturo's pizzerias so I think I'm qualified to judge the quality of a good coal oven pizza. Well, I finally made my way over there last week and was very impressed. As soon as my wife brought the pie into the car I could smell the parmesan cheese on our Marinara pie (standard pie, sauce and cheese). It smelled just like a pie from Lombardi's (minus the fresh basil).

When I got home I tore the box open and started eating the slice on my way to the cabinet to grab myself a plate. I was in a pizza trance and my wife was mad because I didn’t get her a plate too. The crust had that perfect crunch that only a coal oven can deliver. The sauce was not too sweet and nice and chunky. A good pie overall and I would recommend this place to anyone that loves thin crust pizza (and especially anyone that loves coal oven pizza).

The hallmark of any good pizzeria in my opinion is consistency. I delayed this post until I tried Tony C’s a second time. Ordered another Marinara and an order of garlic knots (yay, garlic knots!). The garlic knots were a little pricey @ $5 for a ½ dozen, but they were pretty good (nice crunch again and doughy within) and served with a side of marinara sauce. The pie was really good again but there was a little less sauce on it this time which detracted from the quality slightly. When I order a pizza I don’t like to make special requests (extra sauce, well done, etc.). I like to think the pizza maker has all of this down.

Next time we will try the Margarita and one of the heroes.

Spiraling Toward Valentines Night

Like my parents, we got married on Valentines Day. About 7 years ago while we were still living in NY we had a dinner at Marcus Samuelsson's Aquavit that ran about $350 if I recall. Since then, we decided to never go out again on our anniversary as the meal did not live up to expectations (not even close).

So, to celebrate 14 years of wedded bliss we headed to Ciola's in Lakeway last night. The room was pretty full for a Thursday, I think others had the same idea as we did. Ciola's isn't by any stretch the best Italian in Austin but I always have a solid meal there and the service is professional and gracious as always.

Onto the meal; we had an app of clams oreganata which were good. For dinner, I had pasta della dario, penne in a cream/gorgonzola sauce with grilled chicken, portobellos, cherry tomatoes and asparagus. Usually I can't finish a heavy dish like this but I was hungry. Wife had seafood garibaldi, lingiuni with assorted shellfish. She had been craving this for a while so she was happy. For dessert we had spumoni; the spumoni here is a specialty. While not as good as the spumoni at L&B Spumoni Gardens in Brooklyn, it was good enough, albeit a little too frozen.

Happy Valentines Day all. Welcome Basilette!

Hard Hat Report

I haven't tried Tony C's yet but I didn't know it was open yet, thanks! If it's open I will try it this week and report back.

This news doesn't come a moment too soon as I got a pie from Yaghi's last week and it was inedible (burnt).

Pet Friendly Restaurants

Cuatro's on W24th st. has a dog-friendly patio as well.

Castle Hill replacement

Me and the wife had our annual MLK day lunch at Mirabelle this year. It was delicious; I started with a cup of gumbo and a small southwestern caesar salad. For lunch I had the enchiladas suizas which never disappoint. A hibiscus iced tea. Mrs. B had one of their salads and loved it. No room for dessert!

Heading to Barton Creek Resort in February and Looking for Local Favorites...

I don't think they have entertainment but I will second Backstage. Great, great steaks everytime. The past few times we've gone I've gotten almost the same thing; 6 or 10oz filet, medium, fried onions and whatever mashed potatoes they're serving that day. Chocolate malt cake for dessert. I also enjoy the cornmeal and green chile crusted tenderloin. My wife doesn't eat red meat and always enjoys the seafood dishes as well.

If you want to see some music or have a beer after dinner you can go to Poodie's Hilltop, a great bar/honky tonk that I think Willie owns a stake in? It's a mile or 2 past Backstage. Someone say steak?

Zoot moving to Bee Cave Bistro space

Yeah, it's closed but they are seeking a new location last I heard.

Zoot moving to Bee Cave Bistro space

Awesome. Hopefully this will make up for the recent losses of Buster's and Kahuna's Icehouse. Bee Cave Bistro was ok; I heard that they closed due to a rent increase. It's a nice space, though.

Hard Hat Report

It looks like there's a Kaplan testing center going in the former Moe's location on the drag :( In other drag news, it looks like there are signs up at Terra burger.

Restaurants open Jan 1 Evening

I took some visiting friends to Z Tejas on new years day 2 years ago. The service was so bad that I haven't been back since.

It's probably not the best day to go out; good luck, though. Wish I could help.

Tams' Deli

I was over that way today and stopped in for a #14 to go...in case you don't know what that is, it's the chargrilled pork bahn mi. It was great and I was happy as the last time I got one it wasn't as good as I remembered it. Today it was delicious, however.

Kahuna's Tiki Bar & Grill - January 2009

Kahuna's in Lakeway will be closing if it hasn't already. It's unfortunate as I thought it was ok for midweek takeout, though it went a bit downhill a few months after they opened. I liked the buffalo chicken and pulled pork sandwiches; not enough to go way up north for them though! I would order a pulled pork sandwich and put some Jim's BBQ sauce on it that I ordered from NC.

Thankfully, we have some decent takeout options with more and more restaurants opening in the Galleria.

Hard Hat Report

Walked by the former Moe's location on the drag today and there were construction workers in there...constructing. No word what's going in there yet. I bet it's a chain, though. Will report again as info develops.

Hard Hat Report

On the drag next to Potbelly there are signs for a new shop called Swirll. It looks like a low fat frozen yogurt place.

Wendy's Double Stack 99 cents..Terrific !

HA, so true about the napkins! Not a big fan of the double stack, it always seems dry...maybe loaded is the way to go.

I'm a big fan of the Spicy Chicken Go Wrap, though...

Beard Papa's?

I loved going to Beard Papa when I lived in Manhattan. It was close to my apartment but I wouldn't go out of my way for a cream puff if they opened here in Austin...

Hard Hat Report

Tony C's Coal Fired Pizza is slated to open in the Hill Country Galleria soon. Of all the new restaurants out this way this is the one I'm most looking forward to. Coal oven pizza in Austin, yipee. I hope it's good though I do like Yaghi's.

Soft opening question [Moved from Austin board]

Thanks for the heads-up. I think I'll wait till they work the kinks out anyway...
