[AUS] Good DimSum in Austin Area.

my guess would be chinatown in far west, but shanghai is definitely a possibility.

NYC Hounds Heading Your Way. Help?

nothing against tamale house and it definitely has it's fans, but i'm sure with the added ingredients (jacy mentioned 4), the tacos would come closer to $3.50 for two. i just wish they used strips of bacon there instead of pieces that look like bacon bits.

Best food markets in the world? The kinds with multiple vendors?

Sriracha Chili Sauce Condiment or Crack?!

i think that's what that spicy mayo sauce that most sushi places put on rolls is. except when i make it at home, i use kewpie mayo :)

Best French Fries in Austin

if i recall correctly, the happy hour has actually a few dishes for $5 including the burger. i wish they wouldn't upcharge for substituting the chips for their shoestring fries. Tues-Fri 430-630 and Sun-Mon all night. They might have changed though.

Apple Cider Doughnuts?

the closest and only option i can think of are the apple sauce cake donuts at round rock donuts. i've had them before but not in a long while, and with nothing to compare to i can only tell you that they were fairly moist but didn't have a lot of apple sauce flavor. good luck!

ISO Asian Sesame Balls filled with sweet red bean paste

Asia Market, home of the beloved Asia Cafe has them near the cash register in the front. I believe they're 75 cents a pop. Could be wrong though

Hainanese Chicken Rice?

the only place i've actually seen this on the menu is at baguette house in the chinatown center on n. lamar. had it once and wasn't impressed, but i don't know what good hainanese chicken rice is supposed to taste like. good luck!

Austin Cabrito

the mutton (sheep) at sam's is tasty, but it isn't the same as cabrito (goat). can't say that i've had much cabrito in austin. once at the texican many many moons ago. don't remember it being offensive, yet not memorable either. hopefully someone will chime in with a great suggestion!

i'm taking a wild stab at it, but i'm guessing tom was poking fun with tyler florence in mind. i could be completely wrong though!

Late night dining in North Austin & Round Rock?

bahn mi

Baguette House in the chinatown center on north lamar opened not too long ago. if you're looking at MT supermarket from the front it's the very last shop on the right. I've been twice and both times service has been friendly and efficient. The bread is baked in house and while not as crusty on the outside and tender on the inside as i would like, still passable. They also have croissants and a few other sweet as well as savory pastries, along with some rice and vermicelli dishes. i'm no bahn mi expert for sure, but between lily's and bag. house i would probably go for the latter.

That Popcorn Place

it's pretty hard to see from guadalupe. it's recessed in the mini strip with veggie heaven between 21st and mlk, right across the street from the schlotsky's (sp?). if you turn into the parking lot with veggie heaven you should see it. hope this helps, good luck!

Favorite stainless steel no handle travel mug?

i went and read that review of the 18oz nissan tumbler and from what i can gather, it wasn't a gel substance originally in the thermos...but rather a "pinhole leak" on the bottom where the liquid that the purchaser had placed in the product leaked into the space between the walls. and after quite a bit of time, i guess those liquids stored in there became a "gel". needless to say, that's disgusting. i have 2 nissan thermos' and yes, the cover on the one you have linked to isn't leak proof. the other one i use is a bit larger, but works like a charm and doesn't have a handle. here is the link:

Recommend best Alfredo/Parmesan cream/Garlic cream/White cream-based sauce dishes in Austin

i believe stephanieh stated above that Gino's was in Round Rock and on Mays st. not stassney.

http://austin.citysearch.com/profile/...

i'm pretty sure that's the Gino's she was referring to...but it might be the same owners, i have not been to either so i can't say. good luck!

Tortas in Austin

i actually had one the other day. not bad and cheap for a filling meal. they toast the bread on the outside and they are 2.89 + tax if i recall correctly. the options were: milanesa, beef fajita, al pastor, pierna, avocado and a few more i can't remember at the time. they also had one called a cubano torta (almost $4 + tax) which was their spin on a cuban sandwich. having never tried it i can't recommend. good luck!

la traviata on congress if you're up for italian. seems to be one of the more popular and positively reviewed trattorias on the austin boards.

Salt and Pepper Squid

i'm glad to hear that you've had only good experiences with the squid at sunflower. i was referring to the squid itself, not the sauce. maybe i'll order it again next time i go and it will be as good as it has been in past visits.

Salt and Pepper Squid

i think just about all of the more authentic chinese and vietnamese restaurants will have this dish. i've had it at sunflower (inconsistent, sometimes chewy and dry sometimes moist and flavorful), din ho (sorry, i can't remember), kim son (inconsistent as well). i've seen it at sea dragon on the menu. i'm sure many others will be able to chime in with better descriptions and recommendations.

they're open 7 days a week 10am-9pm i believe. usually if vietnamese places are closed, it's on a tuesday. hope you enjoy your meal and report back!

i believe moonshine has a bottomless mimosa option during their sunday brunch. i could be wrong though. they would definitely fit into your not wanting to spend a fortune requirement. good luck!
