Recs for a nice lunch spot - Near Downtown/Common
Hi I'll be in town next week for a conference and I am meeting with a client for lunch. I'd like to take them to a nicer, more formal spot. Can anyone recommend some good places downtown or by the common? That's about the mid-point from our hotels. Italian's about as "ethnic" as I'd like to go since the client's not a particularly adventurous diner.
Thanks,
Oz
Guavate (Puerto Rico)-Best Lechoneras?
How's the drive from San Juan? I'm thinking of doing this in the next few weeks.
thanks!
Peruvian Food: Los Balcones del Peru, Mamita's and Mario's
Spotted Lau's the other day as I was eating at the burger stand across the street. Haven't tried it myself, but would be curious to see what others thought of it. It did seem to be vacant during lunch on a weekday, so I'm not sure about their hours

Favorite Panaderia (Mexican Bakery) in LA?
It was at one time French and I believe they are using the original recipes. The bollilos are more like French rolls, but they are the best bread for tortas ever.
Catering Truck Needed - Burbank
So our company is hosting an employee lunch in the near future and it turns out the In-n-Out catering trucks are all booked on that date. (We also contacted the Fatburger Fatmobile, but sheesh, talk about an arm and a leg.)
Can anyone recommend any other truck caterers? Doesn't have to be burgers, but it should be something appropriate for a corporate event, so I'm thinking most taco trucks are out.
Thanks in advance!
EARTHQUAKE -- THE BIG ONE, What to Eat?
I'm not trying to be morbid or anything, but heavy plastic bags are also an important thing to stock if you're going to stay put. The theoretical big one is supposed to have an epicenter east of LA in the IE, but it will be large enough to cause much carnage in the greater LA area.
Taco Trucks
With the coast to coast coverage this issue is getting, I think they'll be rethinking this law pretty soon:

Taco Trucks
"So does it mean they can park for more than 1 hour in incorporated parts of the city?"
No, it means that taco trucks in incorporated areas are subject to the laws enacted by the city councils of their respective incorporated cities. The LA County Board is the "city council" to those communities that fall outside such cities.
Here's the County's website with info on unincorporated LA:

Canter's or Langer's For Pastrami
I've been to Langer's with a vegetarian before. They split a white fish, lox & cream cheese platter with another person that looked pretty good. Did it tempt me away from my #19? No. But it looked good nonetheless.

Or one can look on their website:

to the OP, get the pastrami, but be warned, you may have to become a pastramitarian.
Valencia, Santa Clarita, Burbank: Chain Restaurant Wasteland?
Valencia is quite a ways removed from Burbank, will you be traveling back and forth?
If so, here are some Burbank threads to guide you:

Does the loco moco at Shakas count? That probably takes the crown.
Steak 'n Shake equivalent in SoCal?
This place is kind of in the same predicament as Rick's. See this article from the Pasadena Weekly from a couple of months ago:

Tommy's Breakfast Burrito
“NO. Mayo does not belong in a burrito.”
Really, Tommy's? THATS where you draw the line on what to put in burritos?
You should have stuck to your guns and made her glop some mayo on that unholy thing.
Cheap eats for a group? ("eastside")
Soot Bull Jeep is fun for groups, especially noisy, drunk ones.
Ambiance: smoky.

Donut Man, at last!
FYI, the special donuts are huge, so you could definitely get 2-4 servings from each one. (Or sugar coma if you decide to get one for each person).
Gus's BBQ, South Pasadena
Ah, I see. So it's corporate style. All things to everyone.
Chicago Style Pizza in LA?

Dear Lord - why did I go to Pink's today instead of Carney's?
There oughta be a law!
Dear Lord - why did I go to Pink's today instead of Carney's?
I think your judgment was impaired by NOT being drunk.
Is there such a thing as an "LA-style Bagel"?
If there is a predominant style out here (although I hate to claim it as an LA thing since it's a more widespread phenomenon) it's probably a style of bagel that is geared exclusively to making bagel sandwiches. So the bagels are 'cakey' or 'doughy' rather than properly chewy. Sure we have our bakeries that try to emulate a NY bagel, but for the most part where ignorance is bliss, 'tis folly to be wise.
The Perfect Bacon-Egg-and-Cheese...Almost
We have kaiser rolls available, in the supermarkets. The corner diner equivalents in LA (the so-called ghetto burger joints) don't use these rolls because the cheap, white bread of choice is Mexican bread. Soft, fresh telera is about as close to a kaiser roll as you're going to get at these burger joints. Count your blessings. This is one food item that is reasonably easy to recreate here.

knife sharpeners in LA
Don't the butchers at How's offer free sharpening? I've never been, but I'm curious to know if anyone else has and can report.
At what LA restaurant do you overlook horrible Food/Decor/Service for something great of theirs that you have to have?
You mean Honey's Kettle. I think the problem with the wait here is the combination of their business model (small batch cooking) and their bad decisions (or maybe it's just bad luck?) in the hiring dept. But the chicken, oh, the chicken...
At what LA restaurant do you overlook horrible Food/Decor/Service for something great of theirs that you have to have?
I was referring to their decor, but I have had surly to indifferent service at every branch I have visited except the Burbank one, where I feel they are extra nice and friendly.

Any Zankou except the Burbank location.
