Phyllo milk pie!
Sesame Seeds - Hulled or Unhulled for making tahini
I tried with regular (i.e., unhulled) and it was a total flop. So, I would stick with what's working!
Tehina--Other uses besides making Hummus?

This was a good discussion concerning the same question. As I posted, using it in place of peanut butter for traditional peanut butter squares is a fun change (almost halvah like).
calling all bakers - phyllo milk pie?!
I think galaktoborueko has a thick custard layer and it doesn't look like this pie has the same. I found a similar version from Martha Stewart (but have never used a MS recipe so don't know how well they work)

Guess I'll just have to give it a go and see what happens (and have a back up plan in mind!)
A main course using fresh dill--other than salmon.
My favorite thing to do when I get my hands on a bunch of great dill is to make a creamy dill dip/sauce to use for anything.
I use low fat silken tofu as a base and add some yogurt with olive oil OR low fat mayo, lots of lemon juice and some zest, lots of garlic, salt to taste (and/or a few anchovies), and whatever else (sometimes other herbs, sometimes scallions, sometimes capers). Whir that up with a huge bunch of dill and you've got a great healthful sauce. We do use it with salmon but also cold chicken, turkey burger sliders, and about everything else (as a dressing for cucumber salad etc.)
Chocolate Truffles or other gluten free chocolate dessert
http://www.epicurious.com/recipes/food/views/Flourless-Chocolate-Cake-14478
4 ounces fine-quality bittersweet chocolate (not unsweetened)
1 stick (1/2 cup) unsalted butter
3/4 cup sugar
3 large eggs
1/2 cup unsweetened cocoa powder plus additional for sprinkling
Preheat oven to 375°F and butter an 8-inch round baking pan. Line bottom with a round of wax paper and butter paper.
Chop chocolate into small pieces. In a double boiler or metal bowl set over a saucepan of barely simmering water melt chocolate with butter, stirring, until smooth. Remove top of double boiler or bowl from heat and whisk sugar into chocolate mixture. Add eggs and whisk well. Sift 1/2 cup cocoa powder over chocolate mixture and whisk until just combined. Pour batter into pan and bake in middle of oven 25 minutes, or until top has formed a thin crust. Cool cake in pan on a rack 5 minutes and invert onto a serving plate.
Dust cake with additional cocoa powder and serve with sorbet if desired. (Cake keeps, after being cooled completely, in an airtight container, 1 week.)
calling all bakers - phyllo milk pie?!

I really want to give this a try but have never heard of such a thing. Anyone made a phyllo custard tart or pie? How'd it go?
What are the best cooking tips or recipes you learned from your mom?
Color! Every meal had to have at least three distinct colors and I almost always go for the same now.
She has tried to teach me her eggplant caponata but I can't come close to replicating her dish.

Want to create a non - chocolate molten lava cake, ideas and advice please
I am not a chemist but feel as if something peanut butter themed ought to work. Melty PB is the best.
Dupont circle with 8 y.o.
My first rec. was going to be the Farmer's Market Sunday morning. We had a good meal at Casa Nonna recently and there are plenty of non-pizza options.
DC is small...are you tied to Dupont? Dinner on U street might be nice for a non-weekend night.
Oasis CSA
We are considering signing up for a CSA (pick-up at the new Smucker Farms store) and wonder if anyone has been part of the CSA (which has been around a few years I think) in the past.
The Farmer's cooperative is called Oasis at Bird-in-Hand.
Would love reviews if you have them.
Anyone cook daikon?

Very similar to what JungMann suggests, I followed the recipe above a couple weeks ago and it was delicious.
What can I do with my zaatar?
My SO made a salad with shredded cucumber, red onion, and whole olives with a zaatar viniagrette last night (from The Spice Bible ... a cookbook we've been loving recently). I think my own zaatar might have lots its pep but the shredded cucumber and onion salad is a keeper.
meringue technique
So it sounds as if the Italian method isn't worth trying? In the past, I think that I've rushed the process. I'll try the overnight method (and will NOT open that oven door) without the syrup and see how it goes.
meringue technique
I want to make meringue cookes (the kiss shaped crunchy ones).
I have made them before by beating whites with cream of tartar and adding sugar. There have been good and bad (either soft wet insides or overly browned outsides or both) batches.
So, I'm considering a recipe that calls for making a boiled simple syrup and adding that to the whites. It sounds odd (as if the boiling sugar would deflate the whites) but interesting.
Anyone tried the latter technique? Thoughts? (I have only a hand held electric beater if that matters ... no standing mixer.)
What else can I use tahini for?
I LOVE it. Can't keep it at home live it. So once replaced the peanut butter in peanut butter squares (the ones where you mix PB, powered sugar, graham crackers, etc and press them into a pan and then top with chocolate) with tahini. Good but would have been better with a stronger sesame flavor. All the sugar/graham crackers seemed to stand out more.
Crack Pie recipe is a LIE
Did you really find the real thing worth replicating? I lived next to the Milk bar for several years and still don't get all the fuss. I had one good soft serve but tried a least 10 that weren't so hot. Never went for the pie, though. Is it the one thing that makes the place noteworthy?
Best Indian food in DC?
Himalayan Heritage on 18th street (near Kalorama). It may not have all the dishes you are looking for but is affordable, nice atmosphere, and some great dishes. Highly recommend the vegetable tandori if you like lots of grilled, flavorful veggies and the lamb appetizer.

Help....need dairy free hor d'oeuvre or app. with bacon
Wrap an uncooked shrimp with a piece (or half depending on size of shrimp and bacon) of bacon. Skewer and repeat to fill skewer. Brush with good bbq sauce and grill or broil. Also awesome with scallops.
recipes with a "surprise"?!
Soup dumplings were my first thought ... then I remembered I'd be taking the metro and a bus there :)
recipes with a "surprise"?!
I need a potluck dish that meets the trick or treat theme but not halloween theme. Basically, a recipe with a trick/surprise.
Thought of caramel corn with bacon crumbles. But these days bacon is more expected than a suprirse.
We did have a friend stuff turkey burgers with peanut butter this weekend and cook them up for us. It was surprising and I'm considering trying little meatballs with peanut butter filling but the ones we had were not quite there yet (turkey a bit dry and unseasoned). So not ready for prime time.
So...any ideas? Sweet or savory is fine.
Where to buy Indian Spices online? [moved from Home Cooking]
http://kalustyans.com/
Spices and much more. If you are in NYC go in person but if not ... online is second best. The tahini selection (and other similar things) is great too.
Dried Apricot Pie
http://www.epicurious.com/recipes/food/views/Apricot-Tart-with-Cornmeal-Crust-104527
This recipe provides one of my favorite tart crusts ever (easy and great crunch/flavor) I am sharing since the original calls for dried apricots. But, it is not a pie and the layer of apricot is thin and I've often wanted to play around with a different filling ... so keep that in mind :)
cheese to post with mole dish
Goat with shrimp and mole?! I never would have thought of it but I'm willing to try.
