CIBO in Sausalito easily has the best espresso in Marin

They're using Blue Bottle 17 Ft. Ceiling for their espresso drinks and even though Cafe on the Common in Ross is also using Blue Bottle, CIBO makes a much better espresso, cappuccino and macchiato.

Frosted Cupcakery - Hollywood

I was in Los Angeles for a couple of days earlier this week and came across Frosted Cupcakery on the corner of Highland and Lexington in Hollywood. They have parking so I pulled in, despite my usual dislike of non-homemade cupcakes as I find them to be too sweet. These cupcakes were AWESOME. Not too sweet at all - they tasted like homemade, yet elevated.

I stopped by the following day and during my two visits, I had the chocolate with peanut butter (twice), the chocolate with chocolate and chocolate with mint chip. All were great and believe me, it's tripping me out as a grown man to be getting this excited about cupcakes.

Nice staff, great cupcakes and parking...now all they need is a Kogi truck parked out front.

Where to take visiting Italians?

I have some business colleagues from Verona, Italy coming to town next week and I want to take them to some restaurants that they cannot replicate at home. Obviously, Italian is out. So far I'm thinking Sebo and Slanted Door. One of my guests is pretty "stuffy/uptight", so my favorite Taquerias in the Mission are out. I'll probably take them on a cable car ride down California Street to Swan's also...

TIA

Cafe Gibraltar - El Granada (Half Moon Bay)

Had an excellent dinner at Cafe Gibraltar last night. It was one of those rare clear nights on the San Mateo coast that certainly added to the enjoyment of the evening. The restaurant is pan-Mediterranean in influence with a few of the chef's own creations mixed in. Here's what we had:

+ Turkish octopus and calamari salad - perfectly prepared squid with an amazingly tender texture. Overall flavors were outstanding.

+ Oysters three ways - roasted with pimenton aioli, raw with avocado and fried with watermelon relish. Of the three preparations, the roasted stood out.

+ Watermelon and feta salad with roasted walnuts and harissa/citrus dressing - delicious and refreshing.

+ Crudo of white fish (not sure of the species) with coconut cream, avocado and jalapeno. Great combination.

+ Sardinian "Cassola" - a fresh "stew" with scallops, crab and white fish in a light tomato/vegetable broth.

+ Provencal style rabbit - served over house-made pappardelle with mushrooms, onion and herbs. Really satisfying dish.

We shared several different wines by the glass to compliment the dishes. Our server recommended the perfect matches to the cuisine. We also shared a couple of outstanding desserts.

This was our first visit here, but it will certainly be part of our rotation. The food, much of it from organic farms surrounding the restaurant, is prepared with skill -- the chef knows to let the quality of the ingredients come through (and how to source high quality veggies, meat and seafood). The service was great - you could tell the staff enjoys working there. The wine list is well-chosen and reasonably priced.

I highly recommend Cafe Gibraltar as a great spot to dine on the San Mateo coast.

Is there a "funk" in Ritual's coffee?

If you can't find FG (even if you can), try Equator from San Rafael -- never had a bad blend or single origin from them...I order in the morning and pick up roasted-that-day beans...plus, they're nice people.

Looking for a taco catering service (not a truck) for a party of 20-30 people on July 18. A truck won't work because the party is at a home in Mill Valley that is on the side of a hill. Any suggestions?

What's the verdict on Cha Cha Cha's?

Have not been to La Mar, but Cha Cha Cha is not even close to being in the same league as Nopa. CCC has a fun homey vibe and mid-range prices, but so does Nopa and the food is MUCH better.

Blue Bottle permanent space open -- reports?

I agree that Four Barrel has the best espresso in town. For me, Blue Bottle is number two and Ritual number three. I've tried beans from all three, and none can beat Equator Coffee from San Rafael. I use a La Pavoni espresso machine at home (she's a temperamental bitch, but after a month of tinkering, I figured her out and she now makes the best espresso I've had in a home). Equator's Jaguar espresso blend is excellent.

Universal, Maverick, Delfina, Tartine?

I'd throw Range into the mix and rank them like this:
1. Delfina
2. Range
3. Bar Tartine
4. Maverick
5. Universal

Lucca on Chestnut and Valencia are not related. Lucca on Valencia is appreciably less expensive than Lucca on Chestnut and carries a much broader selection of Italian staples...and they have a free parking lot.

There is also a La Coppa in downtown Mill Valley. The quality is pretty good -- in order I prefer: 1. Four Barrel 2. Equator 3. Blue Bottle 4. Ritual. As a point of reference, I only drink espresso (which is why lighter roasts appeal to me).

Starbucks could, but won't, go with Direct Trade which is MUCH better for the grower, but requires a lot of effort to set up.
