Affordable Bershires Dinner Recs to Satisfy a Somewhat Jaded Brooklyn Family plus other Recs for Food Stops in the Berkshires?

Hi magiesmom! Haven't ever tried a croissant style stuffed pretzel. I stop at BE on every trip to the valley (am now enamoured by their quiche) . Will look for the pretzel next visit, thanks!

Bar and tapas menus at Rouge can keep light eaters under $20. You can also order off dinner menu, as some of the apps are of meal size, like the mussels.

Berkshires- Lenox Lee Seafood question

We're landlocked. Nothing is truly fresh. Try a trip to Troy Farmers Market some Saturday. There's a fish monger with fresh from Long Island fish and shellfish.

Well, since I (as a local) could have written the first half of your post (except for defunct Cafe Riva....she now has food to go at Berkshire Organics in Pittsfield), will recommend my new to go to place in GB, the Bistro Box.

Roadside dining, but as good as it gets, as long as you're not looking for a fine dining experience. There are a few postings on this board.

Recently had nice dinner at Prarie Whale, but that may be too dispaced Brooklyn. Good luck!

upcoming Mid Coast visit, need update

Assume you've already had breakfast at Thomaston Cafe. Always lovely. And yes, get to Suzuki, it's fantatic. Last time I was there she made me an off menu dinner plate of sashimi. Wish I had one tonight!

The Bistro Box

So I have to add my kudos. Finally made it to GB, and we had lunch at Bistro Box. As a fan of next to raw burgers, who now only eats grass fed beef, I tried the Box burger, but expected a smaller burger that couldn't be cooked rare. Was I wrong! Couldn't have been more pleasantly surprised. Definitely the best burger I've had in the area(sorry Rouge.)
We had o rings, they were perfect, friend had the Tuscan panini, also great. Even the lemonade rocked.
Wish it wasn't 45 minutes away!!!

Quick Lunch near Barrington Stage?

Checked the other day, BL is open for lunch. Forgot about Mission, probably the best option.

Yes, but the reiterations were done by the son(s), not run by the original couple.

BERKSHIRE eats ( staying near Hancock Ma)

Bob's is on Rt. 7 in Lanesboro. Mezze is great, but swamped in the summer. I love the ideas of the Meat Market, but you pay absolute top dollar for small servings. I'd pick Prairie Whale over that any day, also serves pasture raised meat. Supposed to have a great weekend brunch.

Quick Lunch near Barrington Stage?

I have to go with magiesmom's recommend.......I've had a few mediocre meals at Flavours, and have completely given up on Spice Dragon. Last 2 meals there were poor to terrible, including spring rolls that tasted rancid (could have been the oil).

No doubt making Mama cringe, if she saw her world class rolls reduced to inedible.

There's not much in downtown, but if it's there you could try How We Roll, sometimes parked next to the old CSB building on North St. Consistently good, and cheap! Check their page for where they are.

Is Baba Louis open for lunch? Thought they opened @ 5.

Thanks. Think I'll stick with memories of the original Dragon for that spot; every restaurant since seems doomed.

Pioneer Valley: Thinking outside the box

If you're heading towards the Berkshires, try the Williamsburg Snack Bar on Rt. 9. It's on your right heading west, can't miss the bright pastels. Great food, epecially the seafood. ....fresh and very reasonably priced. You can search Chowhound, it's a favorite.

Pittsfield - any update on the openings of the new restaurants?

Supposedly. Da-Koto, owners connected with Koto in Allendale. I go past it all the time and have seen no real signs of progress. So they're likely missing out on tourist season. Which, if food is like Koto, may not be a great loss.

Pig roast recommendations near Albany/Mass. border?

I second Lenox's recommendation. You won't get better pasture raised meat.

Electra's Cafe Pittsfield Ma

I ate lunch there, maybe a year ago, and was disappointed. Had spanikopita that was somewhat bland, no flakiness, poorly reheated. Side of salad not worth mentioning. Companion had a burger that I thought seriously overpriced for everyday Cisco level beef.

Obviously, haven't been back. Tsarina, Maggiesmom, have you been to Sutter's meat yet?

Oriental Flavors; Amherst Ma

CCK now is Ocean Palace, across Central Ave.and a little further towards downtown. Nicer looking spot, and I think even better. Worth the try, for sure.

Hi Tsarina and Maggie: read this review and was thinking that will have to be my next lunch stop when I'm over in the valley. Don't usually get further than S. Hadley, but O.F. sounds wonderful.
Recently had a great lunch at Ocean Palace (?) in Albany, but that's another board.
It would be delightful to find each other sometime.

ISO: killer chocolate cake in Pioneer Valley

I'm a chocolate baker, and really fussy about chocolate cake, etc. I haven't found anything in the valley that knocks my socks off, but wanted to share that I love, and drive a long way to get, Bread Euphoria in Hadleyville's chocolate bouchons (they freeze beautifully.) They are not traditional bouchons; are very dry and cocoa based, with added chocolate chunks, and made in a muffin tin. Extremely chocolaty.

Unfortunately, though their little cakes and cupcakes are well made and lovely to look at (and gift), I don't care for thier chocolate stout cake, and find their buttercream less than perfect.

If you're ever in the Berkshires, stop at Chocolate Springs on Rt. 20 btwn Pittsfield and Lenox, and try his chocolate cupcake with true vanilla buttercream.

Sunday Brunch in the Berkshires (or within an hour of)

I can't recommend traveling to Gala. As saturngirl noted, it's acceptable, but nothing with a feel of the Berkshires. Hotel meal.

Burlington, VT on a Monday?

We're going to be in Burlington just for the day on Monday. I culled a lovely list of restaurants from previous postings, but almost all are closed Mondays.

Looking for mid-morning snack.....bakeries, etc. Then a dinner we can get to on the early side so we can hit the road early. Any food other than fast.
Thanks!

Long weekend on Maine Cost - feedback on plan?

Seabasket is excellent for fried fish, whole belly clams, oysters (in season, of course.)

Red's Lobster roll is just shelled lobster in a roll; you have to decide if it's worth the wait. Line moves very slowly.

I once had the best inexpensive lobster roll I've ever had at a little drive-up in the middle of Blue Hill....sorry, can't remember the name!

The Meat Market, Great Barrington

Good to know, rfn. I'd been planning on trying their pulled pork if I hit a day it was available as a sandwich. Thanks.

The Meat Market, Great Barrington

I've been having a problem too...love the concept, want to love the place but it's hit or miss. Have had some good, fresh meats (know what you mean about shriveled, Lettuce), primarily pork chops, but even there, some issues. I do eat and enjoy pork fat, and don't mind trimming some on my own at home, but when the fat cap is about half of the chop, and the price is astronomical......

As to prepared foods, have never had one of the lunch specials but did try the fried chicken dinner last summer. I love fried chicken, and don't cook it. It was good, but two tiny pieces and a side of a watermelon salad for a lot of money. It wasn't that good. Actually, though the chicken doesn't have the pasture raised heritage, The Flying Chicken in Troy, NY does great fried (brined) chicken, available by the piece, at KFC type prices.

I did get a pricy but delightful smoked duck breast from the Meat Market that I would purchase again.
