food and restaurant books

The Encyclopedia of Cajun and Creole Cuisine, by chef John Folse. Also Gumbo Tales, by Sara Roahen. The first is gigantic. Kind of a coffee table book, but incredible.

Birthday Dinner for 16 year old and 6 friends

Thanks to you both! I think the girls value fun over food, at this stage.... I'll present options to the Birthday Girl.

My French Quarter Plan - Am I On Track?

Perhaps your obnoxious rants would be more credible if you learned to spell, punctuate, and capitalize properly. Just a thought.

Birthday Dinner for 16 year old and 6 friends

I am taking my daughter and several of her friends to Atlanta for the weekend, staying by Perimeter Mall. I'd like to take them to dinner to celebrate, somewhere close, somewhere with multiple options as I don't know just how picky they might be, and hope to keep it under 40/ head.

Anyone able to help me? Thanks!

Late Night Great Food in the French Quarter

I think maybe you are getting Camellia Grill mixed up with the Clover Grill....Clover is on the colorful end of Bourbon, best for late night when alcohol has blurred your vision and memory of the lack of attention to health code. Camellia in the FQ is new, and not a health hazard, AFAIK. Not that Clover has not played a part in many a late night for me... ;-)

When will you be there? The Roadfood Festival will be at the end of March.

Put on yer reading glasses! It's Kukubura's trip report! (Mr. B's, Commander's, Gal's, Dante's, Dizzy's, Green Goddess, more...)

Paul is great! I peek in when I go past, and will NOT stop unless he is behind the bar.

Skillful NOLA Chowhounding, Generally....

An antinausea medication, in case of, um, too much, um, dancing. Or an accidental late night trip to the Clover Grill as a result of too much, um, dancing!

I also try to eat just one really heavy meal per day, but honestly that rarely works for me. Too much wonderful food available!

Another strategy I have used is to peck about; go one place for a few oysters, walk, get a muff, walk, get some BBQ shrimp, walk....you get the picture. We did an oyster crawl one year, just did some research, made a map and planned a half dozen of every different recipe we could find within walking distance....big fun!

Skillful NOLA Chowhounding, Generally....

I go to NOLA every year, and plan my visit around food. What we usually do is eat an early lunch, do a LOT of walking, and get a late dinner, then go dancing and / or more walking around. I am not an exceptionally big eater at home, but do like to maximize my options when on vacation. So a good blend of spaced out dining, some exercise and plenty of water usually works for me. And a cache of PeptoBismol and some phenergan in case of emergency!

Oh, and stretchy pants....

Okay...but say we go during warm weather, near the end of dinner service? I guess I am asking if this would be considered tacky, or just unusual. Or fine.

Rice pudding...

Is it possible to go to l'Ami Jean and perhaps sit at the bar just for the rice pudding?

Saturday afternoon bar where a group can be loud & raucous

I'd head to someplace in the FQ, harder to offend anyone on Bourbon with a penis hat. As a matter of fact, it may be de rigeur in some places.

Hmmmm, two NO votes for Luizza's.....reconsider, reconsider. My cousin had their BBQ shrimp po boy last year and has been wanting to go back. is it just not good any longer?

I do love the look of Emeril's menu, and it has gotten good reviews on the board, as have the other two. Is there a particular reason to avoid Bon Ton, or just not as big a fan as the others?

BTW, we have spa appts at 1:00 so a brunch type breakfast around 10:30 or 11:00, then plan to waddle / wander to the spa, hope to not have extra full bellies on the massage table! If I went to CP I would snore right on thru the whole thing!

Okay, as I feared I'm not going to be able to get a bargain! I was afraid it would not be worth it, I wait all year for my NOLA trip and hate to waste a meal on "meh", free or not.

I love Mr. B's and was planning to drop in for a cocktail and a plate of BBQ shrimp anyhow, may have to do it for brunch! Will check put the offerings at Coquette as well....thanks for the input!

Plans for coming weekend....criticism? Advice? Agreement?

We ( 2 cousins celebrating an important mutual birthday! ) arrive just before lunch on Saturday, plan to stop at Liuzza's BTT on the way to the FQ. Check in, stroll around and sample cocktails, nap....and dinner at Galatoire's.

Sunday brunch at Court of Two Sisters ( hey, free coupon for two with hotel reservation), then wander about and sample cocktails neglected the day before. Sunday evening, maybe Coops or Fiorellas for a lighter dinner before we check out the Trashy Disco night at LaFitte's In Exile...sounds too fun to pass up! (Plus we have sequined dresses we have been dying to wear!) Likely to hit Clover Grill for bedtime snack, maybe Camellia since now in FQ. Or an All That Jazz from Verti Marte.

Monday a late breakfast at Stanley, then a spa day. Dinner at Bon Ton. What to do Monday night????

Tuesday lunch at August, then pack up and head home, after picking up to go muffs at CG for those left at home.

Anything we need to change? Add? Suggestions?

Fun/nice French Quarter Restaurant for a Group

Emeril's isn't in the quarter, though...

I am wondering what sort of event or setting you have in mind....wedding? Business meeting? That might help people make appropriate suggestions. Also, what day of the week....lots of restaurants are closed on Mondays.

New Orleans on a diet....

Hmmm......dilemma dilemma. Raw oysters, if you leave out the crackers. Always yummy. Most of the better restaurants would be glad to leave off the sauces on a piece of grilled fish, I bet. Just shop the menus and see who has the best looking lower cal /lower fat sides. Green Goddess, while not really traditionally NOLA food looks to have some options that fit your bill.
Remember, too, that red wine is heart healthy...and vodka has only 60 calories per shot!

So, if it's FREE?

That's what I am thinking, if it's awful, we leave. It is just that my time and appetite are limited....and I hate to waste a bit of either on anything not wonderful! I went while on a trip in High school....moons ago...and it was "super fancy" for a little redneck girl. I guess we shall see what time and miles have done to both me and the two sisters.

So, if it's FREE?

We are headed to NOLA in a few weeks, our hotel deal includes free brunch at Court of Two Sisters. I have seen it pretty much universally panned in the discussions... But is it bad enough to turn down if it is gratis?

Where to go vs. where to repeat?

I do love the BBQ shrimp at Mr B's, that is always on my list in one way or another for my annual trip....dinner or an app serving at the bar. Galatoire's is almost always on the list as well. How about the lunch special at August? I love the fried chicken at Fiorella's, Clover Grill is a classic, just not for the faint of heart...Camellia Grill now has a FQ address as well.
No info re: chicken bonne femme but the bar ( and bartender Paul) at Tujaque's is wonderful. never miss Cdoissant D'or either. Mmmmm only 27 days until I am back!!!

After the hoopla.....

The two of us will be coming for our annual visit to NOLA the weekend after Mardi Gras...Sat to Wed. Will there be concerns with restaurants being closed? Should we expect the crowds to stick around for the weekend?

Not sure what the recovery prognosis is from all the revelry, any advice appreciated.
Thanks!
