Cafe Gitane couscous

Thanks EZchow. I'm going to try your spice blend and see how it goes.

Braise

Anyone tried the new restaurant from the chef of Jezebel on the east side? Do they have their liquor license yet or let you BYOB?

Cafe Gitane couscous

I am a former New Yorker with a mad craving for Cafe Gitane's couscous. Does anyone have the recipe or could help me with the ingredients? I remember potatoes, bell peppers and eggplant (all likely oven roasted), chicken, lamb merguez sausage and hummus on top. Am I missing anything? Are there raisins or currants? Tips on what spices to add?

Thanks!

Bachelor Weekend in Austin: Best Weekend Brunch?

I would recommend Lambert's on 2nd Street. They do a Sunday brunch buffet that is excellent but the price also includes ordering some eggs and other dishes made to order. Their bloody marys are my favorite in the city. It's definitely a fun crowd and there is plenty to do in the area before/after brunch. South Congress Cafe would be my second pick. Both can accomodate a large group although South Congress Cafe may not take reservations.

Is Uchi a must for West Coasters who already eat their weight in seafood?

As an early 30s lady myself I say absolutely on Uchi. I have lived in LA and NYC and Uchi is the best overall food/experience combo of any japanese restaurant I've been to. It is tough for a group as they only have one or two tables that seat 6, so I would go around 6:30 if you want to sit down by 8/8:30. Go down the street to Paggi House for a drink if you don't want to wait there. I would budget $75/person if you're ordering mid priced wine/sake.

I do not recommend Max's. I've been twice now since it opened and while the food is tasty it is impossible to find anything on the menu that's healthy but if you're ok with lots of heavy fried food in a really loud atmosphere then go for it. I think there are much better places out there.

Other recommendations for a group: Vespaio, Lambert's, Perla's, La Condesa, Olivia are all fun, trendy places with great food. I love Fonda San Miguel although it will be a slightly older crowd and is not in downtown or SoCo but it's worth going.

Late night in Santa Fe?

Any suggestions for somewhere with a lively atmosphere, maybe some music and a bite to eat at 10pm on a Friday night? Does El Farol serve at the bar past 10? What about Cowgirl? Other suggestions I've gotten are Del Charro or Staab House.

New Restaurant Jezebel in Austin?

Ate there last week and loved it. Went with my mom who is a major foodie and she was very impressed. We had heard that the portions were large so decided to share a few things. Started with the baked feta appetizer special. It was topped with diced red peppers and crab meat and was really amazing. Then shared the caesar which was described as a "grilled" romaine salad. My mom and I both loved grilled romaine so we ordered that, but turned out the "grilled" was in quotations marks because the salad was drizzled with a dressing that made it appear that it had grill marks on it. Wouldn't order this again. Not much flavor to the dressing. Lastly we split the lamb shank for our entree. The kitchen offered to split it onto separate plates for only $5, and the portions were more than enough. The lamb melted in your mouth and the seasoning and sauce was delicious. As far as wines go we decided to go by the glass because we wanted to start with a white and then get a red with dinner. They were out of the red we ordered so the waitress asked the chef for recommendations and came back with two for us to taste. I must say service was a little slow at first. We had to wave down someone to take our order, but after that it ran smoothly. Our tab was about $130 for two people, which seemed a little high considering we shared everything, but it was well worth the money. I'll come back here for a special occasion anytime.

Argentina Trip Report (long)

My friends and I are thinking about staying at Cavas Wine Lodge when we are in Argentina in May. As far as the all-inclusive package goes, does it cover your meals when you go visit wineries or only meals at Cavas? Between staying there or at the Park Hyatt in Mendoza, what would you recommend?
