Foodie's first trip to New Orleans and needs advice!!

Just got back and found I vastly preferred the music scene on Frenchmen Street (in Marigny) to what is in the French Quarter. The clubs seem to be concentrated on the river side of Washington Square Park.

Sunday Brunch Spot

All that, and I failed to leave a recommendation. I enjoyed brunch at The Mission in Scottsdale. More Latin-American than just Mexican, and I think on Sundays they do a pig roast.

Sunday Brunch Spot

Wow, I thought the same thing at first about the Cliff House (food nothing special, view of endless ocean and SF haze), and then I thought about some of the stories and personal memories I have of the place. (I'll bet anyone who's ever been there has one.) And that's what's a little different and maybe missing about Phoenix. On the other hand that jalapeno hollandaise is maybe what's missing elsewhere. Don't get me wrong I am a transplant too and the southwest kitsch really annoyed me at first, but just take a look around and notice how the ecosystem here is like nothing anywhere else in the world, and realize that it's just an attempt to reflect that in cuisine. When you mention "brunch" it's as much the experience as the meal you're referring too, and I'll confess I haven't found one I love here in town to compare with experiences in other cities. But I am sure I'll hear about them on this board -- could take a while, though. .

Best steakhouse in Phoenix

And this is the issue I have with steakhouses in general, which is that their primary fare is one that I could do myself with a minimum of effort, and my results are often better than that of the steakhouse. Now, there are a few that offer more. You mentioned Fleming's, which used to do a decent versin of Beef Wellington. That's a dish I don't feel like tackling myself, but the last I checked they had reworked their menu and dropped it.

Ditto, I am a sucker for the chopped liver appetizer. The other steakhouses mentioned could be anywhere, but Don and Charlies is definitely Scottsdale.

Sour cherries - can they be found anywhere in the valley?

The marasca cherry is the original one used for Maraschino cherries, but they're impossible to find; I am told Royal Anne cherries are usually used. The Marasca is a variant of the Morello, which you may be able to find. Similar is the Montmorency, the "pie cherry."

Whats the concensus on Someburros?

I haven't been back to the North Scottsdale location since it opened. My burro was one-half sour cream because it had been rolled sideways.

Humble Pie on Groupon today

I don't think it is good at all locations, you have to choose one of the three at time of purchase. That was enough to make me think twice. I hate additional restrictions.

in search of amazing espresso and vegetarian food

This isn't as close as you might like but it is not as far as Tempe -- North Scottsdale has a very nice vegetarian restaurant called Fresh Mint that is vegetarian (most dishes are vegan) with an Asian bent. It's not far off the 101 so that might be convenient.

I personally am not a fan of Sonoran Mexican cuisine, which predominates in these parts. My current personal fave for Latin American cuisine is The Mission in downtown Scottsdale.

Burmese in Scottsdale - Little Rangoon

This is the same location where "Such is Life" went under a few years back. Several times, if I recall... George & Son had a Burmese dish on their menu at one time which didn't lead me to seek out more of the cuisine.

Help! Any info on where I can purchase grass-fed cows' milk and cheeses in the Phoenix valley?

There is a grass-fed cheddar from New Zealand that Trader Joe's usually carries which is both inexpensive and delicious, but I don't think it qualifies as "organic."

authentic cheese curds in phoenix area

Trader Joe's had them for a while, but the whole reason you see them in Wisconsin and not here is that after just a day or two the moisture balance changes and they lose their distinctive texture. The package suggests briefly microwaving the curds which sounds to me like something that ought to be illegal. I just let them come to room temperature and every once in a while I can get one to "squeak."

And be sure to get extra tortillas, maybe some red or green chile to take home, assemble with whatever "extras" you might desire! I just used one of those tortillas for today's lunch...

Not if the menu posted on the website (http://www.clancysomaha.com/) is any indication. They do have gizzards, though.

Fish & Chips - Scottsdale

I understand the venue has been sold is being converted into a Irish bar/pizza/sandwich joint, "Clancy's Pub." I guess the owner of the small Omaha, Nebraska (!) chain has decided to spend winters in Arizona...

Looking for a truly authentic Italian restaurant (Scottsdale, AZ)

I'm dying to learn where the OP stays when in Italy. Andreoli and Trattoria Veneto are both great Italian restaurants, but they represent traditions from opposite ends of the country and their menus have very little in common.

Breakfast outside of Phoenix

I think the place you're describing is "Four Bees" or "4 B's" or something like that -- it's just a small white building off on the left of one of the exits to Black Canyon City (not sure which one). They are nothing fancy, but I remember them being quite busy.

If you're looking for another slice of rural Arizoniana there's a saloon a little farther down that road on the right...

cinco de mayo - getting my goat - PHX

Twenty years ago when I was in Houston it was not unusual to see cabrito and birria on menus in Mexican restaurants, and I seem to recall that even (Asian) Indian restaurants had goat dishes. I have yet to see any since moving to the Phoenix area. I'm surprised, since I understand these are most popular in the Northern parts of Mexico. Does anyone know where I might be able to find this in time for cinco de Mayo?

Dinner in downtown PHX?

Kincaid's is probably my favorite place to go before the Symphony -- it's right around the corner and the happy hour is exceptional, though the "serving towers" used for apps can be a little daunting. I haven't ordered dinner there but I managed to get one that was prepared in error for another table -- halibut cheeks with asparagus and garlic mashed potatoes. Not overly fancy but definitely not ordinary. I really like the place.

As for Copper River salmon, I only indulged once last year and may not again. A NY Times editorial (http://www.nytimes.com/2008/06/09/opi...) had a profound effect on me.

Dinner in downtown PHX?

mackerel nigiri can be a challenge -- it has a high oil content and spoils easily. The most common variety, saba, is almost always cured for this reason. Lately I have been getting aji (spanish mackerel or horse mackerel) which seem to not require the same curing; since they are so small you often end up using the whole fish for one serving, and then having the bones deep fried - delicious!

I may try this since I am headed downtown for a concert this week, but it's just a little further from the concert hall than I would like to walk, and there is a thread on Yelp regarding this place that isn't too favorable.

Phoenix In-N-Out Burger Near the Light Rail

I really liked In-N-Out until about a year ago... I stopped there last week (Scottsdale Promenade location) and actually had to discard my meal -- the fries were too greasy and the burger largely inedible. Has the quality of the beef they use declined markedly recently, or is it my imagination?

You might advise us where you are staying; there may be other similar offerings nearby that you might want to sample.
