ISO Japanese Mustard?

Where can I find the best Japanese mustard? Is there a particular brand that is the best quality?

I am talking about the deep yellow, earthy, somewhat spicy mustard that is very intense (maybe some horseradish?) and served in tiny amounts on the side of some dishes.

Any insight is much appreciated!

Decent Thai Food - South Bay (Near El Segundo)

I'm pretty sure that Bamboo is owned by the same family that owns the Thai Dishes in Manhattan Beach. There menu's are similar, right down to the font.

Best Lebanese food?

If you are in El Segundo then you should head over to Open Sesame next to Ralphs in Manhattan Beach. My former Lebanese-American coworker recommended it to me as being authentic. They also had some 10% off coupons in the Beach Reporter/Easy reader last week.

The same coworker also recommended some place, whose name escapes me, that is located on Sunset next to a famous club... maybe the Roxy or whisky a go go? Anyone know what place I'm talking about whether it's good?

Where to buy Lebanese garlic sauce? Westside or South Bay.

Open Sesame in Manhattan Beach (next to the Ralphs in the Manhattan Village Mall) has the garlic sauce and it's awesome. I'm sure you can ask for a to go order of it.

Raw Milk direct from the farmer?

I have seen a raw milk seller at the Torrance farmer's market on Saturday, on the southern side more towards the food stalls. Have no idea who he is or if his prices are fair, but it might be a lead.

Noor v. Watan in Hawthorne

I love Al Noor and have been to Al Watan once. Although I enjoyed Al Watan (I remember really liking their Saag), I didn't think it was as good as Al Noor overall. For starters, Al Watan doesn't have paneer!!! They do however do a good job with the tandori dishes.

As much as a I love Al Noor, it can at times be inconsistent. Overall, however, I would say that it's excellent, especially considering the prices. Next time you go try some of the paneer dishes and the chicken tala gosht.

Speaking of Lawndale Indian restaurants, there's also Anapurra gardens on Hawthorne by Saigon market. I haven't been there... yet.

Schezwan (Westchester) long closed... anything like that still exist?

On second thought, curious if the restaurant you are referring to is related to the Chinese restaurant that used to be on Lincoln, close to the intersection of Lincoln and Washington. I enjoyed the food there too. This restaurant, along with its ridiculous stucco ceiling that looking the stalactite formations inside a cave, is gone and has been replaced by a coffee shop and some other stuff.

It was called Seafood something.

Schezwan (Westchester) long closed... anything like that still exist?

No, I am 100% certain that this place is where the Hometown Buffet is now in Westchester, on Sepulveda, in the Shopping area where the Trader Joes, Crown Books, drug store (CVS?), and former Mervyn's Building is. Thanks though.

Schezwan (Westchester) long closed... anything like that still exist?

Although I think that thread is fascinating I'm fairly sure that the Chinese food that was served at this place in Westchester was different than 1950's Chinese food in LA. Then again, I wasn't alive in the 1950's so I guess I'm not in a position to make that judgment.

Any other insights anyone?

Schezwan (Westchester) long closed... anything like that still exist?

When I was really little, there was a Americanized Chinese restaurant on Sepulveda in Westchester called Schezwan. We're talking early to mid 1990's. The space is currently occupied by a Hometown Buffet.

Maybe it's the nostalgia, but I really loved this place. Did anyone eat at this place and, most importantly, know where I could find something close to it today?

Where can I rent a Shawarma machine?

It would be for home use.

Interesting idea about the rotisserie... my family owns a machine that can roast a lamb (basically a bed of coals with a spit and a big motor). I might just try to make it on that, although I was really hoping to go vertical.

Thanks Professor!

LA area cheese shop: Best bang for buck?

If you are looking for Parmesian Regiano, the Costco Wholesale for Business (different than regular costco) has an 1/8th of a wheel for $72 (~$7.50 a pound). I think they also have pecorino romano and a few other standards in the same giant size. The one closest to the South Bay is in Hawthrone on Prairie, a block or two north of El Segundo Blvd. Check it out.

REVIEW: Musha, Torrance

I went to Musha in Torrance last week, and although I was very satisfied with the meal, I was very disappointed that the Torrance branch no longer serves the sweet potato croquette that blew my mind at the Santa Monica branch. Does anyone know if this is a recent phenomenon?

Favorite Sausages for a cookout

Maybe I didn't read the thread carefully enough buy no one has mentioned Pontrelli & Laricchia's line of Maestro sausages, sold at Sorrento's Italian Market on Sepulveda in Culver City. They are good, and I swear their some fennel/anise in there that gives it a great flavor. There's also a spicy sausage that I haven't tried... yet.

http://www.pontrelli.com/products10.html

FYI, I think when you order sausages at Sorrento's, they are by default Maestros. So if you get a funny look when asking for Maestro's sausages, don't worry.

ISO "Salty Pork" & Sazon (the ingredients)

I found hormone free, non antibiotic, etc etc salt pork at Whole Foods. It's in the meat section, and it's called Ejay's Southern Smokehouse Salt Pork. It is a little more than double the price per pound than the mass-produced Hormel/Farmer John's salt pork I saw at Ralphs and Bristol Farms, but it was still a very reasonable $5 worth of pork... all of which went into about 10 cups of black beans. I think it's worth the premium.

ISO "Salty Pork" & Sazon (the ingredients)

Was given a recipe for Puerto Rican Black Beans that call for "salty pork". Questions:

1) Is this an easy to find item (Food 4 Less, Vons, etc?)

2) Is there a particular brand that is better than others?

3) Any hormone free, organic, blah blah blah purveyor salty pork available?

Thanks!!!

PS. Recipe also calls for Sazon, the blend of spices in a packet available from Goya and Knorr. Are there any places that make their own sazon that's not from these huge companies?

Are good strawberries to be had yet?

Bought some Seascapes from Harry Berries at the Torrance FM last saturday. I think they were pretty good, a step above the ones I got the week before. They kind of reminded me of the strawberries from Chino Farms in Rancho Sante Fe (SD County). However, they are indeed very expensive and I'm not sure the higher level of taste justifies paying 2x-3x more. I'd get a basket to try them but stick to my prior source for the majority of my strawberries.

Mozzarella: Where does Mozza get theirs?

Does anyone know where the Mozzas get their Mozzarella from? I LOVED the mozzarella when I was there and would like to track some down for myself. Or... perhaps someone knows of even better mozzarella and where I can get it?

Thanks!
