Sriracha Knock Offs

Supposedly the owner of Huy Fong foods never registered the name Sriracha so there are now numerous knock offs bearing the name but not the real deal. Have you encountered and used these imitations?? Are they anywhere close to the original??

Do you remember Hagen Dazs ice cream when they first started making it??

supposedly the founder and creator started making it in the Bronx right after world war 2. I grew up in Brooklyn in the 50s and 60s and early 70s. Never saw it being sold. Never heard of it until the early 70s when it was reported that the Neiman Marcus catalogue was going to offer it. Do you recall it being sold in the 5 boroughs before the 1980s??

Buttermilk

the Des Moines farmers market is one of the best in the country. MAYBE they sell real buttermilk though DM obviously isn't Minneapolis. Trying to find out if Kalona Dairy in Iowa does buttermilk. They sell their milk and other products up here

Buttermilk

if you really want to know what we need in the Twin Cities click on Cruze dairy farm. It is a small dairy farm near Knoxville Tn and they make their own real buttermilk right on the farm and sell it locally!!

Buttermilk

I called Hope Creamery at one time about this and was basically told that governmental bureauacracy kept them from producing the real stuff. Possibly the only real buttermilk in the entire country is the Kates brand in Maine

Are you old enough to remember Schrafft's ice cream and Restaurants??

this probably can only be answered by the over sixty crowd. What do you remember about the food, ice cream and environment?? For those under sixty, this chain and brand was popular back in the 50s 60s and maybe 70s.

I know there is Morey s brand of smoked fish @ Cub and Byerlys/Lunds has their own pre packaged house brand. Any other recs??

spicy beef. spicy chicken. spicy fish. dan dan noodles. it was inferior stuff. If a restaurant kitchen isn't on top of its game on a sat night, then something is wrong.

can you identify this London breakfast place (though it might not exist any more)

The famous New York Times foreign correspondent and food journalist R W Apple Jr many years ago found this workingman's greasy spoon breakfast place down by the Thames docks. Big platters of bangers and the full British breakfast with I think counter only sitting (no tables). I haven't been able to find the article in the NYT archives. Does this place ring a bell at all.

not a bad idea for a business venture to have a store overseas specializing in carrying American supermarket products. For American tourists. Expats. And foreigners who are curious. Peanut butter?? Mayo?? Canned chili?? Cambells soup?? Oreos??

Can You Get A Tongue Sandwich In the Twin Cities??

Dont want to schlep to Manhattan. And I have a craving. Even called the company that is most famous for tongue-- Freireich in North Carolina-- but the cost including fed ex overnight for an unsliced slab is over $100. For the squeamish or ignorant, we are talking what is a cooked/smoked deli product. Nothing gross about it. It is a NYC deli staple.
