Grocery Outlet Wine Sale 3/7-3/11 - What are you buying?

Any recommendations for white wines? The place is really hit or miss, and I'd prefer someone else make the mistakes before I do.
Thanks!

San Diego Restaurant Week 2009

Where's everyone going? Some places haven't put out their menus yet, but what are the best bets for a great meal? I like Terra in Hillcrest, but I'm not excited by their menu offer this year.

Best Pizza - San Diego

The best pizza in San Diego? Luigi's in Golden Hills. Then maybe Bongiorno's in Solana Beach, but they are not even close to the the best pizza in the west: Scholl's Apizza in Portland, Oregon. Drive a couple of days up north....just for the pizza.

Morgan Hill & Gilroy

Siam Thai is a pretty good restaurant I tried recently. A tad too much salt in the curry, but good food overall.

What do you recommend for either of these two towns? I really like Cafe 152 in Gilroy because it's simple and good cooking at excellent prices. You've got to see the size and quality of their salads and chicken dishes. Nothing fancy here, but all done very well.

North County San Diego - Oceanside Finds

Howdy again.
Found it! Best pizza in North County: Bongiorno's in Solana Beach- west of the I-5 on Lomas Santa Fe, then left on Stevens. Address is 524 and it's on the left a few blocks down.

Free Tap Water in Restaurants [moved from California board]

Certainly did order a lot of food, if you're asking me.

Free Tap Water in Restaurants [moved from California board]

The place in question does have a soda machine, and these come equipped with a tab for filtered water only. I seriously suspect that they're padding their bills by only offering to give the customer bottled water. It's a popular place and prices are not inexpensive for the portions of food they sell.
I thinks it's miserly of the owner(s) to have this policy. Just my opinion.

Free Tap Water in Restaurants [moved from California board]

Had an interesting experience at Pelly's Fish Restaurant in Carlsbad yesterday. I asked for a glass of tap water and was told by the cashier that they didn't offer water from the tap, but that I could buy it. I thought there was a law that required restaurants to offer tap water. I mean, they clean their dishes with it. I'm not a cheapy, I just don't mind drinking filtered water sometimes and that's what I wanted with my lunch.
Does anyone know if reestaurants are obligated to offer water? When I looked around I saw lots of bottled water at tables.

Basque in Bakersfield, CA?

No, I meant that the food doesn't resemble Basque cuisine in País Vasco.

Basque in Bakersfield, CA?

I hope somebody else who has had Basque food in the Basque Country of either Spain or France can tell me what their opinion is of the Basque food in Bakersfield or other places in the States.
I've been to Woolgrowers and it in no way resembled what I was used to in the Basque Country. Completely different animal. What gives?

Lunch List - North County SD

Hi Jeters! If you made it all the way over to Cafe Teri, then here are a few places I like for lunch in the area you might like to try: Thai Garden on Oceanside Blvd (just south of Melrose Ave.), Thai Pasta (in a strip mall off the 78 at the Emerald exit; south side of the 78), Mikko for sushi at 1/2 price with another person to share (Carlsbad Village Dr. just west of the I-5). La Paloma (at the corner of Vista Village Dr. and Escondido Ave) is hit or miss depending on what you order. The seabass quesadillas were a hit both times I tried them. Other stuff? Not so much.
I actually prefer King's Fish House to Fish House Veracruz because the former knows what to do with vegetables. Both serve excellent fish.
Also, try Vinaka Cafe in the Village Faire (or whatever it's called) in downtown Carlsbad by the 101. They have excellent individual quiches.

Odd Food in San Diego County

Thanks Joseph! Iraqi, Ethiopean and Somalian would fall under that category for me. I left the question open-ended because I was curious to see what others might consider unique in the area. Any odd 'fusion' type place would be welcome too.

Odd Food in San Diego County

I'm looking for something out of the ordinary. Not looking to eat a bug or anything like that, just something either novel or unique. Food from cuisines not typically found would do.
Thanks in advance!

North County San Diego - Oceanside Finds

Another New Yorker here. I haven't tried Bronx Pizza, but Luigi's is pretty good. http://www.sdreader.com/php/rrshow.ph...
Back to the Oceanside topic though, Thai Garden on Oceanside Blvd. is very good.

Good Seafood in Santa Barbara?

If you're a fan of clam chowder though, you would do well to visit Brophy Brothers in the harbor. The small menu is very good: baked clams, calamari, oysters rockefeller, etc...The place is always crowded, but the downstairs will often have a table free when upstairs is loud and packed.

Where is the best Thai restaurant near LAX?

I have to be near the LAX area tomorrow for dinner and want your recommendations for a great Thai restaurant to take my relatives to. Any ideas for something really good? I like Thai Nakorn, but that would be too far a drive.

San Diego restaurants are bad

I've also lived in Italy and Spain and other "great food destinations" and can honestly say that San Diego has some great food. At the very least, I can say that I've had some seriously wonderful meals. The last really good meal that comes to mind was Thanksgiving dinner at Terra in Hillcrest.
It's easy to see the over-generalizations in some of the statements made in the original post. Trust me, not every Italian restaurant is Michelin-rated.

Vegetarian/vegan restaurants in the Carlsbad area?

There's a completely vegan restaurant in Carlsbad Village called Cilantro's. They don't even heat their food past a certain temperature so as not to ruin the nutrients.
A better bet would be to try Lotus Thai on Carlsbad Village Drive just east of the 5 (go through the underpass and it's the first right. It now shares place with a Japanese/California fusion restaurant I haven't had the chance to try yet. The Thai place makes excellent "Fresh Rolls" and like most Thai places has some vegetarian meals.
If you eat pizza, Knockout Pizza is probably the best choice in Carlsbad (too bad you can't bring their slices into Pizza Port for the latter's beer and ales. There's also a Japanese deli next to Caldo Pomodoro (corner of Grand and State) that serves seaweed salads and tofu items. That's all I can think of for the moment.

Carlsbad Restaurants

Great replies! Thanks for your posts. Kings Fish House is indeed very good. I've got to try Greek Village one of these days. I looked at the menu once and it seemed pretty high so decided to pass on it. I'll get there eventually.
I'll be giving Tom Giblins a try very soon too.

Carlsbad Restaurants

I'd like recommendations for Carlsbad restaurants, especially downtown. Has anyone tried any of the following?:
Armenian Cafe, Fresco Trattoria, Le Passage, Vigilucci's, Caldo Pomodoro, Gregorio's, Jay's Gourmet Seafood & Pizza, Tom Giblin's.

For my part, I've been to several and will give my 'grades' and short notes instead of writing too long a post:
Lotus Thai: (B) excellent fresh rolls and fabulous satay; all else is kind of hit or miss.
Mikko: (C+) decent plate lunches (dinners), CA rolls and sushi seem OK.
Knockout Pizza (B) good NY-style thin, thin crust
Pizza Port (A+) for beer, (D) for pizza
Japanese Deli on State Street (C+) simple and good.
Coyote Bar & Grill (C+) haven't really eat here more than a couple of times.
Harbor Fish (F) runny clam (were there any) chowder, if you like fried fish maybe bump it up a grade.
Fish House Vera Cruz (B+) excellent fresh fish served with airplane food vegetables.

Oceanside dining suggestions?

Prices are modest. Meals are generally under or around $10 for dinner; about $6 for lunch. What Thai Garden does better than other Thai restaurants in the area are the curries. I think the Panang Curry is their best curry dish. Pad Thai is not so good anywhere, maybe with the exception of Thai Pasta in Vista (my second favorite in North County, althought the atmosphere is more like a diner).
There is also Lotus Thai on Carlsbad Village Dr just north of the I-5 in Carlsbad (right hand side behind Shell station), but you've got to be more selective in what you order here. They do the best satay of any place I've tried anywhere in SD and also do some excellent "fresh rolls". Other items are really hit or miss.

I totally agree with your comment DCF. I was going to suggest tracking down the owner and sending him or her the complaint as written.

Recommendation for San Diego

Cafe Chloe just a few blocks east of the gaslamp area is very good and gets good reviews from others on this forum. It's a small place, just in case you have numerous colleagues.
