Equipment for Cake Pops

Hi, anyone have any recommendations for equipment or kits to make cake pops? There's a "as seen on TV" kit but it doesn't get glorious reviews. I'm trying to by supplies as a gift and thought perhaps someone on this board might have some experience with good tools for making cake pops.

Thanks!

Looking for good food 1/2 btw Minneapolis and Rogers, MN

Well thanks for the replies. And TGI McSheannigans cracked me up. I gotta use that.

Forget anything good you have heard for breakfast/brunch

DQ, I've eaten in both locations. And I don't know why it wasn't anything special to me, it just wasn't. The food was fine, just nothing that would make me want to go back. I did really like the feel of the old space though versus the new space.

Looking for good food 1/2 btw Minneapolis and Rogers, MN

Hi,

I'm meeting a visiting friend for dinner next week and am looking for interesting (i.e, non-chain) and moderate to expensively priced dining opportunities either halfway between Minneapolis and Rogers, or closer to the Rogers side of things. I'd appreciate any suggestions!

Thanks!

Forget anything good you have heard for breakfast/brunch

Hi, I agree that you don't have to be a native to know a good breakfast place. I live here, am a Chicago native, and like to think I appreciate creative breakfast places. Wishbone and Bite used to be two of my go-to places for breakfast. But I have to tell you, I've never been impressed with Hell's Kitchen. I've always found it ho hum. So perhaps it's about personal taste and what you personally find interesting. Just an idea.

the Smack Shack Downtown Minny Food Truck

Good to know about the bread, thanks. It wasn't big chunks of claw, nor was it overflowing.

the Smack Shack Downtown Minny Food Truck

Hm, maybe two stars? I had the lobster roll, my lunch companions had the lobster roll and the crab po boy (special that day). We all had fries.

The lobster roll is actually served on toasted bread, rather than a roll. It's not very large and it's not stuffed with much lobster salad so we felt the price tag quite steep. I don't know what market price is for lobster these days but it may account for the current price. My companions didn't like the po boy at all since the crab was breaded and fried (as is the shrimp apparently) and just had no flavor. The fries come seasoned and we all felt there was too much seasoning, particularly salt, and that they were not crisp enough. The lobster salad itself was quite good, and maybe I'd consider going back but it would have to be for a pretty big craving.

Searching the Skyway...

Camille's is closed, fyi.

I prefer Torby's pizza to that at Andrea.

I'll put in recs for Brothers Deli, Good to Go (the wraps in US Bank mentioned by drew1300), Esquina Mexican Eats (accessible by skyway but at street level), Skyway Wok (particularly on Wednesday), and LouAnn's diner.

What local products to bring back from Chicago?

Do they have the pizza and focaccia there too? That is so much closer to where I usually stay when I visit. On the other hand, I just enjoy going to the bakery as it brings back so many wonderful memories.

And I agree, their bread is great.

What local products to bring back from Chicago?

Oh my goodness. I grew up in Chicago and am living in Minneapolis now. There are so many things I'd like to take home from visits. I don't know what you have available where you are now but one of my favorite places is D'Amato's Bakery, it's Italian. I recently brought home focaccia, pizza slices, and cookies. I brought a large storage container for the pizza and it travelled fine. I cannot get anything close to the taste and quality of their products here in Minneapolis...perhaps you can where you live.

Looking for best Vietnamese Papaya Salad with Tofu

We ended up at Cheng Heng in St. Paul. It wasn't quite what my sister was looking for in a papaya salad, but we all really enjoyed the food there.

K Wok now Baldy's BBQ?

The bus route I take to work passes by K Wok and today it had a sign in the window that said "Baldy's BBQ." This appears to be the second location of a place originating in Lakeville. Anyone know if it's good bbq? Anyone know if K Wok is relocating?

Best places to eat and buy ramps (MSP)

Yep, was at Craftsman this past weekend and had a lovely pasta with ramps, although I would have liked more ramps. It was ramps, creme fraiche, some sort of cheese I'm forgetting, tossed with the pasta and then served with a homemade pork sauage and a pork belly.

A couple years ago I had a cold ramp soup at Town Talk that was fantastic, so maybe they have ramp-inspired dishes this year?

Good ethnic buffets?

My husband and I looove the buffet at the Himalayan. It's not large, but ditto what Quince said -- it has everything you need. The down side it that it isn't a big room. If you have a large crowd, go later or make reservations.

We also like Gandhi Mahal. Solid food, space that can accommodate a larger group easily.

Both places have the most lovely owners, and we've never had a bad experience at either.

Looking for Red Pasta Sauce with Gorgonzola Recipe

Hm, that's not it but thanks for the try. It was something along the lines of sautee garlic, deglaze pan with red wine, and tomato sauce and other "typical" stuff and then throw in gorgonzola, simmer until incorporated. I'd be willing to bet the bacon would be sauteed with the garlic. Maybe I should just try making it up...

Looking for Red Pasta Sauce with Gorgonzola Recipe

Hi,

I used to have a fantastic recipe that incorporated Gogonzola into a "typical" Italian red sauce. I think it may have also had bacon and red wine. It used to be my "go to" red sauce but it's been years since I made it and cannot find the recipe and cannot remember exactly the proportions.

Does anyone have a similar recipe to share?

Thanks!

[MSP] Pancakes for lunch in downtown Mpls?

I'd recommend Checkered Apron. I like the place and they don't seem to be getting much business. They have breakfast all day. I haven't tried their pancakces, but their skillets are great, and everyone I've taken there likes it. They have your typical diner food. http://www.checkeredaproncafe.com/

I haven't tried Louann's yet. I'll have to check it out.

Charlotte, NC recs?

Thank you for the recs! We didn't do as much eating as I would have liked, but we sure did a lot of walking. I cannot even remember the route we took, but we covered downtown, 4th Ward, Plaza-Midwood, Elizabeth, and I don't even know where else.

At any rate, Mert's was right by our hotel and was fantastic. Honestly, I could have eaten every meal there and been happy. We also ate at Dish....if I lived in that area I'd hang out there all the time. The food hit the spot.

We also ate at our hotel the last night (Caffe Siena), after being so tired of walking all day. That was actually really good, and a good value compared to what we would spend for a similar meal at home (Minneapolis). The presentation was a little over the top....think bread served in wine goblets...but we enjoyed it nonetheless.

Finally, I cannot express how friendly everyone was. Service was great everywhere, and everyone was so helpful everywhere we went. It was a refreshing change from the typical "Minnesota Nice" i.e. friendly reservedness. :)

Thanks again!

Charlotte, NC recs?

Hi, my hubby, sis and I will be spending 3 nights & 2 days in Charlotte. 5/1 near the airport and then 5/4 & 5/5 downtown. I'd love your recommendations for cheap eats, at preferably veggie-friendly places near where we're staying. We love all cuisines, and are happy to hop on public transit or walk distances for good food. We prefer to avoid chains and tourist traps.

We'll be in Sumter, SC in between our stay in Charlotte, so if there are any recs there we'd love those too.

Thanks much for any advice!

Minneapolis - T's Place

I haven't seen anyone post about T's Place and went there yesterday for lunch and thought I'd share. Friends had dined there for dinner earlier in the week and had rave reviews.

We got there at 1 PM and it wasn't yet open although the hours posted said it opened at 11 AM. About 1:15 they were open.

The owner was gracious, friendly, and attentive...but we were the only folks in the place. We had Yesiga Sambusa as an appetizer, two large pastries stuffed with spiced ground beef. They were very flavorful. I had the vegetarian combo plate that had a variety of Ethiopian vegetables served on Injera. All were good, on a par with your "standard" Ethiopian places. It was a considerable amount of food, and I'm in fact having left overs for the second time tonight. My husband had the Ethio Asian Fried Rice, described as "fried rice with Ethiopain spicy sauce with chicken, eggs & vegetables." Think fried rice but with unusual seasoning. This was fantastic, and something we would definitely go back for again and again. The fusion of flavors and ingredients worked really well, and wasn't like anything I've had before.

The owner said they had live jazz on Wednesday nights, and we'll probably go back to check that out. It seems like the place might be struggling a bit, and the owner talked with us quite a bit to try and get ideas of what would draw people in. Hopefully it will stay afloat, and that others will find his fusion dishes worth a visit. It's at 2713 East Lake Street.
