Upscale Mexican in Baltimore or DC???

Baltimorean here. My husband and I have enjoyed Miguel's:

although it's been a while. Great view!

Vegetarian "ham" in Baltimore

My husband is a vegetarian and interested in finding new fake meats. We live in Baltimore city. He recently found vegetarian ham online, but with a $50 minimum order, which is a bit of a leap of faith for soy products! Any leads on local vegetarian ham (or other entertaining fake meat suppliers locally)? We've been on a recent and thorough trawl of H-Mart in Catonsville, so have a pretty good idea of what their stock is. Thanks, all!

broccoli rabe in Baltimore

Thanks, everyone! I'll stop by Mt. Washington (the closest option) this weekend, and venture further to DiPasquale's or H-Mart if needed.

broccoli rabe in Baltimore

I've been looking without success for broccoli rabe in the Baltimore city area. Local supermarkets have been of no help. Is it simply the wrong season? does this require an Italian market to recreate my grandmother's "bitter broccoli" recipe? Any suggestions welcome!

Miguels - Baltimore - Silo Point

Thanks for posting about Miguel's! my husband and I were in the neighborhood and stopped in last night. It reminded me of Jose Garces' Distrito in Philadelphia--lots of small plates beautifully presented. My husband regretted they were out of grasshopper tostaditas. My favorites were the hongos but squash blossom....empanadas, I think? were also quite good--and he loved the mole! Super nice staff and nice space. Husband later said this place is owned by the Blue Agave folks....we'll go back.

Cranberry Culprit

My husband made a pitcher of these for after Thanksgiving dinner and got rave reviews. The ginger ale and amaretto really mellowed out the bourbon, and they looked festive in martini glasses with their lime wedges.

Rocket to Venus in the Hampden neighborhood, Baltimore--right near Miracle on 34th Street's massive blocklong Christmas light display (at least starting tomorrow)

"flu-killer soup" on Capitol Hill

My husband and I were talking about home remedies for colds. He was just testifying about a "flu-killer" soup (apparently advertised as such) he used to get at a sushi place around Capitol Hill (early-mid 90's I think). He remembers it as being delicious, possibly containing miso and ginger, and bringing him back from the brink of a nasty illness. Does anyone have any memories about what this was, what was in it, and whether it still exists? (He thinks the restaurant may still be in business, but we don't live in the district so who knows....) Thanks for any leads!

confession time (phila)

Very belated thank you! I didn't get to the Fair Food Farmstand until earlier this fall, but the vegan scrapple (high up in the refrigerated meats case!) was a big hit in my household.

Quiet bars

My husband and I live in University City. We like to go out for the occasional cocktail, and bars we've enjoyed range from dives to classy. But the decibel level in lots of bars has become increasingly loud--or are we just getting old? I know there are places we could go during the week or early that wouldn't be noisy....yet. Any suggestions for relatively quiet bars we could go for a drink on a Friday or Saturday night?

Our favorite Philadelphia bar right now is the Sidecar, which we love but suspect would be loud on the weekends. We're willing to travel and explore, though!

Distrito

This sounds great, and it's in our neighborhood! I'm excited. However, my husband is a vegetarian and looked at the menu--their summer menu didn't seem to have a lot of veggie choices. Any vegetarians willing to share their experiences here?

WEDDING CAKE FILLINGS

Sounds tasty--have you considered posting to the Home Cooking board? that way you'll get suggestions from people all over the country, not just in Pennsylvania....

Yes, we'll be at the 10:30 show too! The first "real" date my husband and I went on was to a Magnetic Fields concert, and our best wedding present was a ukulele signed by Stephin Merritt.

pre-concert dinner near Old Town School of Folk Music

Hello Chicagoans,
It's been 5 years since I lived in Chicago, and husband and I are visiting next weekend. Mostly we'll be hanging out in my old haunts (Ravenswood/Andersonville area) but we're going to a Saturday night concert at Old Town School of Folk Music. I suspect there are lots of options, but don't remember the area that well. My goal is a moderately priced dinner for 2 with lots of vegetarian options for husband, and a noise level that permits conversation--but with a dash of style. Any suggestions would be welcome; also any friendly local bars to catch a drink afterwards.
Thanks much!

Dock Street Brewery Hours

Can I just mention, husband and I were just there and you can get a "beer flight" for $7: ours was 6 small glasses of everything on tap plus a new beer that's probably just been released. I didn't love everything, but it's a fun way to try them all. The place has been quite hopping; seems like people are excited about having it there.

Manayunk: Recommendations?

Rarely eat there, but last time I did it was Machismo Burrito. Non-chain build your own burrito that kept vegetarian husband happy, perfectly pleasant for lunch out.

vegetarian cheesesteak cravings

OK, we ended up going to husband's choice: Sorrentino's in Manayunk. It's a little corner deli with some tables in the back, and they offer vegetarian cheesesteak in your choice of "beef" or "chicken." It's about $5 for a footlong narrow sandwich cut in half, and he liked his. (I got a standard meat one, which was perfectly functional.) He is now happily planning to come back for the "chicken" version, plus Copabanana in University City apparently offers veg cheesesteak as well and margaritas should dining with undergrads become too stressful....

Husband has actually tried the Reading Terminal one (just found this out!) and did not like the texture of the fake meat, although cannot remember anything more specific.

p.s. he's not vegan, so the composition of the cheese is not an issue!

vegetarian cheesesteak cravings

My husband is craving vegetarian cheesesteak this weekend. He has had the one at Gianna's (though Gianna's Jr. if there's a difference). We live in University City, are willing to travel a bit but maybe not to distant suburbs. Recommendations?

Colombian cheese

Thanks, paulj!
This site is helpful--the queso blanco that doesn't melt sounds most like it. Interesting....

Colombian cheese

Recently picked up some "Colombian cheese" at a local supermarket with an emphasis on international products (Fresh Supreme, Philadelphia, PA--large immigrant population locally). Husband shredded some for a casserole and it did not melt--it kind of shriveled. The label is now lost, but vinegar was listed as an ingredient, it was pasteurized, and I'm pretty sure it's a cow's milk cheese. I'm just gnawing on a piece now. The texture's a bit more rubbery than an aged cheddar, and it's mild and not at all salty.

Has anyone else met the mysterious Colombian cheese? and any interesting suggestions on what to do with it?

gift certificate for brother in Carroll Gardens/Cobble Hill area

It's January and I have not yet finished my holiday shopping! My workaholic foodie brother lives in Carroll Gardens close to Smith St. and Court St. and I had wanted to get him a gift certificate to a tasty restaurant in the area. Attempts to contact his local friends to weasel recommendations were unsuccessful, and online the choices are overwhelming. He is an unpretentious omnivore. Somewhere with takeout would be helpful. Thanks for any suggestions!
