Does anyone know where I can get green or young coconuts in montreal?
The young coconuts I've seen are usually found in Asian markets that have many Indian and SE Asian clients. I believe the exporters shave off the coconut hull before shipping so the young coconut looks like a giant egg with shallow point on one end. I haven't seen whole green-hulled coconuts for a long time,

Alligator Meat
I was wandering around Chinatown when I went to the newest supermarket in the basement of the new building in Chinatown on St-Laurent blvd. Just in the street level entrance is a small kiosk and they had a little open freezer with what looked like frozen abalone and packets of frozen alligator meat. So if anybody is adventurous and wants to try preparing alligator at home, it's available.
Bread in NDG/Westmount
I still go to Banette for bread on occasion but I tend to go once or twice a week for the croissants, which I have with a coffee in the bakery. The regular croissants here are very flaky; when you break it open, it has the structure you expect from a good croissant, layer upon layer with a light buttery taste. I come here also for the roquefort cheese sticks and the anchovy sticks when it's available.
The clerk told me that their bread is made from Canadian flour but the special mix comes from France. I presume she means the sourdough starter. Banette I believe is a franchise from France and the baker is from France.
There's about eight varieties of bread they make for sale, I've had their baguette and a country style loaf of a whole grain and enjoyed them.
When will the Alfonso and Kesar Mango Season Start and End?
It seems Alphonso mango season may be late this year. Here's a link to a site about when the USA is expecting them.

the photo stylist buys them by bunches or boxes wholesale or from their own source supplies and they or their assistant carefully wash them, sort out the best looking sprigs and cut and trim with manicure scissors and place them with tweezers on the plate

Caramelised banana - chinese dessert
A very long time ago, I had caramel fried apples at Peking Garden/ Jardin de Pékin 5339, Chemin Queen-Mary Montreal, QC H3X 1T9 (514) 484-9139. If they still make the caramel fried apples then they may make the banana version. When I had it, they brought out a bowl of ice water, and dropped the fried fruit dipped in hard syrup into the ice water so you got a hard coating and then the waiter drained the wedges and served it on a small plate. If they still make it, I'm not sure if it's still done this way at the tableside. This version of carmel fruit seems to be a Beijing style.

Top Quality Japanese/Korean Silken Tofu, Where Art Thou?!?
Just in case you want to try to make it yourselves... a long-ago neighbour of my mother's used to make her own silken tofu and she used to give us some everytime she made it. I don't have that recipe but here are some helpful links. However, you'll have to research yourself on where to get GDL in Montreal. I'm not sure if you can get away with using the organic natural flavoured soy milk from the supermarket or not; my mom's neighbour used dried soy beans that she cooked herself and ground up in a blender. PS. the pandan leaves are a regional ingredient, I don't believe my mom's friend used it.

Passion fruit puree or paste
I usually buy it at Akhavan on Sherbrooke W in NDG, but at this moment they are out of stock. I usually have to buy 4 packages at a time for my freezer since they're always running out.
coconut extract
If you're near a Caribbean grocer, they usually carry coconut extract, but it's usually an artifical extract. I have occasionally seen it at Persian grocery stores like Akhavan
Colmans dry mustard
I have found the dry mustard at Hogg's hardware store on Sherbrooke W at Victoria in Westmount if you live in the west end of montreal. They carry some UK food products and teas besides hardware.

I buy quite a bit of my spices and herbs at a bulk spice store called Anatol's near Milano Supermarket on St. Laurent.

Passing of Mila Oh (aka moh)
Thx Carswell for setting up this thread.
I'll miss reading her thoughts on food and restaurants and everytime I eat an alphonso mango, I'll think sweetly and fondly of her.

Lump crab meat in montreal
I don't know what the restaurants or anybody else have been doing, but I've been boiling and shelling blue crabs at home to make crab cakes.
Trouble with Candied Fruit
One factor could be the altitude you're at, if you live in Denver, your boiling point will be different than in New York City. A second factor could be your stove, gas is sligtly easier to control to get to a bare simmer stage. If you have problems with getting the dial just right, you may want to try using a heat diffuser which is a hollow metal pad with perforations which people used to use to keep their coffee pots warm on the stove without it getting too hot and burnt.
Alphonso mangoes
Lovely Moh, thx for letting us know. I haven't been out hunting for them since I'm sidetracked with tennis elbow. I'll try and get a friend to drive me to Marche V/O and hope they have a box left from yesterday.
Looking for simple screw-top lid jam jars
I haven't seen the simple one piece lid jars very often but I have seen them on occasion. I got mine from a friend who bought them in the Townships for me. I mostly use the 2 piece lid system from Golden Harvest which ia available from Canadian Tire next to the more expensive Bernadin jars. I've found that it's not necessary to flip the jars upside down. I use the same method you use for canning and I found the only time a jar may go off is if a drop of jam gets on the edge of the jar before lidding which affects the seal, so I wipe the glass edge with boiled water on paper towel before lidding and I heat my jars to 250 degree so they stay very hot before I lid them.
Hakka Restaurants in Montreal?
Nonya is 'Straits Chinese' or Overseas Chinese cuisine that would be considered a fusion cuisine of one of the Chinese cuisine, usually Fukien with whichever country the Chinese settled in the Indonesia-Malay-Singapore area. I figured that the Nonya style might be the closest in style to the Hakka-Indian style that we might have here in Montreal since I haven't come across any Hakka-Indian restaurants here. Some Chinese restaurants here might offer a Hakka dish or two on their menus, but I'm not sure how authentic it might be as I've only met one Hakka in Montreal and that was only in passing in an office.

Hakka Restaurants in Montreal?
Here's something from wiki in re: Hakka cuisine:
Regional Variations
In places such as India, and other places of Indian diaspora overseas, Hakka Cuisine is erroneously known as something that bears little to no resemblance to actual traditional Hakka dishes. This variation of "Hakka Cuisine" is in reality, mostly Indian Chinese cuisine, falsely known as Hakka since many Chinese restaurant owners in India were of Hakka origin. Typical dishes include Chilli Chicken and Manchurian Chow Mein (which in turn has no resemblance to real Manchurian cuisine), and these restaurants also serve traditional Indian dishes such as Pakora. Being immensely popular in these regions, this style of cuisine is often falsely credited of being representative of Hakka Cuisine in general and authentic style of Hakka Cuisine is rarely known in these areas.

The closest thing I can think of is Nyonya food of which there is Nonya restaurant.

Zeppole Time
Thx Regina... I was wondering what Italian Easter goodies were available here. That Las Pastiera sounds interesting.
Strange fruit?
Soon, there'll be Alphonso and Kesar mangoes at the Indian markets, later this summer there'll be Korean melons at the Korean markets, you missed the Hami melons, fresh Jackfruit is hard to find but the canned jackfruit can be interesting as part of a fruit salad, you still might find some blood oranges around but I think they're all gone too, and ripe sapodillas and persimmons would be good to try on them but beware of unripe ones as the astringent pucker would put them off the fruit.
Duck Legs - Where to find?
If you're not picky... the Provigo and Loblaws in the West End usually have them, the standard Lac Brome duck whole and parts.

Of all the stores that sell bbq duck in Chinatown, which one is the tastiest?
That shop is Dobe & Andy's BBQ meat outlet. I believe most people think Sun Sing Lung is the best of the bbq ducks from shops in Chinatown. Dobe & Andy's is good but not as good as Sun Sing Lung, but their duck is less expensive than SSL.
Zeppole Time
yes.. it's almost Alphonso and Kesar time and the hunt begins anew. Just a few more weeks till they should arrive.
