soggy v belly pain-y. spare me from my bok choi preparing self

it seems that all i know how to do with bok choi is 1) high heat --> yummy leaves, inadequately cooked stems, and belly pain; or 2) separate stems/leaves, some water in the pan --> stemmy sog. please help. what do you do that's simple, delicious and not a textural disaster? thanks.

Infant-friendly chow in West Village?

my infant was not that portable as a 9 month old, and the place i found most straightforward to navigate was chelsea market. the 14th st subway has elevators, so you can schlepp around a stroller; the green table (which serves good local, seasonal fare) has a large table outside the restaurant, where you can engage a potentially disruptive baby without disrupting others.

Any recs for a decent grind & brew that won't break?

brilliant picture. yes, that's exactly the problem with that coffee maker. (and the jet engine cacophony of the grinder).

Best Yet Market?

There's a Best Yet Market coming to my neighborhood (Harlem, NYC). From their website, they seem to be a NY state chain. If they have fresh produce that's reasonably priced, they will supplement the overpriced health food and organicky places to indeed be the best yet. Any word on what they're like? Any reason for hope?

That's fantastic news, thanks.

i agree. insanely moist, chewy flavorful foccacia.

it's a great list. the biggest omission (which i also omitted above) is the awesome old school italian shop rafetto's. though i prefer the arthur ave places, their fresh pastas, cut to order on an old school clangy pasta cutting machine, are fantastic.

olive oil

given that this thread has been resurrected, i will update this to say that alas, the stonehouse locations in nyc have closed. you can still mail order.

Newbie to the village...

as far as shops for great snacks (rather than shops for ingredients per se) there's amy's bread (i love the sourdough breadsticks with dark chocolate chips), murray's cheese, cones (people love their gelato, but i find it too sweet), grom (i much prefer their gelato, but it's not cheap). there are a bunch of well-regarded meat vendors i know nothing about. and there's the (expensive) blue ribbon bakery shop, with really delicious bread and exquisite honey.

Lower central park, cheap, good restaurants?

no it's not...it's at 59th st and 8th ave.

Lower central park, cheap, good restaurants?

la bonne soupe or wu liang ye might fit the bill. otherwise your best bet is to expand your geographic parameters a bit and consider hell's kitchen options.

family needs local places to eat

i would recommend saigon over paris, and second the amy ruth's recommendation over sylvia's.

i haven't kept up on the koreatown threads, but there are many good options there. you may want to do a search for both "K town" or "K-town" as well as Koreatown.

enjoy!

bake me a cake as fast as you can

yes, exactly, thank you! it looks and sounds delicious. but alas, beating egg whites until soft peaks form and cutting parchment paper rounds is so not going to happen...maybe for her 15th birthday :)

pregnant fondue?

yes, i agree. provided it's not a surprise, you could just ask your friend her comfort level with a tiny smidge of cooked off alcohol. you can get orange-y flavor by adding orange zest, but you won't get the same flavor/depth as if you added the liquor. that being said, i'm not sure the alcohol is as essential to the flavor of chocolate fondue as it is for cheese.

i would love a recipe for a really simple and delicious peach cobbler, thanks.

it's also a great idea to sub peaches for the sour cherries. i recall, back in the day when everyone was baking the galleygirl and sir gawain cakes fast and furious, that there was some discussion about one or the other being better for different fruits. given the cognitive decline that comes with parenting a one year old, i don't remember anything more than that. can someone refresh my memory?

Chowhound Post

bake me a cake as fast as you can

And remind me...There's a rose watery epicurious cake, a ground hazelnut cake from Goin's SSaL, and the famous Sir Gawain cake all circulating around in the back of my head. Those might be possibilities--any thoughts on those?

Chowhound Post

bake me a cake as fast as you can

my baby is turning one. don't get me started on just how fast time passes.

i want to make a cake, but it needs to be something she can eat. that means my go-to cake, the delicious galleygirl tart with sour cherries (http://chowhound.chow.com/topics/281699) is out, since she's never had sour cherries before, and i'm not so sure she'd be a fan.

the general rules:
no choking hazards (that eliminates carrot cake, because who wants to eat carrot cake without walnuts? not me. but carrot cake would probably otherwise be ideal)
no honey
no chocolate
not too fussy (i want to spend time with the girl way more than i want to make an elaborate cake for her)
no citrus
ideally would incorporate peaches, since they're so great these days, and she's a big fan

oh, and no need for cutesy shapes, lots of icing, etc--she won't know the difference. i anticipate making her her own cupcake-sized individual portion to pulverize, and a larger cake for the adults.

any tried and true recipes you'd recommend, or old chowhound threads you've bookmarked would be much appreciated.

thanks!

Time to find a new go to cookbook. Looking for suggestions.

i love sunday suppers at lucques. i have learned a lot about cooking from her recipes and approach, and just about everything i've made has been fantastic. you can check out the old home cooking board threads about the book (it was used as a cookbook of the month); i'm not the only one who loves it. and though many recipes are time intensive, not all of them are.
i also really like vegetarian cooking for everyone. but the labor to deliciousness ratio is not quite as good as lucques (with some more labor, and much more deliciousness).

Affordable Veggie friendly dinner tonight near Radio City?

http://www.labonnesoupe.com/ has fondue and good salads but unfortunately they're closed for renovation.

i love the salads and eggplant skewers at yakitori totto, but each little $2 thing adds up pretty quickly.

wu liang ye doesn't have a ton of vegetarian options, but the pea shoots are fantastic.

One night stand.

they're always quite full, so either they're getting praise somewhere, or the crowds beget more crowds.

to make an analogy to my current life, which is more about infant than chow, it's like the baby bjorn baby carrier--they kill your back, and there are such better options out there, but everybody seems to have them, so everybody goes out and gets them.

Bronx recs: Up for a (cheap) adventure?

stopped in today to the new place across the street (but didn't check out the address, sorry rolise). it was bustling with an entirely asian (and oddly, entirely male) clientele. i'm not sure it's related to the old place--i didn't see any familiar faces among the staff there, and the pho is quite different. at the old place, the standard pho was served with thinly sliced beef and odd chewy dense meatballs; here, it was served with no meatballs, but with beef tripe, tendon, and other unfamiliar-to-this-ambivalent-carnivore-cuts. the broth, like the old place, was fantastic.

at the old world of taste, there were signs up for fried fish and other fried foods. is that, and not african foods, how her menu is changing?

i have to dissent on veniero's. when i lived in the neighborhood, i never had anything there that wasn't insipid at best. unless they've dramatically improved recently, i'd avoid.
