ISO: Popchips in Toronto

I bought some a few months ago at the Avenue Rd. & Lawrence location... I tried the salt & vinegar and the plain salted - the salt & vinegar were not very good. I had tried a similar product from Trader Joe's that were far superior to popchips, however... Sadly we have no TJs here:(

Unique cake design

Linda Morganstern of Once Upon a Cake could do one for you I am sure. She made a beautiful wedding cake for me - a close to exact replica of one I found on the cover of a Martha Stewart Wedding magazine that I fell in love with.

Report: Mildred's Temple Kitchen

DH and I dined there last week for a birthday celebration. While I like the modern decor, I can see how one might feel they are dining in a cafeteria setting - albeit a very nice cafeteria.

I thought the menu was somewhat interesting, but I do hope they lighten things up a little for spring. Both of us started with the onion/bread soup - which I am guessing is their take on French Onion soup with croutons and cheese (Asiago) in the bowl when it arrives and the broth poured over top from a kettle. The soup was quite flavourful and I did enjoy my first several spoonfuls, but it was extremely salty and wasn't quite as enjoyable near the end. I also found the broth to be oily which I was surprised at.

For mains, DH had the burger which he enjoyed. I don't think he had the same issue as Jacquilynne regarding the toppings, but that is probably because he tends to take most of them off before eating it! While the fries were good, he commented that they were also oversalted. I had a venison special with sweatbreads and gnocchi. I really enjoyed it. The venison was cooked perfectly and the sweetbreads nice and crisp, but again, it was too salty. And I like my food to be well-salted, so there had to be a ton of salt.

For dessert I had the lemon millefeuille as I wanted something light and that might cut the saltiness of the meal. I wasn't as enamoured of it as Jacquilynne - I found the lemon layers had an odd texture and after a couple bites tasted as if they had congealed in the refrigerator too long, and I didn't think the mascarpone quenelle on top added anything to it either.

I do hope that the people at MTK read this and address the salt issue (unless it was just an off night). I would definitely give it another chance, because the food was, in general, well executed.

March Break Lunch Quest - under $10, awesome soup or salad

Yes, they are (their web-site indicates they are only open Saturdays on the weekend but I think that has changed). They also have a sign out front that they are open for breakfast now too (maybe only on the weekend, and I have no idea what they serve). I don't believe that they serve the falafel sandwich in the evening, however. But the soup is definitely available.

You can see their menu at www.mashumashu.ca

March Break Lunch Quest - under $10, awesome soup or salad

For about $9 plus tax and tip (slightly over your budget) you could have a great bowl of lentil soup and a falafel sandwich filled with beets & tabouleh (you need to specify what you want in your sandwich if you want more than the standard veg) at Mashu Mashu on Spadina (St. Clair West station, exit on Tichester).

Desperately seeking Boddies

I am not certain, but I think I saw a banner outside McSorley's on Bayview advertising Boddngton's. You could call ahead and ask to be sure...

Excellent brunch at School Bakery & Cafe

Excellent - will have to check it out soon. Thx again!

Excellent brunch at School Bakery & Cafe

Sounds great - thx for the review! Is the restaurant kid-friendly? i.e. accomodating of toddlers and/or infants in car seats

Scaramouche Lobsterlicious - Any reports?

Thanks!
You could defnitely taste the bacon flavour in the butter sauce, but it wasn't overwhelming.
Yours sounds like good choices to me - enjoy!

Scaramouche Lobsterlicious - Any reports?

Sorry I did not have a chance to report back... a qucik review:
We ate in the pasta bar. Service was friendly and efficient. We were informed that we could either order entirely from the Lobsterlicious menu or we could get the same dishes a la carte. We opted for the full on lobster experience. I started with the shrimp salad which was light and refreshing. My DC had the scallop risotto which she also found quite nice. For mains, I had the butter poached lobster which while not terribly exciting, was cooked well and was not overly rich. The portion was also quite large. My DC had the grilled lobster which she also enjoyed. As it was a sort of "business dinner" we did not have too much time to discuss the merits of the meal, and I didn't really evaluate it to any great extent. I can say that for $52pp it was a fantastic deal. We both opted for the hazelnut parfait for dessert which was good as well. I am always a sucker for the coconut cream pie and now that Joanne Yolles is back, I would have loved to try it (should have??), but I was so full from dinner that I opted for the parfait... Next time for sure!

Scaramouche Lobsterlicious - Any reports?

Going tonite and wondering if anyone has any reports of their experience and/pr recommendations? Already read the review from the National Post. TIA!

Eggstacy on Bay is Toast..

That's totally strange - when I walked by a couple times yesterday between 11am-1pm it was lined up out the door! I wonder what kind of offer they were made. Anyone??

Truffles in boxes for just two?

When I bought chocolates there in the summer, Xococava had boxes for only 2 truffles.

The Best of Toronto (article)

Are you sure you are not thinking of House of Chan, on the other side of Eglinton closer to Bathurst?

very odd request - but food related to ontario -- where can i get a starbucks apron?

I have no clue where you could buy one locally, but you can try eBay.

Decent quality bittersweet chocolate

Also saw lots of the PC Bittersweet bars at Loblaws Forest Hill Market this morning.

great take-out on Mt Pleasant, Bayview, Leaside? (Toronto)

I agree. The curry chicken salad is tasty (but may have a bit too much mayo for some) and the lamb which normally comes on a fig bread is also quite good.

where to buy a decent pita

I third Sababa. For whatever reason, whenever I buy pita there it's always warm and fresh (and I don't always go on the weekend). I am partial to their "sesame" pita which is just a white pita coated with sesame seeds - sooooo good!

walking distance from dupont station.

For a bit of a nicer meal you could try Le Paradis on Bedford, just south of Dupont. They are open Tues-Fri for lunch.

Late Night Omelet

You can try Victoria Restaurant at Queen & Victoria (across from St. Mike's). Not sure how great the omelette is, but it's a decent diner and I am pretty sure it's open 24 hours (closed on Sunday).

Ice cream stuff that's unavailable in Montreal

Also highly recommend Il Gelatiere - best gelato I've had in TO. I like the flavours at Tropical Treets but when I bought a cone from the factory the ice cream was quite crystalized.

On a separate note, have you tried the ice cream (soft serve or otherwise) at Chocomax on Decarie? I haven't tried the soft serve but the other flavours are quite good albeit a little sweet.

Two pub questions...

Haven't been to Toby's, but have been to Wylies a few times. It's not too bad for a pub - I wouldn't call it sketchy, but definitely not above average. They have a really big typical pub menu with a large selection of Indian and Thai dishes as well. While I didn't enjoy their gloopy ketchupy pad thai very much, the Indian curry I had was not bad - chicken of some sort - can't recall which. I think I had the French dip once as well - it was average. My husband always has the burger which he says is ok - I am pretty sure they use frozen fries tho.

Not that bad: Chapman's Frozen Yogourt line.

I have been eating Chapman's regular line of fro-yo for years. I am addicted to the Cappuccino flavour - there are bits of ground coffee in the chocolate chunks. I recently tried the other 2 flavours of the probiotic (almond something and the pear with caramel) and I didn't particularly care for either. The almond was way too sweet, and there was something about the pear that just didn't taste right. I was sick that week so maybe my tastebuds were off - I will have to try the other flavours now... From the regular line, I do like the new mint choc chip flavour, and the pecan crunch and maple walnut aren't bad either.

Chocolate pecan pie in Toronto

Pusateri's has one which is quite good.

Passover Bagels

What-a-Bagel on Spadina (in Forest Hill Village) makes them (and I think the location of Bathurst near Wilson has them too). Not sure about the other locations - but you can call and ask...

Bagle World

In short, yes. I am sure you will elicit many responses about the merit of the Bagel World bagel vs. for example, the Montreal bagel, or a New York bagel. But I don't think the bagels at Bagel World have changed in the past 15 years, so if you liked them then, you will like them now. I prefer the Kiva's bagel myself (if only because they make an extra seeded bagel, and Bagel World does not).

Your inexpensive, Unusual locations to "Grab A Bite"?

I used to pick up a roti from Albert's when I was in need of a quick, easy fill-up... but my new favourite in the area (Bathurst & St. Clair) is Eastern Twist. I have only tried their wraps, but I believe the make the Paratha wrap (white or whole wheat) themselves and the fillings are pretty tasty too - $6-$9 depending on the filling. And if you like spicy, make sure you add the achar as a topping! It's fast food style, but there are tables.

Blue Menu New Products - What have you tried?

Hubby and I tried the pizza - it was ok considering the low price, but we were were still hungry and found it a little lacking in flavour.

DH is still a kid at heart and talked me into the chicken fingers - not terribly flavourful, but a good low fat alternative if that's what you like. Just add some dipping sauce (aka ketchup/sweet mustard for DH, Memories of Thailand for me).

Also tried the frozen wild salmon (skin on) which was good - just frozen salmon filets which you season yourself so it would be hard to go wrong. Very convenient to have on hand, but I think you are paying for convenience at $9.99 for 2 filets. (Altho I could have sworn when I bought them the sign said $6.99 but when I looked at my bill later it was not so...)

Queen St. Fire

Yes, apparently it was, according to the following article:

http://www.citynews.ca/news/news_19795.aspx

I am not sure if the list is exhaustive.

Terrible :-(

Best Brunch -- Yonge & Eglinton Edition

Last time we went to C-Food it was pretty decent. For $15 you get a choice of 3 menu items (several sweet/savory/side options) plus juice and coffee. I was skeptical but it was actually quite tasty. Good yogurt parfait, fries, omelette, banana bread french toast... We thought the portions would be small, but we were all quite full and barely managed to finish our plates (I was pregnant at the time and had an insatiable appetite...)!
