Dovetail or Picholine?

Why do you think you're getting that question so often? Just because you're dining alone? Although I would think that a pro looking to dine incognito would take someone with them, just for that reason.

Who makes the best bone marrow ?

Did you mean St John, in London? Yes, a lovely bone marrow dish, with parsley salad. Closer to home, I had a good bone marrow dish at a simple bistro on the upper west side that I cant remember the name of......real helpful, I know. I though it was French Roast, but I just looked at their menu and no bone marrow....maybe they took it off.

Blood sausage in NYC?

Wow, that's a process. After you've simmered and refrigerated them can you saute them without having them burst? I find that tends to happen with store bought boudin.

Blood sausage in NYC?

Home made boudin noir? That IS ambitious! Would you share the recipe?

Let me add to the list of joints serving it Chez Josephine on 42nd. Havent had it for ages but just checked the menu and it's still there. Must try the Morcilla at Despana; obviously it gets raves.

Keens dilemma - Mutton Chop or Steak?

Just the mere mention of Keen's "mutton" chop has me salivating. Dont give it a second thought.

A sophisticated bar on the Upper West Side?

Thanks all.

Went to Lincoln which is very nice but difficult, due to the seating arrangement, for more than two people to chat easily. Nice place though.

Unfortunately Per Se is closed for a winter break. Would have liked to have gone there.

A sophisticated bar on the Upper West Side?

The Salon sounds nice, but there's precious little information at the website. None, in fact.

Are reservations required, or just arrive and be seated? Must one order food, or is it mainly a bar?

Thanks again

A sophisticated bar on the Upper West Side?

Are there any? There are plenty of joints, but is there a nice, quiet-ish, club-y kind of place anywhere? How's the bar at 'Cessca? Or Picholine? How about the new place in the Cafe Des Artistes' space?

Thanks in advance

Birthday for 10-15 young adults this Saturday UWS

No no, not at all. I dont know why I put that in, it was misleading wasnt it?, but if you do know of another Ethiopian place, so much the better! The price range certainly fits.

Thanks

Birthday for 10-15 young adults this Saturday UWS

Hi:

My daughter just asked me to suggest some place (her favorite Ethiopian joint is closed for renovations) where 10-15 people might have a swell time this Saturday night. UWS preferred, it seems, but since the Ethiopian joint is at 47th, I would widen the search a bit to anywhere on the west side above, say 42nd, but UWS even better. Not too pricey; the back room at 'Cesca probably isnt the place ;-)

My daughter likes to wait until the last (almost) second.

Thanks all.

Where to buy foie gras (goose)?

Just found this.....

http://www.blackstargourmet.com/Fresh-Goose-Foie-Gras_c_218.html

It's kind of sketchy on details (no pics or prices) but they claim to have it. Worth contacting them I would say. Let us know.

Killer lamb dishes?

Same cut as Keen's? The "double sided" (so to speak) loin chop? How does it compare?

Shake Shack UWS

I read the article - thanks for the link - but it's really hard to figure out why anyone who has this to say......

"There's nothing special about the burger—regular squishy bun, a 1/4-pound patty of griddled meat, lettuce, tomato, and sauce...'

.......would then spend considerable time trying to recreate it. But that's just me.....lol.

Shake Shack UWS

So then kathryn, you're saying no rib meat in there?

Shake Shack UWS

I live right around the corner from the UWS location, and I'm a fan of Danny Myers in general, but if there's one thing I wont do it's line up for 20-30 minutes for food. I would stare in disbelief at the 45 minute lines in Madison Square Park (the lines on the UWS are shorter but still hefty at times) and wonder if it were possible that a humble hamburger could possibly be worth it. I mean, it's right there, in the palm of my hand…. I wanted it to be; I needed it to be!

So, the other night I come home late and hungry, and see no line at Shake Shack. This is it! Tonight's the night, this is gonna be……..oh, really disappointing :-(

I ordered the basic Shack burger; specialty of the house, right? The best thing they've got. I didn't eat in, but I live literally 50 paces away, so the trip home can hardly be blamed for the incredibly soggy bun surrounding the ok burger with the McDonald's-like special sauce, accompanied by the barely warm fries. Now, none of this is surprising in a fast food joint, and the price is fine, but I guess I'd bought into the mystique and was hoping for something sublime. The fries have the potential to be very good, and I know others have said that if you wait for a fresh batch they'll be nice and hot, but really, I should't have to, should I? The burger itself is entirely average. If there's anything "proprietary" about the blend of meat it isn't apparent in the taste, and if it were it would probably be drowned out by the sauce, which by the way, is just fine, but it's a bit like ordering a screwdriver made with Grey Goose. Can you tell, at that point? (Perhaps it's different it if you get just the hamburger.) And that bun! How on earth did it get so soggy so fast?

Am I being too hard on the place? Probably, but I fell for it. You want a burger and fries with special sauce? Go ahead, it'll be ok, but if the lines are long it wont be fast. On the plus side, at least you can get wine or beer with it. At McDonald's it's still BYOB.

Dinner on Saturday Night for 3 Guys

Know, however, that this place doesnt take credit cards, last time I looked, anyway. Doubtless someone will correct me if I'm wrong.

Looks like none of this maters anyway, since you posted last Friday and I guess you were talking about the next day.

Rentable rooftop venue

Anyone know of a nice rent-able rooftop party space, or one so large that 15-20 people could have a party in the corner without disrupting the other business going on? I think rent-able is better.

Thanks

Where in Manhattan to buy casual dinnerware

Not sure what you mean by casual, but I got some nice stuff down on the Bowery. There are a bunch of restaurant supply stores there (dont remember the names) and I got some nice hefty (masculine?) stuff at a really good price.

Looking for British Chocolate near Union Square/flatiron

I think the village is where you have to go. I assume you are referring to Meyers of Keswick, 634 Hudson Street http://myersofkeswick.computerperfect.com/ a favourite among us ex-pats. There's also Tea & Sympathy but I dont know much about that place. I think it's more of a restaurant then retail. Union Square is barely a ten minute walk away anyhow, if that. God good man! Put on your Wellies and get on with it ;-)

Mutton

I had wondered about that. What about Pakistani, as PCherches suggests?

Mutton

Just found this though. http://gotham2go.com/index.php/20/7/177 or http://tinyurl.com/yjptwmb

In a curry though, I'm not sure you'd taste much difference. What you want is a nice roasted leg, the kind me muvver used to make. That, is going to be a tall order unless you cook it yourself.

Mutton

If you want to prepare it yourself, rumor has it that you can buy it here http://www.dairysheepfarm.com/ (they're at the Union Square Greenmarket ) although I dont see it on the website.

As for a restaurant, you'd think that there would have to be some well hidden ethnic joint serving it somewhere but I havent found it yet. Sorry. Guts may well be correct.

Absinthe paraphernalia

Not so pricey I wouldnt say. Looks very nice. Thanks for the info.

On display? Not for use? Well I suppose you have to be careful with that stuff or you'll wind up missing an ear!

Where can i find sausage casings?

You might want to call this place, http://www.salumeriabiellese.com/ I know it's not exactly an answer, but if they dont sell them they must know who does. Esposito's (http://www.espositosausage.com/) would be another place; basically, anywhere where they make a ton of sausage ;-) Also, dont underestimate your friendly neighborhood butcher. They make sausage at Citarella (dont they?) and I cant imagine why they wouldnt sell you casings.

Let us know how the sausage making adventure turns out. I tried it many years ago, but was never really pleased with the results.

News on Trader Joe's on UWS?

Thanks for the update. Looking forward to it.

St. Patrick's Day bars open 7am??

I would think that at 6 or 7 am most of the Irish bars havent even closed yet. ;-)

St Patricks Day UWS recs please!

Of course, of course. I trust you realize my tongue was firmly planted in my cheek as I was typing, and I myself love to serve up corned beef and cabbage on St Patrick's day, along with some Irish cheeses, a little (no, a lot of) smoked salmon, various sausages, and a bathtub full of Guinness..... or Jameson's.

Sorry I couldnt steer you to the greatest corned beef on the upper west side. Let us know if you find it.

G.

St Patricks Day UWS recs please!

Not to discourage you - I love a good plate of corned beef and cabbage as much as the next guy; who wouldnt? - but you know they eat about as much corned beef and cabbage in Ireland as they do French toast in France, right? ;-) Take a look....

http://www.europeancuisines.com/Why-We-Have-No-Corned-Beef-Recipes

(Well actually they do eat french toast in France, but they call it "pain perdu" and they didnt invent it, but I digress.)

It would certainly be bad form to make a post like that with out a suggestion (!) and as it happens there is no shortage of Irish joints on the upper west, none of which I have any personal knowledge of. Helpful, right? But here's a list I found....

http://nymag.com/srch?t=bar&N=259+98+1321&No=0

I saw a good review of P.D. O'Hurley's Pub & Restaurant http://www.pdohurleys.com/menu.htm and maybe others will chime in. There's no Irish stew or colcannon on the menu, (although there is bangers and mash and shepherd's pie; kinda Irish) but maybe they do it up on St. Patrick's Day. One would hope ;-)

Which fountain did you buy?

News on Trader Joe's on UWS?

Having grilled my source extensively (!) it would seem that it could well be old news she's talking about. As you were, false alarm (I hope).
