Where to eat near Downtown Vancouver?
This is not valid on Valentine's day but it is a good deal. Don't know if your dinner "has" to be Valentines or not. It is a good deal though and makes it in your price range. http://www.travelzoo.com/ca/local-deals/Vancouver/Restaurant/11435
Barcelona - 41 Degrees and Tickets in the same evening?
I look forward to your write up!
Barcelona - 41 Degrees and Tickets in the same evening?
Yes, I got my reservation. :-) Price is 141 euros per person not including, tax or drinks.
Hot Chocolate & Churros - Barcelona
Would anyone be able to offer advice on a good place for hot chocolate and churros near our hotel? Good breakfast spots I'd also be interested in. Preferably easy to walk to. We're staying at Barcelona Universal @ Avinguda Paral.lel, 76-78, Ciutat Vella, 08001. Thank you in advance.
Barcelona - 41 Degrees and Tickets in the same evening?
Just fyi...my reservation is in late November at Tickets. I was trying to change my ressie from Tickets to 41º as I will be going to Tickets on a different ressie now, joining others. I received the response in quotes below as the answer to my question.
"We cant change the reservation because 41º after the 20th of october change the concept of the restaurant.
You´ll see all the information in our website."
Nothing on their website yet and I see no reservations open for after October 20th either. I'm curious to what the concept change is!
Araxi long table dinner @ North Arm Farm - July 30th, 2011
Mmmmm, those zucchini flowers sound delicious as does the beef! Sounds like a great meal! Did you have a favourite course?
Documentary tomorrow night about Vancouver chefs
I got turned back going to Whistler today because of an accident on Hwy99 and forfeited my first pre-paid night at a hotel there. So...I got home in time to watch it...
And, yeah, I fell asleep twenty minutes in. Tried to re-watch it when I woke up and the hour felt like three. I laughed at how fmed was right. Crap! Utter crap. :-(
Documentary tomorrow night about Vancouver chefs
I have never seen a show on food/culture/chefs in Vancouver, ever. I'm really looking forward to seeing it whether it's "fluff" or not.

Thank you for this. I have set the PVR and am sure it will be worthwhile watching.
diner breakfast at Laura's in Vancouver
LR: What about Cambie Café? 2301 Cambie St. It's as greasy and divey as Chinese-Canadian greasy spoon can get! Wife is the waitress, husband is the cook. I've stopped eating eggs :-( but I used to go there often for the $3.50 breakfast and $1.25 coffee all the time for that experience you describe. However, the Chinese food - not so much. ;-)
Coming Soon ... Good Ramen Near BC PLACE Hopefully
Thank you for the info. This will be next on my list. I had this really thick broth in Honolulu in Feb. called Kotteri (chicken). It was as thick as gravy. For myself, I like broths not so thick.
I have to try every ramen place we have here and I like complex broths so I appreciate your report.
Vancouver without a car
My fave ramen is Santouka downtown on Robson st.
In Kits, I like the burgers at Romer's but I do know it gets some mixed opinions here, but I like them. Here's the one I had last week - the Man's Man Burger: Thick-sliced applewood bacon, local creamery amber ale cheddar, onion strings, smoked alder salts, vine-ripened tomato, whole grain mustard. It was really good.
Help! (Tomorrow) Outdoor Overlooking Water
Horizons is on Burnaby Mountain. Yes, the view is lovely from there. I haven't been there in so long, I can't comment about the food anymore.
Help! (Tomorrow) Outdoor Overlooking Water
el_lobo_solo is correct about views and food not going hand in hand here. However, Cardero's would fit your price range and it has a beautiful patio on the water. Food is about par with the chains like Milestones, Earls, Cactus Club, etc. but the patio is a beautiful setting in summer.

Make sure to ask for them hot out of the fryer, then. ;-)
Options for YVR layover?
If you do go to Salt I can tell you what I honestly think about the area. As a tourist, yes it would make me uncomfortable - all of Gastown would actually. Even in the day the beggars, addicts and "mentally unstable" are visible everywhere.
That being said, I don't avoid the area because of it, I just walk on by and ignore the blatant begging, tweakers, crack heads, etc. They generally will not bother you. I just don't engage them in any way.
Judas Goat is right beside Salt and offers tapas too. http://www.judasgoat.ca/#menu
There is a Guu in Gastown too. http://www.guu-izakaya.com/gastown/ (close to Waterfront station too).
Boneta in Gastown does some small plates. http://www.boneta.ca/
L'Abattoir in Gastown does some great small plates and drinks. http://www.labattoir.ca/
If you got off the Canada Line at Yaletown - Roundhouse station, you could hike up Davie St. to Mis Trucos which has gotten some good feedback on this board (I've never been). It's also open til 1am. http://mistrucos.ca/ You can google map it and see it's walkable for you. Bin941 on Davie St. too. http://bin941.com/
Quick Help Please - at the Hyatt Regency, want Chinese seafood...
I'm sure it's fine. I've only heard of people eating at Imperial for dim sum so I don't have any dinner knowledge other than I know it's expensive. But Kirin is pricey too, I wouldn't call it cheap.
Quick Help Please - at the Hyatt Regency, want Chinese seafood...
I haven't been to Imperial so can't help you there. But, I have been to Kirin and it's walking distance from your hotel. It's good.

YEW restaurant @ Four Seasons brunch thoughts...
First off, I had a voucher that gave two of us a 3 course brunch for $30. Regular price is $54 for two and it would have been worth it at that price! I like the ambiance of the restaurant - high, high ceilings. It was very comfortable and they had the blinds right so that sun wasn't shining in and blinding you.
Service was excellent. Our waiter paced the brunch perfectly and knew the menu well. He made several suggestions and answered any questions knowledgeably. Food was cooked properly and was presented nicely. I ordered three Kushi oysters as an extra and they were $1.75 each. If I had chose them as my first course I would have got six. My Nicoise salad was slightly under dressed but the grilled haricot vert were delicious! Double Caesar with prawn was $10 and was very good with fresh horseradish in it.
I found this brunch to have great value and I will return! None of the food was mind blowing but it was perfectly satisfactory. The experience as a whole was worthwhile. The bar is attractive too. Here are the photos:
1. Amuse of mini donuts with raspberry-orange dipping sauce and they will bring you more if you want more (as good as the PNE ones)
2. Waffles with Dark Chocolate & Orange
3. Kushi oysters served with a soy vinaigrette & horseradish
4. Crab Fritters with Cilantro, Ginger & Spicy Aioli
5. Westcoast Benedict - Dungeness Crab Cake, Wilted Spinach, Hollandaise
6. Tuna Nicoise - Seared Ahi Tuna, Miso Dressing, Six Minute Egg, Green Beans, Black Olives & Dried Tomato
7. Americano with Biscotti - $5
8. Parfait w/Vanilla & ?, - Chocolate tart with hazelnuts and caramel, - Creme Brulee with Tahitian Vanilla, Pineapple Compote
9. Espresso Caramel, Pot De Crème, - Chocolate tart with hazelnuts and caramel, - Fruit Consommé, Mango Ravioli

Maybe it was the Groupon??
I would just tell them you've heard their brunches take a long time and you don't have a long period of time to spend at the restaurant. Don't "not" use your Groupon solo because of my experience, yours may be better....I would just let them know you don't want to be there all afternoon. :-) Let us know how you make out...
Peking Duck for a special occasion?
Kirin on Alberni St. downtown has 2 course Peking Duck.

Spicy Court for Dim Sum
Four of us just had lunch there again yesterday. Glad we made a reservation as it was packed, though the host didn't understand the English name we made the reservation under. :-) We had to flag them for service a few times, but they were busy and attended to us immediately once we got their attention. I really don't find it any different than any other BUSY dim sum restaurant for service.
They didn't remember that we drink Tiet Kwun Yum tea this time and brought us jasmine. They quickly rectified it though...we all mentioned we must not be coming enough anymore to be remembered. :-)
Date Night Suggestions?
lunchslut, I agree. When you pay $200 per person, it is more than just food. Personally, atmosphere/decor etc. doesn't matter to me. Neither has little effect on me except if it had blinding bright lights or something. But, service certainly does. Service can make or break a meal for me and often does. When you're paying that much, it's nice to feel special. Good service knows how to interpret what your table wants. Good service makes me like the food more. :-) I was just thinking about this as I mentioned "C Restaurant" in another post here.
Did you ever eat at Tojo's when it was where Kayan Mediterranean Cuisine is now? That room was much more intimate. Sorry your experience was so disappointing on your birthday!

Maybe it was the Groupon??
Oh, my son did not want the trout in his salad, so they did offer him a 24 hour slow cooked egg in its place and he did enjoy that. It just felt like it took 24 hours to arrive. :-)
Maybe it was the Groupon??
No, I didn't. I didn't, because... I already had embarrassed my son by something I said to the waitress earlier. (Long story and way off-topic here). I didn't want to make his brunch any worse than it was by what I had said already. :-) I ordered a glass of champagne too, and it was served warm. Yuck.
The food was good, though if I paid $40 x 2, I doubt I would have been happy. The fingerling potatoes were under cooked and tasted solely of vinegar. Here's what we had in order, with the pictures:
1. Amuse of corn muffins with chipotle mayo
2. Granola with Greek yogurt and melon (really good!)
3. Smoked Larry Albright Trout Salad - pink grapefruit, candied ginger, arugula, pumpkin seed dressing (loved this dish)
4. Eggs benny with prosciutto, fingerling potatoes and fresh fruit
5. Chocolate Chip Mint ice cream cones
Maybe it was the Groupon??
I did the Groupon brunch at the end of May. It took two and a half hours! We sat with really long stretches with nothing as well. No refills, etc. My son had to keep reminding me we didn't have to be anywhere and to quit stressing out. My eggs benny arrived and the yolks were hard as rock. I had to send it back and my son was finished his by the time mine came back.

Spicy Court for Dim Sum
I've never been for dinner. We usually do group dim sum lunches here. We've never had any problems with indifference or service. YMMV.
Spicy Court for Dim Sum
I love Spicy Court! I find it old school good, and we go often and have been for years. They make the best XO sauce of any dim sum place I've been to, to date.
