Trader Joe's Coming - Seaholm

They have the best peanut butter-filled pretzels. I go out of my way to visit stores on vacation so I can bring back pretzels and peppermint jojos. Obviously neither of these are staples of my diet, but I can't get anything like them elsewhere. It's also a good place for inexpensive animal- and eco-friendly home and personal care products.

Looking for places that have Pureed food - any help?

Sorry your son is dealing with this. I've had friends in the same situation, and it gets boring fast. Hummus and mashed potatoes are other dishes that thin out well.

Vegetarian friend coming to town

Go to La Condesa. You might call the day before to mention you're bringing a dairy-free, egg-free, mostly-meat free person so they'll have ingredients on hand. The chef there does an amazing vegan platter. It's different every time, but always really good.

Vegetarian friend coming to town

Can you give more information? Is vegetarian=picky? Or does she have a long list of foods she won't eat? Or is she just unadventurous?

Flat Top Burger Shop

The vegan burger is good, too. Firm, crispy, slightly on the dry side, and a touch spicy. The fries were the first fries I've had in Austin where I didn't feel the need to add salt. It is on the pricey side for counter service, but I think you get what you pay for ultimately.

Hard Hat Report Vol 8

This place STILL hasn't opened, but there's visible progress inside with setting up tables and so on.

Good place for lunch with vegan options, a full bar and something for a pescatarian?

Easy! Vivo has great vegan options and is just east of the University. Easy parking. Sagra has a vegan menu, though the prices are a bit high. Fairly creative drink specials. And Clay Pit. If you get the buffet, they can bring the vegan roti instead of naan. All three have full bars.

I'm pretty sure East Side Cafe doesn't have a full bar.

Great food with veggie options and music for couple in their 60's

I can't think of many veg-friendly places with live music either. But I avoid music...

The one that comes to mind is Threadgills. Their veg options are mostly limited to the sides, but they're well-known for their sides. Pharas has belly dancing (which isn't really music) on the weekends and good vegetarian options. It's BYOB. The Parlor pizza has live music and veg options, but it's pretty divey, the music is punk, and you order at the counter.

Hard Hat Report Vol 8

Not exactly new, but it looks like Daily Juice has finally split into two businesses. I've been hearing rumors about a split for a long time. The Barton Springs and Deep Eddy locations are now JuiceLand. The Hyde Park location is still Daily Juice, and their website says there will be two new locations under that name opening Fall 2011. Downtown and Westlake.

RIP part 4

Wild About Harry's on Burnet (hot dogs and custard) has an eviction notice on the door. It's been a hard summer for hot dogs in Austin.

Roll On Sushi on Burnet

I was there last night, too. They're new, so I'm not surprised that things are changing a lot. Just find it interesting.

Roll On Sushi on Burnet

We got the hippie roll and cholesta roll, too. My hippie roll was very different from yours though. It had pickled vegetables, shiso, asparagus, avocado, and slices of inari. No raspberry sauce. Looking at the menu online just now, it's fairly different from the menu posted in the restaurant.

We got the veggie tempura, too. It was great. The breading is really light. It definitely had shiso and pickled vegetables, but I'm not sure what else. It's not on their menu, but I hope they add it.

A few minor quibbles. It's a bit confusing the way the menu card is organized. I meant to order the hippie bowl and accidentally ordered the hippie roll. The menu on the wall runs from left to right, but the menu card you write on has the food in the opposite order. They don't have hot tea, just iced tea. It's also a bit awkward that the waitress has to squeeze in between you and your dining companions to deliver food and take away dishes. But none of this is enough to keep me from coming back.

Where can I find Polviho Azedo (sour tapioca flour) in or around Austin?

The West African market is gone, but there's also a Caribbean market on N. Lamar, just south of MT.

Locally Grown Potatoes Locally Grown Pinto Beans

There aren't beans grown anywhere near Austin. I know it makes no sense. The closest thing to beans we have is a small harvest of cow peas.

I've gotten potatoes in Austin, though I don't know if you could find them now. You might call the Sustainable Food Center. They'll know what's available.

What's going on at Sunflower?

We were in the area last night and peeked in the window. It looks like they're about to put in a new floor. Lots of boxes of tile.

new to austin- good chinese food or italian deli?

The closest thing to a good Jewish deli is the kosher deli in the Far West HEB. Being in a grocery store, it's lacking in ambiance. But my husband swears by their pastrami. Expect an expensive sandwich, though, since they're using kosher meat.

Dallas Chowhound Looking for the Best

Just a warning, the produce is a bit slim at the markets these days because of that big freeze a few weeks back. Though it sounds like you're mostly interested in value added products, which aren't affected as much.

Your favorite vegan dishes in Austin?

For Mexican/Tex-Mex, there are good vegan options at Curras, Gueros, Trudy's, Vivo, El Mercado.

Other places that appeal to vegans and non-vegans: Blackstar Coop, Sunflower, Somnio Cafe, anywhere Ethiopian, Steeping Room, anywhere Mediterranean (I like Pars Deli), Titaya's or Thai Passion.

If you want to do a food cart, I think Conscious Cravings is the best right now. The chimichurri wrap is wonderful, though you can also slip next door to the Salt Lick cart for barbecue. Chilantro is another good food cart that can please both camps.

And it's definitely worth a trip to Toy Joy for vegan milkshakes.

I would try an Indian grocery like MGM Indian Foods on Burnet.
