SF-Style Sourdough in Durham

Go to the Durham Farmers Market and try the whole wheat sourdough from Wild Scallions Farm. I like to call it the small loaf with big flavor.

Weinberg's The Deli opened in North Raleigh

Liver knish! I have never seen (growing up in Elmont and Oceanside NY and spending lots of time in Brooklyn) or even heard of that, but I would love to have one along with a tongue and chopped liver sandwich.

Best fried chicken in Durham and Chapel Hill NC

We were discussing various Durham and Chapel Hill restaurants at dinner tonight. Someone asked about where to get the best fried chicken. I recall having some really good fried chicken at Bullock's.

Who do you think has the best fried chicken in Durham and Chapel Hill?

Looking in the RDU Area for Bacala or Bacalao

You can also order salt cod (and excellent Portuguese linguica and chorizo) from Amaral's Lisbon Sausage in New Bedford MA. www.amarals.com The salt cod is under the "other local favorites" category.

Does anyone know how long this will keep in the refrigerator. I have a piece I keep forgetting to use. I think I bought it about 18 months ago.

Worst Bagels in Town would be more appropriate name.[Greensboro,NC]

The bagels in and around NYC have gone downhill over the past 25-35 years. They have lost their outer crustiness and are overinflated, squishy dough balls.

I would rather have a high quality 2-2.5 ounce bagel than a 4 ounce reshaping of wonder bread.

Where to find passionfruit [extract, purée, juice] in Triangle Area (NC)?

You can get frozen passionfruit pulp at Compare Foods in Durham. I know they have at least two brands at the big store on Avondale Drive - Goya and at least one other brand. I have used the Goya because the first time I bought it many of the packages of the other brand were very sticky on the outside. Warning - Some packages leak when defrosted, so put the package in a plastic bag or a dish when you are defrosting it.

They may also have it at the smaller store on University Drive (Forest Hills shopping center), but I have not looked for it there.

A very popular dessert in Brasil is mousse de maracuja - passionfruit mousse. This is super easy to make. I would be happy to share the recipe if you are interested.

I went to Streets Deli in Chapel Hill on Saturday and sadly found they had closed. There is now an explanation on their website at http://www.streetsdeli.com/

Lunch spots in Downtown Durham?

The Pit (of Raleigh) is coming to Durham? Where?

Bread & Butter Bakery Chapel Hill

I was there on Wednesday afternoon. I bought a loaf of sesame seed bread - full of black sesame seeds on the inside. Very tasty and fragrant, especially right out of the toaster.

I tasted a sample of black olive bread which was very good too.

new korean restaurant Han Joong Kwan

I have not been there yet. A friend of my son has been there for lunch. She is from Thailand so she knows Asian food. No specifics, but she said she enjoyed her lunch.

new korean restaurant Han Joong Kwan

Is this restaurant also known as Inter Korea House? That's the name I saw on their sign before they were scheduled to have their grand opening on September 21.

Latin Grill in Clayton

My wife and I made the drive from Durham to Clayton yesterday afternoon and had lunch at Latin Grill. The review by Shanenolan2 is very accurate. The food we had was excellent and the service was very attentive. The menu is not extensive - grilled steak, chicken, pork ribs plus some shrimp options. We shared a 1/2 chicken 1/2 ribs plate. This came with a generous serving of yellow rice, absolutely delicious french fries, some pickled vegetables and a nice salsa plus very flavorful herbed (thyme and/or oregano) garlic bread. The chicken had been split and flattened for grilling and was tender, moist and flavorful. The ribs were moist and tender. There was no dry rub or sauce on the ribs, they may have been marinated. We also ordered a side of sweet plantains. The other sides available included another style of plantains and fried yuca. We shared a serving of flan for dessert.

While I was hoping they would have a more extensive menu with items that I had never had before, the food we had was excellent and the style of preparing the chicken and ribs was different and delicious.

Has anyone been to the Latin Grill in Clayton?

Just opened two weeks ago according to Andrea Weigl in the N&O - "Latin Grill now open in Clayton
Brothers Eddy and Galo Andrade recently opened the Latin Grill in Clayton. The 49-seat restaurant serves Portuguese and Argentinian food, including grilled steaks, ribs and chicken. It opens for lunch and dinner every day from 11 a.m. to 10 p.m. The restaurant is at 876 Gulley Drive, off U.S. 70 in Clayton."

We are big fans of Portuguese food and hope to get there soon.

Shiitake Mushrooms in Western Wake/Chatham?

Spain Farms also comes to the Durham Farmers Market. Their shitake mushrooms are fantastic and they have lots of recipe suggestions. They will likely also have duck and duck eggs.

They were at the Durham market three weeks ago with some early mushrooms. They said it would be a few weeks until they would be back with more. We're hoping that will be next week.
