Private room in Los Angeles for 30 people
Darya Persian Food in West LA has a private room on the second floor that can accomodate your group.
The Universal Hilton in Studio City has one of my favorite rooms for that size party. They have a giant 30 person circular table and they serve Chinese banquet style. It's like a UN meeting in a private room. There is a couch and Projection TV in a separate greeting area in the same room that people can congregate in before sitting down. If you want some decoration like flowers on the table, you need to provide that yourself.
Can anyone suggest a reasonably priced oceanview restaurant buy-out in Santa Monica?
Back on the Beach - very casual. Back room only accommodates about 40. Weather is too uncertain in Feb to rely on outside seating.
Mexican restaurant at the end of Santa Monica Pier. Great views, drinks OK, cheap, but so so food.
Casa Del Mar Lobby. They have set up a Sunday brunch on the window in the bar area for me. Good views, food OK, but private area, not a private room if you need to give speeches, etc.
Shutters Pool area - they've set up Sunday brunch for me before. However, outdoors may not be good in Feb because of the unpredictable weather.

The instructions to vote for either recommendations to a houndly Out of Town visitor or special occasion meal to another Chowhound changes my vote from one based just on food rating. For Out of Town Vistors, I leaned to restaurants that are special or unique to to LA .... and so must include a Chinese, Mexican restaurant, and Korean restaurant. The unique family style format and great food brings Mozza2Go Scuola di Pizza experience to the top of my list, although other Italian restaurants may deliver marginally better food. Giving credit for a special and unusual experience is what kept other restaurants ahead of Bay Cities, Bludso's BBQ, Park's BBQ, Lawry's and Maestro's and is what kept Shanghai #1 ahead of other excellent Chinese restaurants.
Thanks for picking up the torch this year for the Ultimate Restaurant Poll.
Santa Monica - Good grub recommendations
Here are some recs for food experiences in the Westside (not just Santa Monica):
1. Hot Truck Tuesday Evenings at the Victorian on Main Street Santa Monica - A changing group of gourmet hot trucks. Some run out of food after 9 pm, and lines get longer and longer as the evening goes on.
2. Musha Japansese fusion tapas on Wilshire Blvd
3. Bay Cities Deli - Italian Sub Sandwiches (Godmother recommended) on Lincoln Blvd.
4. Umami Burger in the trendy Fred Segal clothing shopping complex on 5th St.
5. Bar Pinxto Spanish Tapas
6. Back on the Beach for Breakfast on the Ocean Sand. OK Breakfast. Eat ont eh sand and Santa Monica bike path. Rent bicycles or rollerblades nearby.
Cab ride away. Grab a bunch of your fellow food bloggers and try these places. Rent a car or share a taxi.
7. Chego on Overland Blvd in Culver City is Roy Choi's (Of Kogi BBQ fame) Casual approach on Korean Fusion ricebowls. Two blocks south is from Scoops Unique ice cream concoctions. Two East is Simpang Asia, an Indonisian Cafe where you can try shaved ice deserts and indonesian dessert pastiries in addition to Indonesian street foods.
8. Mexican restaurants popular on the Westside are Tacos Por Favor(check hours if going at night) on Olympic in Santa Monica and Monte Alban Oaxacan food on Santa Monica Blvd in West LA. Monte Alban is known for it's Moles, Chicken Soup, adn clayuda (Mexican Pizza) and fresh juices.
9. Baby Blues BBQ on Lincoln is a Memphis Syle BBQ place with funky music playing. Recommend the Giant Beef Rib (Prime rib on the Bone) and collard greens.
10. "LIttle Teheran" is Westwood Blvd in Westwood with Persian shops, ice cream and many restaurants. My recommendation is Javan on Santa Monica Blvd W of the main concentration. Favorite dishes are Ash Joe barley/lentil/red bean soup, Fezenjahn walnut/pomegrananate chicken stew and beef or chicken koubideh(ground meat on skewers).
11. Lemonade gourmet salad bar (also seafood, stews and soups) in Venice on Abott Kinney. Abbott Kinney Blvd may merit stroll.
12. "Little Osaka" Japanese area on Sawtelle Ave N of Olympic. Places to go Hurry Curry (Japanese Curry on nooodles/rice), Yuu Japanese tapas/sushi, Orris Asian fusion tapas, Volcano boba milkd tea, slushes and shaved ice, ToFo Ya Korean hot tofu and other dishes, Sawtelle Kitchen for 1/2 price appetizers, desserts, wines/beers during Happy hour (which seems to be all night weekdays). Great area to walk around.
13. Waterloo & City high quality Tapas. Tehy call themselves English Pub food, but it is much better. Across the Street is another Roy Choi restaurant "A Frame" that has strong flavored Asian fusion adventure foods. Two blocks away is a bar Alibi which serves the Korean Tacos and Korean Breakfast burrito Roy Choi made famous on his hot truck.
14, Versailles Cuban Food on Venice Blvd in Culver City. There are several locations, but this is the closest, the original and the best. Order the combination chicken/roast pork.
15. Ethnic areas that really need a car to get to ... but for food bloggers from out fo town are worth making the effor to go to are Koreatown and Del Mar Square in San Gabriel.
BARS to try:
16. Casa Del Mar 5 star hotel bar with the night time view of the Santa Monica Pier.
17. Shangri La Pool Bar with the beautiful people. Upstairs can get breezy this time of year. They also have a downstairs pool areas.
18. High Bar at the Hotel Erwin in Venice has a narrow bar on the roof with couches facing outward. Great to watch the sun set on the Ocean, but can get chilly this time of year.
19. Zengo Asian/Latin fusion restaurant at the 4th Floor of Santa Monica Place Mall has a $35 all you can eat/drink Sunday brunch where you just keep ordering off their menu. Great fun for a group of young foodies.
These should keep you busy.

Small Private Room on the Westside
Hop Li Chinese restaurant on Santa Monica Blvd has 2 private rooms. They have a minimum, but it should be no problem to keep it affordable for your group.
The Chinese restaurant at the NWC of Barrington and Wilshire has a private room with 2 tables for 10 each. Have not been there in it's current incarnation.
Vinosnob mentioned Enoteca Drago in Beverly Hills. Wine can get pricey. They offered prix fixe $32 menus at one time. On a non weekend, they might allow your group to go with some kind of Prix Fixe menu.
Less pricey Italian, with more chain restaurant food but further away in Santa Monica is il Fornaio and Buca di Bepo.

Looking for Private Dining Room with Screen and A/V Capabilities in Los Angeles area
Los of restaurants with private room now have AV hook ups. A few suggestions:
1. Izakaya & Bar Fu-Ga in Little Tokyo has a great back room with a ceiling mounted projector/projection screen I just used last night..
2. Maria's Italian Kitchen Downtown.
3. Several Karaoke places around town have screens and food capabilties. There is usually a charge per hour at these places.
4. Various Daily Grill locations have private rooms of varying sizes. Many have palsma screens in the room. the Daily Grills have Prix fixe menus also available making it easier to serve groups.
5. Many Chinese restaurants have Karaoke set ups in their private rooms. Universal HIlton in Studio City has one of my favorite set ups with a circular table to seat 30.
6. Zucca Restaurant is supposed to have a plasma screen in one of their private rooms. As part of the Patina Group, they charge NO corkage. I've had some great dinners there where we bring our own wine.
7. Shilla Korean BBQ Restaurant in Gardena has a private room with plasma screens. It seat maybe 30, but I had it to myself once with a group of 10.
Another way to go is to get a private room and bring your own screen and projector. Craig's List have several guys who will rent the whole setup for a day rather inexpensively.
For movies, I like a Big Screen. I would go with #1 Izakawa Fu-Ga above or grab a Chinese Banquet room without windows and bring my own projector/screen/speakers. I'm choosing Chinese because I like the food and because they will be more flexible in you keeping the room after eating.

Vegetarian tasting menus at different prices
Not in Hollywood and not directly responsive, but Embassy Kitchen in San Gabriel has a great vegetarian 10 course menu. You can reserve a private room. Not elaborate decor, but adequate in the private room. I haven't done it in several year, and so the price is a bit hazy... probably about $300/table. Free corkage. I did something similar there to what you are planning and juiced it up with lobster and fish for the nonvegetarians.

kogi bbq at albi room
1. Alibi room does not appear to have takout.
2. Try Chego on Overaland for another Roy Choi kid friendly location. Three blocks west of Alibi is A Frame, a third Roy Choi restaurant, which is kid friendly, but much pricier than the first two.
3. Look at the Santa Monica Gourmet Hot Truck roundup on Tuesday nights at the Victorian on Main Street on Tuesday nights 5:30 pm to 9:30 pm. No Kogi BBQ, but other good hot trucks and restrooms and tables at the Victorian.

Inexpensive good dinner in Santa Monica Tuesday eve
Here's what I would consider:
1. Lemonade on Abbott Kinney in Venice has gourmet salads in a trendy cafeteria environment. Two portions (4 half salads is a plentiful meal for $7.75/pp. They also have paninni, hot dishes and soups as well. Great salads!
2. Tacos Por Favor on Olympic is a casual Mexican taqueria. Good, fresh and $6 to $10 per person.
3. Victorian House on Main Street has a Gourmet Hot Truck Round Up every Tuesday night starting at 5 pm. No sit down, but affordable and fun and sure to appeal to all tastes.

Moving To Santa Monica and searched a lot! Check my list?!
Nice list and additional recommendations.
I would add to the mix;
* Versailles Cuban even though Jase prefers Rincon Criollo.
* Chego or Alibi for Kogi BBQ chef's Roy Choi's stationary restaurants.
* Simpang Asia for Indonesian cafe style food
* Pho 99 for the Westside's best attempt at Vietnamese Pho

SANTA MONICA - fun, birthday dinner
Not in Santa Monica, but nearby:
Waterloo & City is a lively Gastropub with afforadable and great selection of wine and beer and GREAT affordable smaller size dishes, but good for sharing. Everyone I have sent there is very happy.
Fun Place to Throw a Party?
Wokcano Santa Monica has a great Patio for the summer with http://www.chow.com/images/button-post_my_reply.20100713213627.gifmusic playing. Happy hour Prices 4 to 7:30 pm. I've hosted many parties there for 10 to 150 people.

CHEGO Soft Opening - Roy Choi of Kogi BBQ opens Rice Bowl concept on Westside
QM: Thanks for the correction on the $12 salad .... I was writing up the review from memory and obviously didn't pick up on the marketing name ....
We liked the chicken bowl a lot too. The prime rib bowl was substantial enough but the night we went it was a little dry. However I wouldn't be too judgemental during the soft opening.
CHEGO Soft Opening - Roy Choi of Kogi BBQ opens Rice Bowl concept on Westside
Roy Choi and his gang of Kogi BBQ fame just opened CHEGO at 3300 Overland just south of the Freeway was hopping tonight . A young half Asian crowd was having fun at 9 pm with 50's music playing in the background. The owners including Chef Roy Choi were circulating getting feedback. They have been having their soft opening since Wednesday and for now plan to be open Tuesday to Sunday 6 pm to midnight.
No Korean Tacos, but affordable Rice Bowls. with Korean Fusion approach. Starters for $4 or 5 are meatballs, Korean pickles, Fennel Salad, asparagus salad, Caesar Salad and the most expensive dish on the menu a $12 Spinach Salad with Asian ingredients.
Rice bowls ($7 or $8) feature Prime rib, Pork Belly, Chicken or Kim Chee Tofu, all with and egg, different vegetables and exotic sauces. Very creative and tasty. We tried the Prime Rib, Chicken and Kim Chee and liked the Chicken and Kim Chee the best. Many other customers liked the Pork Belly.
Drinks are Korean soft drinks, Mexican sodas and American sodas.
When you walk in, you place your order and take a number on a stand that IDs. You help yourself to drinks in a room behind the cash register and then select a table where your order is delivered in cardboard takeout bowls. The Alibi Room has Roy Choi's Kogi Korean tacos and the Kogi breakfast burrito, but it is a bar and kids aren't allowed. This is a kid friendly casual place, as long as the kids can handle the spiciness of the Korean ingredients. This will be a popular takeout place in the neighborhood.
Parking was OK, but once word gets out, parking could become a problem. If the sleepy Brazilian cafe next door jazzes up their offerings, they will be able to benefit from the sure to be CHEGO overflow crowds.
An excellent addition to the ethnic eateries on the Westside. Congratulations to the Roy Choi gang.

Best place to eat in Santa Monica? Will travel for great food!
Take a look at the Chowhound LA UL:TIMATE FOOD GUIDE Poll for 2009:
http://chowhound.chow.com/topics/673604
http://chowhound.chow.com/topics/673605
If you're looking for adventurous, upscale not stuffy, not american or Italian from poll results:
1. The Bazaar (#3 Over $25) - fun, adventurous, expensive, unique
LA Food is all about ethnic foods and adventure. Chinese in the San Gabriel Valley, Japanese in Torrance, Thai in Thai Town, funky in Venice. So ignoring your upscale request for upscale for a foodie from Chicago, I would also recommend off the ULTIMATE FOOD GUIDE list:
2. Animal - Casual but adventurous approaches to MEAT! (#7 over $25)
3. Gjelina - Casual Venice restaurant using fresh local ingredients near your hotel (#11 over $25)
4. Park's BBQ - Very casual Smoky top Korean BBQ n Koreatown (#12 over $25)
5. Matsuhisa - Pricey flagship restaurant of Nobu Matsuhisa (#27 of over $25)
6. Bistro LQ - Casual French style improvisations in bargain tasting menu (think sea urchin tapioca pudding with oyster and yuzu gelee) (#34 over $25)
7. XIV - Trendy tasting menu (not on Ultimate List, similar to Bazaar but without Spanish influence)
8. Jitlada - Casual Thai in Thaitown (#2 under $25)
9. Father's Office - Top gourmet burger in LA in a causal bar environment near your hotel (#6 under $25)
10. Torihei - Japanese Tapa in Torrance (#9 under $25 - can easily spend more)
11. Sea Harbour - Dim Sum lunch or Seafood Dinner in San Gabriel (#10 under $25)
12. Elite Restaurant - Dim Sum lunch or Dinner in Monterey Park (#12 under $25)
13. Javan - Persian restaurant near best concentration of Persian restaurants in US (#30 under $25) moderately close to your hotel
14. Spago - (#4 over $25) Lunch tasting menu less expensive, but needs advance notice
Of the above, the ones open for lunch are Spago, Gjelina, Jitlada, Park's BBQ, Father's Office (Sat/Sun), Sea Harbour, Elite and Javan.
My suggestion for 2 days:
1. Lunch: Gjelina (close), and Musha (Japanese not on Ultimate list but good and near your hotel). Consider Tasting Menu at Spago for lunch (good food, more relaxed than at dinner)
2. Dinner: Bazaar and either Matsuhisa or XIV.
3. Sneak a meal in to Father's Office to try their Burger
If you do Spago for lunch, two tasting menus in one day might be a bit much unless you schedule dinner late. Don't do Matsuhisa and Musha (both Japanese) in the same trip.
Good eating!
Need moderate priced nice place for dinner in Beverly Hills----on a Monday.
Enoteca Drago (Italian) on Canon Drive used to have a 3 course $32 prix fixe. You might check with them if they still offer that.
Chinatown.. need new place
JR Bistro is my pick for late night Chinatown restaurants ... They are open to 1 am and parking after 10 pm is plentiful and free.
Dinner for 10, downtown
Bottega Louie is too noisy for what you are looking for. You should get a private room.
Here are some suggestions in order of preference if price is an issue:
Daily Grill Downtown - They have a $29 2 course special which also includes a glass of wine. $350 minimum bill for the Boardroom. No corkage.
Chinatown - Several of the larger restaurants have private rooms. Minimum charge will be $300 to $500 depending on the restaurant. I recommend Ocean Seafood. Normally no corakage.
Patina Group - No corkage for their restaurants. Zucca and Nic & Stef's Steakhouse have private rooms. No Corkage.
McCormick & Schimck's has private rooms and a "clubby decor". I have not been impressed with their seafood. Not bad, but not great.
LA Live - Trader Vic's Wolfgang Puck and The Farm have private rooms. I don't know about the food or minimums.
Pricey Italian with Private rooms - Cicada, Drago Centro (noisy if not in private room)
Pricey Steak with Private room - The Palm
New American with Private room - NOE in the Omni hotel
Little Tokyo - Several of the Japanese restaurants in Little Tokyo have private rooms, but I cannot make any specific recommendations.

The Edison downtown has good food and a cool speakeasy envirionment. No Hollywood atitude and affordable prices. private areas and even a private room. I don't know what they would charge for the room, but last Friday night at 8:30 pm, all I needed to get a table is to guarantee $25/head. Checkout their website www.edisondowntown.com.
Sam Woo Turkey
I'm also looking at getting a turkey from Sam Woo or some of the other Chinese BBQ places in Chinatown or the SGV. From looking at reports online, it seems some of them are cooked like Chinese Roast Duck. However, it appears that there is some high risk of the white meat coming out too dry. Some reports have the BBQ restaurant providing the turkey and others have BBQ restaurant cooking for a fee the turkey you provide.
Does anyone have good personal experience with this and with specific location recommendations? If it's too dry and I have a house full of people, it will be too late to recover....

Both Anisette and Melisse have special Cirque Prix Fixe menus. Here is a list of Santa Monica restaurants that have dining specials:
Cirque Dining Specials http://www.santamonica.com/cirqueoffers/
no prix-fixe private room for 10-ish?
AppleCore: I have several groups where we need a private room for discussions in the same Santa Monica-Downtown area. The problem I run into is that some restaurants require a minimum guarantee ... I have not had a problem where they require a preordered menu. Nowadays, even the ones that have required a guarantee before are more flexible on weekdays. If it is a wekeend or not may make a difference.
Here are some suggestions of affordable restaurants with Private Rooms that may not have minimum guarantees: I'll also mention some with Open Areas that are somewhat private.
Buca Di Bepo Santa Monica- Quantity Red Italian. Not Chowhound Food, but lively and boisterous
Il Moro - Good Food. Pricey wine. Private room is all hard surfaces and can get noisy.
Wilshire Restarant - Several Private Rooms and a private Bar area overlooking the patio bar. If warm enough, the area overlooking the bar can be fund, but it is with low cocktail style tables. Can get pricey.
Catch Restaurant at Casa Del Mar Hotel - Not noisy and surprisingly affordable menu. Great views of the Pier and huge Clubby "Bar Lounge". they have a private room that probably has a minimum, but it doesn't have the great views either..
Il Fornaio - Italian Ok food, but again not houndish. Private room.
Back on the Beach - Not Houndish Food. But affordable and outstanding views since it is on the Beach. they have a private room, but if warm, I would opt for the picnic tables with toes in the sand...
La Serenata de Garibaldi - High end Mexican food. Second floor private room, but hard surfaces and noisy. Affordable.
Wokcano - OK Food if you order carefully, Private room in the back but more fun is the elevated open air mezzanine in the patio. On nights with a DJ, this is where the DJ is set up.
Korean BBQ - Any number of Korean BBQ restaurants have private rooms and the communcal ding makes for an adventure. Chosun Galbee is one of the best.
Chinese - Many Chinese restaurants have private rooms. On the Westside, there is Hop Li (Santa Monica Blvd location) and VIP Seafood. In Chinatown, i would pick Ocean Seafood.
Here is a summary with some others. Festive and Private Rooms are a tough combination because Private normally means secluded.
Private rooms, Good food, Can be Pricey - Valentino, Melisse, Michaels, Daily Grill Downtown, Il Moro, Pecorino, Il Moro, Grace,
Private Rooms, Affordable, Good Food, Festive - La Serenata de Garibaldi, Musha, Chosun Galbee Korean BBQ, Ocean Seafood
Private Room, Affordable, OK food, Festive - Buca di Bepo, La Serenata de Garibaldi, Wokcano, Back on the Beach
Private room, Affordable, OK Food, Not "Festive" - Hop Li on SM Blvd, VIP Seafood, Il Fornaio
Private Area, Affordable, Good Food, Festive or Adventure- Sawtelle Kitchen on the Patio, 2117 on the Patio, Catch, Wokcano
