Malaysian / Nyonya Style Cuisine
looks fantastic. it's very near Lion City too so they have some close competition there.
After Penang shut down in Frisco we had a hard time finding good Malaysian food. Sure we could drive up to Secret Recipe but the food was never as good when the owner wasn't cooking so it was hit or miss.

Soup Dumplings
If you mean Xiao long bao with the soup inside the dumplings - it's a toss up btw Royal China and Yao Fuzi. JS Chen has terrible food - we went for dim sum and it was awful. My problem with Jeng Chi sometimes is that the meat sometimes doesn't taste as fresh as it should be.
The dumpling bar is great at Royal china but aside from the hand pulled noodles and dumplings at Royal china we don't really eat anything else there. Everything else seems pretty much like your usual american chinese food.

Back in St George Island & Apalachicola
We were here last year around the same time. Has there been any changes? New 'must try' restaurants. We're staying in a house and can cook ourselves if there are any new fresh fish markets etc.
Last time we tried:
The Owl
Cafe Con leche
Verandas (is that the one with the wine shop adjoining it?)
Indian Pass raw oyster bar
Reccs near Phoenician Resort and also close to night life/live music?
Bunch of girls staying @ The Phoenician over the weekend. Would love some offsite recommendations and restaurants also near some night life or live music?
I've noted Noca, F&B & Vincent's. Are they near any live music venues?
what about great Breakfast/Lunch spots?

St George Island/Apalachicola - personal chef reccomendation?
Thanks so much! I shall try the recommendations.
St George Island/Apalachicola - personal chef reccomendation?
We're staying in St George Island for a week and was wondering if anyone can recommend a chef to come to our place to prepare dinner for a few days. There's 4 adults and 4 toddlers. Toddlers will eat what we eat - so no kid's stuff like hot dogs/hamburgers.
Any reccs would be great!
Thanks!

glad to see that hounders are as passionate abt their furniture as they are about their food.
Apalachicola: Need recommendation/dinner/room
Sorry i thought it was a really big house. i guess it's more of a building. with the shops downstairs.
Help - Fresh produce in Apalachicola?
thank you! i found it by accident today but unfortunately it was closed. i think coz of the rain. I did see some of their tomatoes and they looked really good! i must say that all the restos we've been have served us really fresh salads so i'm astonished that there isn't a big variety of fresh stuff at the grocery store
Help - Fresh produce in Apalachicola?
We're staying at St George island at a beach house. Wanted to get some fresh fruits but the produce were pretty limited at Piggly Wiggly and IGA...
Where do people go for a good variety of fresh fruit/vegies. Some of the produce we saw weren't the freshest.
Suggestions appreciated.
Apalachicola: Need recommendation/dinner/room
We got here on Saturday.
the first night we ate at the Blue parrot at St George Island. It was terrible and terribly overpriced. Better options were found at Apalachicola.
Tried the Owl Cafe for lunch. Great food. we loved the victorian house that it was in.
Verandas Bistro was also great. We loved the adjoining wine room where u can purchase and drink wines at retail store prices ($5 corkage but what a bargain!). the wines were truly excellent and varied.
Boss Oyster today - WE WILL BE GOING BACK FOR SURE! the raw oysters were amazing. the best i've tasted. The grouper chowder is a total miss. it was just gummy. The grouper fish and chips were also good. But oh... the oysters.... i can go on abt them.
That Place in Apalach - it was good. But not great. The steamed shrimp were delicious. But the menu is modest as was the wine list but the prices weren't cheap.
I'd like to try my hand at buying some seafood and cooking it at home - any reccs on where we could buy good seafood? We read abt Lynn's seafood. Any comments? Suggestions?
We're here for the rest of the week so if anyone has any great resto reccs - please tell us. We're in St George Island.
anyplace to buy vegemite in d/fw

also stocks them as well as Aussie chocolates, cookies and MEAT PIEs! the sausage rolls are to die for!
Rush Patisserie
i'm confused. so she's not moving? but the logo looked the same in the uptown establ;ishment i thought.
Fun/Trendy Downtown Dallas Dining Option
I wouldn't bother with Iron Cactus either except for drinks. A popular downtown option for Tex Mex is San Miguel's (akard - near Elm. it's just by the Dart rail (akard station) so u can't miss it. If you go after midday, there's always a line.
Scene is great! they have a 3 course prix fixe for only $42 ($38 if you go early).
Also Dallas Fish Market is a good choice. Lurve the modern decor.
I'd also try Charlie Palmer's (main). they have great steaks there and yummy desserts.
Visit to San Antonio - restaurant suggestions? [moved from the Austin board]
I'll be in San Antonio for four days. Any suggestions on good lunch places?
WE've got a car and will do touristy things like Riverwalk/Alamo. We're staying somewhere in teh Northwest near a medical center but am willing to drive for good food.
I've been to Fonda years ago! it was very good.
Carribean Pan - Dallas - Trinidad Cuisine
The food here is totally authentic!!!! WE LOVE going here. The curried chicken is fantastic. We also love the people working there. it's family owned and they are soooo warm. i really feel that it's a little part of the caribbean. I would definitely recommned this place.
French Macarons in Dallas
talking abt Rush... is it closing the Elm St location to open up on Lemmon? I saw the sign as i was driving past the other day on Lemmon near oaklawn.
Yao FuZi, good Shanghainese in Plano
i'll have to try this. I tried that other Shanghai place near Coit/Campbell and wasn't that impressed. The XLB was pretty good though the skin was a bit too thick for my liking. the restof the dishes were mediocre. all the meat seemed a bit dry and old.
DAL - Scene Restaurant Downtown
My neighbors just went for dinner. THey said the lamb loin was just fab and so was the tenderloin. their only complaint was that drinks were a bit expensive. $12 for a Stoli and tonic... But then again they also said that it seemed that Scene was aiming to be a more high end restaurant like Stephen Pyles.
they also said that the decor was really nice and you felt like you were somewhere else.. not in a restaurant outside a Dart station.
DAL - Scene Restaurant Downtown
I've seen people in there this week. Anyone been? The crowds were spilling onto the sidewalks on their soft opening night.
New Mansion? anyone been?
i agree with Piegirl. We went last week and was blown away.
The Duck confit was amazing and it came with a really intense poblano mole. i had a king crab appetizer (big enough to share) with a garlic froth which was one of the highlights. the meat was so fresh and the execution just perfect.
For mains - I had a sturgeon which was so meaty it was almost like veal. it was done in an intense gribiche sauce and topped wtih caviar. i was swooning over every bite but i know that sturgeon might put people off as it's so firm. (it's the opposite of Chilean Sea bass in terms of texture)
My partner had shortribs with succotash which is great. nothing dry but i wasn't as enamoured with it as i was iwth the sturgeon.
Desserts - chocolate ganache with peanute butter crunch was sooooo yummy. And so was the lemon frozen souffle.
All in all... the Mansion is BACk baby!
next time i think we'll just share the king crab appetizer so that i'm not so stuffed by the time we get to dessert.
