Visiting Montreal with 2yo toddler

We also have a 2-year-old and feel comfortable taking her almost anywhere In Montreal, as long as it's not a forced multi-course meal (no BYOWs yet)-- she just can't sit still that long. But that still leaves a lot of options. There's also a restaurant in Parc La Fontaine now (although I haven't been yet).

Children under age 6 ride the bus and metro for free. Single fares are $3 or you can buy a 3 day card for $22 (16 +6 for the opus card)

Have you heard of M4 Burritos?

I had been threatening to give up my day job to open up a burrito joint in Montreal. I am really hoping that these are a good approximation of an SF burrito stand-- I mean it's really not that hard!

Where to find non-BPA canned or jarred or boxed tomatoes?

wow. that's a great price! Thanks.

avocado oil in Montreal?

I was just at the Provigo on Parc and Sherbrooke. They have a good number of the Black Label products-- they are interspersed throughout the store (not in one place).

Spice Station - Spice Heaven

Thanks, kpzoo! Looks fantastic-- I love buying my spices in small amounts like this.

avocado oil in Montreal?

I've been keeping my eyes open for rice bran oil but haven't seen it around. Where do you get it?

Where to find non-BPA canned or jarred or boxed tomatoes?

to answer my own question!

It looks like Eden's canned tomatoes (pretty readily available here, but also pricey) have a very miniscule amount of BPA:

Are Eden's canned tomatoes packed in cans with enamel lining that contain bisphenol-A?
Eden Organic Tomatoes are packed in steel cans coated with a baked on r-enamel lining. Due to the acidity of tomatoes, the lining is epoxy based and may contain a minute amount of bisphenol-A, it is however in the 'non detectable' range according to independent laboratory extraction tests. The test was based on a detection level at 5 ppb (parts per billion).

Hot Horseradish

I found fresh horseradish root at the new Waldman's on St. Laurent!

Where to find non-BPA canned or jarred or boxed tomatoes?

In light of this article from this week's JAMA: http://jama.ama-assn.org/content/306/20/2218.2.short , I am recommitting myself to eliminating BPA from the food I buy. The only thing really giving me trouble over the past year are canned tomatoes. I use canned tomatoes a few times per week!

Any leads on where I can buy either: jarred tomatoes (I know Eden makes them) or the Pomi-style tetrapak tomatoes? Muir Glen has eliminated BPA from their cans, but I don't think they are sold in Canada. Any other companies use BPA-free cans that you know of?

Perhaps this summer I will try my hand at home canning. . .

Hot Horseradish

Where can I find horseradish root? I want to make some Bloody Mary's!

avocado oil in Montreal?

Me too. Try Bioterre on St. Viateur or Tao on St. Denis. Rachelle-Bery might carry it too.

Openings in 2012

Just drove past a new upcoming opening-- Grille Glace (I think)-- on St. Denis @ Cherrier. Anyone know anything about it/

Coconut water

Siegel's on St. Laurent sells it for a bit cheaper- can't remember which brand though.

Which free meal would you choose in Montreal?

I vote for Pintxo!

Where can I buy pigeon in Montréal?

They definitely have guinea hen there.

Gelatin sheet (silver strengh)

I believe that they have them at La Vieille Europe on St. Laurent (can't remember if it's gold or silver strength though).

BUTCHER SHOP THAT SHOULD BE A DESTINATION FOR ALL FOODIES MONTREAL

Sounds like the one on Clark, if it's near La Chronique.

Alternate iconic dishes

As a California transplant, I have to agree. Little Saigon in Southern California is pretty spectacular. I had a Vietnamese place around the corner from my apt. in SF that was better than anything I've had in Montreal.

Traveling to Montreal with a Fine Dinning Chef

I know that this thread is super old now, but I was reading through these old reviews and have to give my $.02. I had been meaning to write a review of DNA for a long time and now I'm compelled to do so b/c of OP's experience. I too ordered the homemade pasta on the night I went and it was totally raw! Not al dente, but hard and uncooked in the center. I alerted the waiter to have it sent back (something I never do-- I've done it maybe 5 times in my life) and he came back with my plate a second later and said that "the chef said it's perfectly done." I was flabbergasted! Did he taste my pasta himself and then send it back to me? I didn't eat it and had it taken away, but it really ruined what was supposed to be a nice evening out. I guess the moral of the story is not to order the pasta at DNA.

Casual Plateau Bistro

Any interest in a BYO? I think that Le P'tit Plateau fits the bill as does Bistro L'Entrepont and La Colombe. But I think Au Cinquieme Peche is probably a notch above those choices.

I haven't been to the moved La Montee de Lait, but that might be a nice option.

Another suggestion is to go up to Jean-Talon Market and eat there (mexican, middle eastern, etc.) Also, there is a Farmer's Market on St. Dominique and Laurier on Sundays at noon. Bonus is that there's an awesome splash pad for kids across the street.

Local seasonal plateau with toddler

We have a toddler and live not too far from there. We tend to go to places that are not multi-course in order to get in and out rather quickly. Do you want to stay within walking distance?
Within walking distance and toddler compatible, we go to Rumi, Les Epinards, L'Express (surprisingly child friendly, but get there early or make a reservation), Miga (VERY child-friendly Korean food), Aux Vivres (vegetarian, open for lunch and dinner), Rotisserie Romados (for take-out), Arepera du Plateau (Venezuelan). These are all very casual and where we feel comfortable with our 18-month-old. Let us know if you want more upscale choices.

Daikon for sale (in the Plateau)?

thanks, everyone. I didn't get to it yesterday but will shop today.

Daikon for sale (in the Plateau)?

Has anyone seen daikon for sale in the Plateau area? I'd like to buy some for tonight! Anyone know if Eden sells it?

Visiting: Looking for amazing/fascinating dinner meal w great service

I actually had terrible service at DNA. I will never go back. If service is one of your top priorities, skip DNA.

Favorite Plateau lunch?

Thanks, everyone. Les Epinards is a new one to me! I am going to try it out very soon.

Favorite Plateau lunch?

I moved to the lower Plateau (near The Main) and also work from home a couple of days/week. I am looking for suggestions for good lunch spots-- all kinds of food welcome- cafe, ethnic, bistro, etc.

I sometimes go to Reservoir, Cafe Neve, Romados, Miga, Soupe Soupe. There are so many other little places-- which ones are good? Any lunch specials stand out?

APDC Cabane à sucre 2011

Fantastic photos!

APDC Cabane à sucre 2011

oh, we got the tortiere too. SO GOOD. It came early in the meal, so I had to hold myself back in order to save room for everything else. They do sell them to go too. I wish we had bought one. And yes to the house beer. We had two pitchers worth!

APDC Cabane à sucre 2011

Just recovering now! I have to say that we had a MUCH better time than the poster below (although our dishes were the same ones). We felt it was well worth the trip and the money. And we were all full, but not disgustingly so. And we found the dining room cozy and warm.

-I thought that the smoked sturgeon with blinis and sour cream was absolutely delicious. And the salad with pork rinds was surprisingly light.
-Ditto for the lobster omelette which was chock full of lobster meat and just a touch of maple syrup. That course was served with a delicious corn relish too.
-We had plenty of food in the next course-- the pork shoulder and the chicken. The pork was sweet and succulent and served with delicious maple syrup soaked roasted vegetables. I ate way more of it that I really should have.
-I was surprised at how good the desserts were. We loved the frozen nougat with chocolate on top and the crepes frites and tarte tatin were out of this world.

I would go back again next year. Hell, I might even go back again with a cancellation this year! To tell you the truth, I am glad that they toned it down; I think it made it far more enjoyable. I have left every meal I've had at APDC feeling mildly ill for all the richness, but I made it through this one no problem.
