Fabulous dinner in San Diego???
bobierto, did you read the guys question. Hodads, for a nice dinning experience? Good burger but what are you thinking? Dude!! The mission? What!!
Suite and Tender in SD...Anyone been yet?
Ive got three words EX PENS IVE! $19 for a dirty martini, damn. It was good, but damn... I tried some of the bar food. The chicken wings, the ahi tar tar, and something else that has left my mind, but it was okay. I really like the interior, and of course if you are not staying there the parking sucks. There are some just as up scale bar spots up in bankers hill area now that have just as good if not better food, and less expensive as well, and a good drink you can find almost anywhere.
does anyone know who won the chef of the fest competition at the san diego bay food and wine festival this year/
I had to leave earlier then i wanted and did not see the results.
Professional Chef considering move to San Diego
Hey Chef GK, how are things brother...?
Professional Chef considering move to San Diego
nientefar, I have to somewhat disagree. I feel while there are just not as many places here in sd, there are some places that would succeed in other larger restaurant towns.. I do feel it is not the chefs it is the culture here that impedes the culinary growth. But it is not so "dismal" like you put it. You have to find the places that are doing the innovative stuff, and help, some how, get people to understand that "good" is not necessarily a huge plate of mediocre food. That fresh high quality produce, fish, and meat that are produced correctly are what should make a great meal. I have had meals at michelin star places in SF and NY, and I feel some of the food, (minus the service) could compete. Some of the places carsonporkbelly mentioned are definitely are in that category plus a few more. I feel its a matter of not having many more of those places to make this a food city. BTW Gavin Kaysen's food was anything but traditional french.

Hey chef, are you purposely leaving off the name of the restaurant you are currently working at? I am dying of curiosity. I like all the restaurants listed in this post but might want to add a couple. For one Laurel is doing some really nice stuff. Probably the most successful restaurant in SD right now is Market. The food is a perfect blend of what "California" cuisine is. The chef just got nominated for a James Beard award. Gavin Kaysen is no longer in SD, he went on to be the chef a Cafe Boulud in NY. Good luck GK!! Nine-Ten, i did not see anywhere on the post but Jason Knibb does some really nice stuff as well......Let us know where you land..
Dinner at the Bar (San Diego)
Laurel does Tapas Tuesday. The chef makes the Tapas right at the bar in front of you.. They are really good and the crowd is fun.. You need to get there early so you can get a seat...It is pretty popular lately.
San Diego - Pearl Hotel anyone?
I have not had very good experience with the food there but the atmosphere is pretty cool. The Dive In Movie Theater on Wednesday nights, gotta check it out. And on monday night they have a $5 you call it for industry people. The new chef is supposed to be a step up from what they had before. Cant be a step down! I will wait for him to get adjusted and then I will maybe check it out......I will let you know.
San Diego's Bite- Once Bitten, Twice Try
If you like the restroom there you should see the one at The Pearl. On a scale of 1 to 5 stalls I give it 4 stalls. I give the one at Bite 4 as well. 5 stalls is a hard one to achieve.
3rd Corner (San Diego)
The corkage is pretty cheap for a "corkage". If you go after 11 it is waved, and even if you pay it the bottle will be well cheaper then if you got it another restaurant anyway. I have never had the shortrib, but the shrimp arabiata is really good. I have had it a few times and it has never been bad. The soup is usually pretty good as well. Dont let one bad flanken change your mind on this place. Flanked just sounds bad, huh!
OK San Diego, I think I've done my homework....
Somewhere in the gaslamp for lunch that is pretty good, I dont know if you are into indian food, but royal india has a really good lunch buffet. I know what you are thinking, indian buffet, it is really good though..
Need a great caterer in San Diego or La Jolla
Urban Kitchen Catering does some nice stuff. They will customize a menu for you, nice touch..I also had some good stuff from a company called chillico I think the name was. I had a sample of there stuff at the SD food and wine festival, and it was really good. They specialize in Asian stuff.
San Diego biz trip, help!
there are some good options downtown. Try Chive if you want something really good. They have small plates and a good happy hour. It is close to the hotel you are at and is fairly inexpensive. The small plates help you regulate how much you spend
