Bob's Yer Uncle on North Dodge St./Hwy1

Excellent point IowaBoy. I will note the city in the future. So have you had their pizza? Excellent!
Definitely not Pagliai's type but delish nonetheless.

Thanksgiving Dinner in Cedar Rapids/Iowa City

Dear 12Daniel17, Bishops is no longer available in downtown CR or either of the two mall locations where it was. They just closed up. I used to go with my grandmother when I was a kid so I really miss them ;but alas they are all out of business. There are several places to eat in the Amana Colonies but I have to agree that the Ox Yoke Inn is the best. There is also the Ronnenberg restaurant and then the Brick Haus down the road a bit. Check for the "family style" places for the holidays but sometimes you have to have a reservation because they are very crowded on the holidays. If you do go to the Ox Yoke Inn, have the Rhubarb Custard pie with Meringue. It is to die for. One of my favorites of all times. There are seven sister colonies and you have to get off I-80 onto Hwy 150 to get to Main Amana. A good side trip but a few miles out of the way.

Thanks Lisa, I love Alladin and try to go there often. I just love their salad with parsley and olive oil. One of my favorites. I also like Thai Moon which is in the same strip mall. They do an excellent lunch service and my favorite is curried prawns. They also do sushi but I have other favorite places for sushi. Pops my cork! Thanks for your response, Lisa.

One would think a small city this size would have a number of good places to eat but alas the number is way too few. Any recommendations are greatly appreciated. I take clients out to dinner some times and I want good places to take them. So tell me what you think. Thanks, RubyBluebird

Just had dinner at Taste of India on Boyson Rd. in Hiawatha. Very good. Nice hole-in-the-wall type place, cozy and intimate. I had some very simple stuff: Chicken and vegetables in Basmahti rice along with Naan and raita. Pretty spicy for me but overall very good.

Other ideas?
Thanks, Susan

Iowa City

Sheep's Head took over the building that Grace and Rubie's used to be in. What wonderful times those were. Petitioning the City Council for an alcohol permit for an all girl's restaurant. Afterall it was 1973 and it hadn't been done, to have an all girl's soup shop/ private organization. It even drew an article or two from big magazines. Some sneaky bastard creeping around the garbage cans for whatever was on the menu for the day. I was on the board of Directors up until it went under. But great food! Absolutely delish! 1973-1975 or so. Those were the days!

I used to love going there. They had the best sandwiches and soup for lunch. I remember having some of the best bean soup of my entire life there. Truly memorable. Where did those folks go? I miss them. Susan in Cedar Rapids

That little place around the corner from the Sheraton downtown is The Mill Restaurant. They have excellent Italian food, great antipasto I love the baked lasagna and incredible garlic bread. But more about the Mill. It has or used to have the greatest entertainment for miles around. Sometimes ecclectic sometimes just wild and wacky. Sometimes they will have singers or bands. I used to love going there when I was a student but haven't been there for a while. I remember the good old days of "Duck's Breath Mystery Theater" and its offshoots with Dr. Science and other bust- a-gut funny stuff. Always worth the trip. Susan in Cedar Rapids

Iowa City

I live in Cedar Rapids just up the road from Iowa City and I love to escape to Iowa City where I went to the Big U for good food. Among my favorites:

Sushi Popo for Japanese
Hamburg Inn for burgers or Tenderloins (ubiquitous in Iowa but I have never seen them elsewhere) and fries, or breakfast
I love Pagliai's for Pizza, good memories from my college days.
Takanami.
I really like Mondo's in Coralville for a good lunch with clients.
There are a few great Asian restaurants around-- Aoeshe on S.Gilbert and two in Coralville on the same road that goes out to I80 in Coralville.
I have to say the the Motley Cow on Market Street is always good. Delightful, fresh, delicious, even great coffee with dessert. (So many places in Iowa have horrid coffee, apparently the farmers have to have weak coffee so they can hit the sack at 7 p.m.)
I don't know if the Airliner is still in business but used to be a great place for a beer, burger and fries. .
