New found addiction to Nutella
Only during Lent, believe me! Come Easter Sunday morning, I'll be sitting on the floor surrounded by empty Easter egg boxes.... in the meantime, I've made an Italian hazelnut cake for tonight, in an attempt to enjoy a Nutella-like taste minus the cocoa. I just know it won't be the same though!!
New found addiction to Nutella
re: CoryKatherine
Oh yeah, that alone would almost be worth the price of the flight! We're using the jar of Nutella in our house to curb Lenten cravings - two of us have given up chocolate for Lent, so we open the jar to enjoy the aroma whenever we're hankering for a bit of chocolate. Takes a lot of willpower to put that lid back on...
Is it possible to avoid Valentine's day in London?
Thanks DollyDagger! I looked at the Reservation section on J Sheekey's website, they've put a big red X through the 14th - either they're booked out or they feel the same way I do!! It looks really good though, maybe I'll get there another day.
Is it possible to avoid Valentine's day in London?
pj26, abby d and greedygirl, thanks so much for all the suggestions - you've given me enough restaurant ideas for the whole weekend! Now I'm really looking forward to this trip!
Is it possible to avoid Valentine's day in London?
My mum, some female relatives and I are going to London 14-16 February to celebrate my mum's birthday. We haven't booked any restaurants yet, it's kind of a freeform weekend, but I am nervous about the Saturday night, which is Valentine's night. Nervous both because I expect all restaurants to be booked solid for the night, and because I've just come out of a long-term relationship, and I'm concerned that the sight of all those couples is just going to depress me; I really don't want to get sad at my mum's birthday celebration. Restaurants are full of couples at the best of times, but Valentine's just seems to bring out the lame in people.
So, is it possible to avoid Valentine's day in London? I think there'll be about eight of us going out for dinner, and our budget will probably be about 30 pounds per head - if that's below the radar for this forum that's cool, if all else fails I'm going to take everyone to Nando's! Lunch suggestions for City area and general rants about Valentine's day also accepted!
Dining in the in-between places (Dublin to Galway to Giant's Causeway, back to Dublin)
If you end up as far north as Rathmullan, there's a fish restaurant in Greencastle (in the Inishowen peninsula) called Kealy's: I haven't eaten there but I've only ever heard great things about it, and it's a member of the "Seafood Circle", an Irish quality standard for seafood. Should be a good place to get some very fresh fish.
I'm heading up to Inishowen this weekend, if I see anything else worth recommending I'll let you know!
Has anyone made Nigella's strawberry meringue cake?
I contacted her team before about a cake that went funny by emailing domesticgoddess@nigella.com - they replied really quickly and were helpful (the error was on my side in that instance).
You probably know this, but there's a page on her website which corrects errors in her books,
http://www.nigella.com/news/detail.asp?article=1890&area=5
I just checked it and I don't see anything about a strawberry meringue cake, but if the two of you have had trouble with it, maybe it should be added to the list!
Dublin/Galway
I think those are more traditionally English dishes rather than Irish dishes, but you should be able to find sausages and mash in Dublin! Not sure about toad in the hole though.
[Dublin]- treating friends to dinner
At Rhodes D7 a couple of months ago five of us had Sunday lunch (main course and dessert, soft drinks only) for 150 euro. Everyone really enjoyed their meals, which were simple but tasty - we had steak, lamb and roast beef - and the restaurant had a pleasant relaxed atmosphere.

I'm not sure if it's exactly what you're looking for, but I thought since it was close to your stated budget I'd mention it. I agree with harters that menupages.ie is a good site to check out, it'll give you a fair idea of the price range that's out there.
Best packaged non-bakery store bought cookies
The difference between a cake and a cookie may cost the British taxman a lot of money soon..

A cute website on all things biscuit-/cookie-related is
www.nicecupofteaandasitdown.com
though it may cause food envy, as I'm not sure how many of the brands they discuss are available in the States.
I LOVE mcvities!!
Uses for powdered cappuccinos?
Wow, phoenikia, thanks so much!! I'm going to try out the cake or the brownies first, they sound good – and I think I'll test the mock tiramisu recipe on an Italian friend of mine, see what she thinks of it . . . The recipe sounds so mad, I can't even begin to imagine how it will taste!
Uses for powdered cappuccinos?
Thanks, I'll look around for a charity that'll take them. Nothing ruins a holiday like not being able to get a decent cup of tea or coffee in the morning, I'm glad it worked out in Greece!
Uses for powdered cappuccinos?
Thanks, I'll try to find a charity that'll take them. And maybe save a few packets to give the frosting a try..!
Uses for powdered cappuccinos?
My boyfriend's grandmother has been giving me boxes of powdered instant cappuccinos (basically a mix of dried skimmed milk, sugar and instant coffee) and there's no way I can drink them all. Just looking at the four boxes I currently have sitting in my kitchen deeply discourages me. Some of the boxes are going to expire soon, and I hate to waste food (even when it's horrid powdered-milk food): does anyone have any ideas for a way to use them, in cakes or cookies or something like that?
What are you having for Super Tuesday / Fat Tuesday?
Yeah, tonight I'll be making lots of pancakes!! I'm going to try them with creme de marrons - I once had a crepe in Paris with this and it was beautiful. If that doesn't work out, I'll stick to the classics - sugar and lemon or chocolate spread
