Vietnam 2: good dim sum in Vermont

MightyFrog - thanks for the detailed report, I live around the corner and I've been meaning to give this place a try.

Burlington, Vermont - Sad News

great article in this weeks 7days about the closing.

Burlington VT, and surrounding areas?

Can't argue with any of the above recs but have to throw my hat in for the Kitchen Table in Richmond - I think it is the best restaurant in the area - might not be too offbeat but it does have great local food, killer service, and a neat farmhouse atmosphere.

Hi All! Thanks for all of the recs - I am going to put them to use, but unfortunately not on this trip - I had to re-route for speed because of a new job I am taking. Thanks again!!

Best Seafood/Fish Monger in SF?

You will have to drive over to Berkeley but I have always been happy with the service and products at Monterey Fish Market - they are big on sustainability and also serve many of the restaurants in the Bay Area.

thanks for the tips mgd323! I will check those links out!

Fish & Farm

I'd go with Robert's rec - it was an ok dinner, not remarkable. For the same price I know I could have hit up a bunch of different SF spots with much better food and ambiance. If you are only in town for a short stay I'd go somewhere else.

Lunch in Oklahoma City

Hi All - I am on a cross country trip between CA and NY - looking to make a pit-stop in Oklahoma City for lunch - I'd love something that is local/regional - I am thinking BBQ but am up for anything. Your help is appreciated!! Sue

Dinner in Amarillo

Hi All, I am planning a cross-country trip between CA and NY and will be staying overnight in Amarillo (Quality Inn West, 6800 I40 West Service Rd). I've looked through past threads, but I would be interested in any updated info - I'd like to try local specialties - I am guessing steak? Any thoughts and recs are greatly appreciated!!

Dinner in ABQ

Hi All, I'm on a cross-country trip from the Bay Area to New York and will be traveling through Albuquerque & Santa Fe. I've been looking at the boards and found a bunch of great recs for SF (thanks!) - I need a dinner rec for ABX - and I would love something that is local/New Mexican.
Also - I've read a bunch about enchiladas (green vs red) as the big thing to order - is that touristy? What should I be looking for?
Thanks! Sue

Any good bars near Delfina in San Francisco to stop at while we wait for a table?

I would echo Robert's rec for Monk's Kettle - but best to get their early, it fills up pretty quick.

SF - Boulevard or Slanted Door?

Brutal choice! These are two of my favorites - They are close enough together that you could check them both out - I would head to Slanted Door for a drink at their bar (maybe a light app) and then zip over to Boulevard for dinner.

Sonoma Wineries

I am a big fan of Iron Horse - which is a bit off the beaten path and has an outdoor tasting room with a great view. I would also check out Unti - I always have a great experience in their tasting room.

Thanks for the notes on Oregon's choice - I am heading up to Portland in a couple of weeks so I will pick some up!

Status of Four Barrel?

As of this morning they are still temporary out in the back alley (behind 375 Valencia)

Best Canned Tuna - July 2008

Hi All,
Well we did the taste-off on Sunday and the Ortiz brands ended up being the big winner - even with their hefty price tag.
I posted our report here: www.feelgoodeats.com
Feel free to send me any thoughts or questions.
Thanks for your help!!
Sue

Too much of a good thing?

Your itinerary looks great - I had a great meal at Farmhouse and am heading up to Ubuntu in the next couple of weeks after hearing great reviews. You might like to try Mustard's or Cindy's Backstreet Kitchen for something more casual/fun but still interesting - and you can't go wrong grabbing a burger at Taylor's.

Camino Oakland - Report

Hi All,

Wanted to post a quick report on Camino in Oakland - here is an older thread that covers Camino since it opened in mid-spring: http://chowhound.chow.com/topics/511819

We scheduled an early dinner so we could see a movie at the Grand Lake Theater (it's only a few blocks down the road) and their were only a few diners seated. I was really impressed with the decor, especially the wood oven in the open kitchen space. The dining area is open, with rows of long benches (looks like former pews) -the tables are a bit close together, but nothing near the worst I have seen. As we ate the restaurant filled up, I initially worried that it would get very loud (open dining area, open kitchen, lots of wood) but the ambiance remained pleasant through 7 or so.

We were very happy with the service - our server was friendly and engaging but mostly let us be to chat - water, wine refilled periodically, everything was cleared well. For a restaurant that is fairly new I think they are doing something right. I got kind of a Chez Panisse vibe with the staff - especially the chefs in the open kitchen, it was very calm, everyone seemed pretty happy. We commented that it almost looked like they were cooking at home.

On to the food - the menu is limited, with about 4 starters and 3 mains - I like that (do a few things really well) but I can see that may be a problem for others. The menu is not up on their website yet - so you really can't plan ahead.

Wine list was short but interesting - with a lot of bottles in the 30s which I think fits the atmosphere of the place. They have a real deal espresso machine - didn't get coffee so I am not sure if the bartenders have barista skills (would love to hear more on that...)

There was only three of us so we didn't get through all of the menu - we ordered a tomato salad and a sardine starter - both were presented beautifully and I think executed very well. For dinner we had two orders of the duck and one order of the albacore - I was extremely satisfied with my albacore dish, with a generous protein portion combined with peppers and a saffron laced sauce - very colorful, very tasty. I couldn't get too many tastes of the duck because my friends were too busy eating to share - so that is a good sign.

There were a few notes on the previous thread that the portions were small - I didn't find that to be the case last night and finished up dinner pleasantly full. I am ashamed to admit that we skipped dessert in favor of movie theater junk (but you have to do that sometimes) so I can't comment on dessert.

Overall, I would go back - especially as a fun weeknight place to hang out if you live in the East Bay. I think that if you are a fan of Wood Tavern this might be a nice fit (especially if you can't get into the Wood Tavern). Hope this helps or sparks further conversation.

~ Sue

Best Canned Tuna - July 2008

Hi All,

I am interested in thoughts on the best canned tuna available - there was a thread posted but it's about a year old so I thought I would see if there is something new/different (old thread = http://www.chowhound.com/topics/306903)

Basically I would be interested in hearing about your favorite brands, where you buy, what the tuna is packed in, and any other info.

Thanks for the tips!
Sue

Fresh Gnocchi in SF

The Pasta Shop in Berkeley - they also sell at the SF Farmer's Market on Saturday's but I am not sure if they always have gnocchi (they are also in the Whole Foods in the East Bay.
