If you moved to the Palos Verdes area, where would you end up eating?

a great place to hang out is the little restaurant in back of Rolling Hills estates Bristol Farms, called Cafe Cego, they have nice breakfast, you can sit outside and read or hangout, and they have excellent dinners and lunches too.

Charlie palmer @ Bloomingdales

Went to the new Charlie Palmers in Costa Mesa, in the South Coast Plaza shopping center Saturday night with my wife and another couple. You can park right in front of the restaurant, don't get sucked into the $7 valet. The room is beautiful, service attentive,(although our waiter got a little too familiar for my taste)I had the Salumi plate which was very good, but not as good as Fraiche, the stuffed Quail was excellent, I asked for crispy, and they made it perfect. Wife had flatiron steak, which was good, friends wife had a carrot soup which was very good, and a seabass which she loved, friend had octopus salad which he said was great, and Duck with honey sauce which I tasted, and can testify I will get that next time. Corkage a bit high at $25, but we drank an 86' Margaux so it was worth it. Total with tip was $160 a couple, not bad for a restaurant I rated a 9 out of 10.

Strange Pairings that Taste Uncommonly Good

Most of the replies here were things you just throw together like peanut butter and mustard, my entry is a little more complicated. Opus restaurant serves an appetizer that is Octopus and pork belly, the pork is fried into crisp little squares and a great sauce makes it a dish to die for.

wine bar?

If you want to try a real wine bar, not a restaurant with a big wine by the glass list, try the Gourmet Cheese and wine bar, in the southbay galleria in Redondo beach, it is 2nd floor of the mall next to Nordstroms. 20 white and 20 red wines by the glass, several interesting flights, incredible ambiance, Panini sandwiches, salads, meat and cheese plates, and unforgettable Olive bread. 1815 Hawthorne blvd Redondo Beach, 310-214-2122
To get an idea of the place try their website www.gourmetcheeseandwinebar.com

Fraiche or All' Angelo?

If you are looking for Italian, why try anywhere except Valentino's, the benchmark for Italian food in L.A. very expensive, but you said, no problem.

visiting Pala resort [San Diego]

We just spent a couple days at Pala resort near Temecula, it has a Casino, and a no smoking gambling room. The steakhouse there is called the Oak room, and it compares with any steakhouse in vegas, in fact much better that the Wynn steakhouse. I had a bone in ribeye steak with Scallops, that they called surf and turf, the steak must have been at least 16 oz. and the scallops were great also, the steak was tender and flavorful. As an appetizer my friend and I shared a seafood tower for two, it had two of each of the lobster tails and claws, 6 huge shrimp, 6 oysters, crab legs, and ceviche, it was not cheap, but much less than Vegas, $65 for the surf and turf, (the steak by itself was $38) $21 each for the seafood tower. Fantastic service, and nice ambiance. The rooms at Pala were great with stall showers and a a great view for $119 a night, Casino was very smokey, although they have a no smoking room you still have to walk through a very smokey casino to get there.

the best SANDWICH in (Los Angeles) period.

This is the greatest sandwich I have tasted, forget the pastrami,Salami,or corned beef. This place is not even a restaurant, but a Spanish food importer and manufacturer. The sandwich is Serano Ham, roasted pepper, and Spanish cheese on a fresh baked roll, you have to tast it to believe it.

Redondo Beach, need recommendation for cousins get together

Go for the Chez, the food is great, and has something for everyone, from the most gourmet to their great meatloaf. Very close to P.V.Chez Melange 1716 Pacific Coast Hiway it is a very nice restaurant, but not fancy fancy, you will love it. I hope the 4 month old is a sleeper. 310-540-1222. reservations recommended.

Restaurants you love that are rarely mentioned on Chowhound

I agree on Chez Melange, I don't know why they don't get much love from the hounds, their loyal customers love the place. I have been eating there since the day it opened, and have had some of my best meals there. The service is efficient and friendly, the food is from good to excellent, and although the ambience is not the Bel-air hotel, it is still special occasion nice. They are very wine friendly, and have a great winelist, also teach cooking classes, foodie club, and wine club.

Palos Verde Dining for New Yorker Chowhounds!

I can't believe no one mentioned Cafe Cego, it is a small cozy place on the Brick Walk in back of the Rolling Hills Bristol Farms, the Owner Gerhart Moser, is a German, and adds a few Germen dishes to the menu. My favorites are the Crab curry soup, the beef straganoff made with filet mignon, and his famous chocolate souffle.

Petite Sirah

My favorites are Consilience from Santa Barbara and the Hard to find but great, Estrella creek 3 M's, if you can't find it, they have it at Gourmet Cheese and wine bar/mkt in the south bay galleria, Hawthorne and Artesia.

Tulipe

I went to Tulip many times and always had a great meal, the setting was beautiful, but comfortable. I always wonder why restaurants like Spage last forever, and some other great restaurants run their course and expire.

Breakfast in South Bay?

The only place to go for breakfast in the southbay is Chez Melange, On PCH and Palos verdes blvd. 310 540-1222. The menu is eclectic, something for everyone, and not the same old thing. Try it, and you will not go anywhere else.

Californian Wine Bar?

For a real wine bar, not a restaurant masquerading as a wine bar, try the Gourmet cheese and wine bar in the South Bay Galleria on Hawthorne blvd and Artesia in Redondo beach.
40 wines by the glass beautiful ambiance, and flights of wine, plus pub grub. 310-214-2122.

Viva La Pasta

All the Viva la Pastas mentioned are gone, and no great loss. In Palos Verdes area try Neals in San pedro on 5th st. or the new Frascati in Ave of the Peninsula, or Il Toscano in Torrance on Hawthorne, in Hillside village.
