What are you baking these days? May 2012

A few weeks ago I made Melissa D'Arabian's lemon tea cake and some raspberry sauce to go with it. I'm no baker, but it was easy to make and my friends loved it.

MOTHER'S DAY BRUNCH [Novi, West Bloomfield, MI area]

Last year we went to It' a Matter of Taste and it was pretty good. I'd like to try some place new in the Novi, West Bloomfield area. Any ideas?

Beef Stroganoff left out overnight - safe to eat?

Toss it out - I also had food poisoning and spent 4 days in the hospital.

Thanks - La Herradura is on my list to try!

Easy and elegant fish recipe?

I've had success with baked fish covered with breadcrumbs. Preheat the oven to 375 degres. Mix together panko breadrumbs, crushed garlic, salt, pepper and vegetable oil. Spread the crumb mix on the fish and bake for 12 -15 minutes dependiing on the thickness of the fish. The breadcrums will be a beautiful deep golden brown and the fish will be perfectly cooked. Believe me, you and your guests will love it.

Thanks - sounds like you're having a lot of fun!

Things you want to try making

My father was Hungarian and he also made the plum dumplings in the late summer when the Italian plums were cheap and in season. Any good Hungarian cook book should have a recipe.

Delivery Tips in NYC (from New York Times)

I agree - very stingy. I used to live in the suburbs and never tipped less than 20%.

Help with a pork shoulder roast

It's 5 PM and my pork braise is done. I browned the "roasts" , removed them from the pot, added onions, celery and carrots and 2 Tablespoons of Tomato paste. I deglazed with wihite wine, added chicken stock and braised the pork. I had to remove quite a bit of fat from the sauce but it's delicious. Can't believe the pork cooked so quickly.

Thanks for all the helpful suggestions.

Thanks kengh and wyogal, but there's not enough time. It's 3:15 now and my friends are coming at 6. I decided to try to braise. I'll post the results.

What temperature and how long should I cook it?

Help with a pork shoulder roast

I'm making mashed sweet potatoes and collard greens. I made the greens yesterday and the potatoes will take no time at all.

Thanks for your suggestion.

Help with a pork shoulder roast

I think I'm in trouble. I have two friends coming for dinner tonight and I bought a 3 lb. pork shoulder roast. I decided to try to butterfly it and stuff it with breadcrums, parsley and garlic. Sounds good, right? However when I cut open the roast it kind of separated into big chucks. I managed to make 2 largish roasts (about 1 - 1/2 lbs. each) and 1 smallish piece of meat (about 1 lb.) How do I cook these considering that pork shoulder should be cooked low and slow? I need some advice.

Viewer Pet Peeves

I don't mind her daughter. Although she is not at ease before the camera, she usually has something interesting to contribute. What I don't like is Lidia's son, Joe, who always looks like he's appearing under duress and would rather be anywhere else.

Nung’s Kitchen - Thai food in Troy [DTW]

I agree. The food was great and so was the company.

Bob, it's Taqueria San Jose.

Bob, I don't know the name of the place - but it's in a little strip mall on Elizabeth Lake Rd. across from a golf course. It's Taqueria -----(something) and patronized by Mexicans. They have an all Spanish menu and every day have specials which are great. I believe it's authentically Mexican rather than tex-mex because of all the Mexicans eating there.

Hi Chowhounds - I'm looking for a good Mexican place in the Novi/FH area. I know a good place in Waterford, but that's a little too far. Any suggestions will be welcomed.

What is your "go to" meal when there is too much month left at the end of the paycheque - past or present

Chicken livers
Turkey hash made from turkey legs
Cuban black beans and rice with cole slaw
Fish pie made with the cheapest fish
Salmon burgers made with canned salmon

Name Brand Or Generic?

I generally buy generic except for Folger's coffee, Hellman's mayo, Dawn detergent, Heinz ketchup. I think Kroger's crushed tomatoes are a big bargain and make a great pasta sauce.

Something different this weekend. Anybody been to these two? - DTW

Hi - I had the buffet lunch at the Bombay Grille a new weeks ago and liked it. I usually eat at Rumalee's on 12 mile in Farmington Hills and I liked the Bombay Grille better. The food was good and the room is large compared to Rumalee's.

Mitzi's in Farmington Hills/Lefty's in Livonia( DTW MI)

i'm also from the east - new york - and i've found that the Chinese take out here is very hit and miss. If you like Dim Sum Shangra-la on Orchard Lake Rd and Maple Rd in Farmington Hills is great. The best Chinese food I've found is Szechuan Canton on Ford Rd. in Canton. It's a bit of a ride but when you need some good Chinese food it's worth it. On the other hand, the Indian food here is outstanding. Try Rumalees on 12 mile rd & Middlebelt for their buffet lunch. Can't help you on the steak.

Lusting for livers, from chickens. How best we do them? Kept whole, not pate'.

I'm leaving right now to buy some chicken livers! I like to lightly flour them with s&p and quickly saute in veg oil and deglaze with red wine vinegar. The vinegar loses some of its sharpness but is still sharp enough to balance the richness of the livers.

What to do with a large frozen turkey leg

Should I brown it first or add onions, garlic, etc.?

But wait ... there's more ... what are your experiences with "as seen on TV" cookware?

I used one of these knives to shorten a Christmas tree once when I lived in an apartment. It worked well.
