Best burger in Mon/OC?

Looks like there's quite a debate about this very topic going on here too:

Best burger in Mon/OC?

First of all, I REALLY want to thank everyone for the GREAT responses so far! I now have a huge list of places to try!

007, I checked out 5 Guys a couple weeks ago (wish I'd known the difference between the regular and mini in advance!). The burger was very good, but I was very frustrated with the wait. I was dining alone and it took nearly 20 minutes for a simple "fast food" burger!

Anyone know if that's normal, or did I just happen to have an unusually long wait?

Basil T's Red Bank - Thoughts?

I know I'm resurrecting an old topic here, but I had to share my Basil T's (Red Bank) experience from the weekend.

Being Valentine's weekend, I figured a reservation couldn't hurt. I arrived at 750 for my 800 reservation and was told that they were still waiting to seat their 730 reservations. So I went to the bar and had a mediocre beer. (Not terrible, but didn't really stand apart from other mediocre microbrews). Finally got seated at 840.

Took a good 10 minutes to get a waitress. After taking our orders, the waitress came back after about 10 minutes and said that it would be at least half an hour because the kitchen was backed up and we could order a salad to share if we like (note, she didn't OFFER a salad to keep us happy, she told us we could BUY a salad).

When the food arrived, it was good. No complaints in the food department.

When the check came, the real fun started...I had a $50 gift card that I used for the $41 check (two entrees, waters to drink). The waitress took the gift card and returned a few mins later, "My manager ran this through for the full $50, if you would like to just leave the rest as the tip, that's fine".

"I'm sorry?" I said.

She repeated herself, "if you would like to leave the rest as a tip, I'm ok with that". Well of course you are! That's more than a 20% tip! I politely told her that I would like the change, please.

Taking into account the long wait, the expensive food, and the average-at-best service, I was shocked. Even if it had been the best meal I had ever had with the friendliest and most attentive service in the world, I would still be very offended if the staff, manager or waiter, were to presume that I would leave that much of a tip.

It was a very disappointing overall experience.

Jersey shore beer bars?

There's a great bar in the Tropicana in AC (Firewaters), and I went to another in Brooklyn this past weekend (Mugs Ale House). Both have great beer selections. A lot on tap, and dozens in bottles, far beyond the usual mass market "lagers" that most bars have. Does anybody know if there are any good beer bars in the Monmouth/Ocean County areas?

Thanks!!

Best burger in Mon/OC?

First of all, much thanks to everyone in my "New to Brick" thread for the suggestions and warm welcomes, I have many more "must try" places now!

One thing I've always had a hard time finding is a decent burger. Most places just flatten ground beef into a patty cook it up (usually over cook it) and drown it in condiments (that is of course, if it's not frozen to start with). Any suggestions for the best burgers locally?

Anybody have experience with 5 Guys? I've never been and, as I said before, I'd much rather put cash into pockets of locals as opposed to chains. But if their burgers are good, I'm willing to give it a try.

Suggestions are greatly appreciated.

Slightly off topic geographically but on topic culinarily, if you're ever traveling through CT make a side trip to stop by J. Timothy's in Plainville. They're well known for their wings, but their burgers have rocked my world on a couple occasions!

Sonic Drive-In in Waretown.

The Sonic people are marketing geniuses. Even though they were a regional chain, they've advertised on national cable channels for years, creating a buzz and a demand in areas that didn't have Sonic. So Sonic finally comes to a new area, and the place is packed. I admit, I fell for it.

However, I went twice, and will probably not be returning. The first time, the service was extremely slow and the food arrived cold. I chalked it up to inexperienced staff, and didn't make a big deal out of it. The second time, I opted to eat at one of the picnic tables. Once again, a friend and I were left waiting for quite a while. This time though, the food wasn't only cold, but my friend's order was wrong, and the "corrected" version was clearly half-hearted. The first time he ordered a sandwich with no shredded lettuce and no mustard, it came with both. The re-order was clearly the FIRST sandwich with the mustard and lettuce scraped off (with remnants of both remaining, and even colder by that point).

Obviously, one location doesn't speak for the whole chain, but it definitely helps to shape your opinion. Also, sure it sounds like a novelty, but while I was sitting in my car eating the first time I didn't quite see what was so fun about eating greasy, messy food in a car.

New to Brick. Suggestions?

Thanks much, shoremom! I had Pete & Elda's pizza at a pizza party here at the office a couple weeks ago, I practically ate two whole pies! Loved it!

Thanks for your input!

New to Brick. Suggestions?

Thanks for the suggestions! With that ringing endorsement, I'll definitely be checking out Mexico Lindo! I've eaten at the Famous Dave's on Rt 1 in New Brunswick, and agree with your opinion of the brisket. I'll definitely put your other suggestions on my to-do list, thanks again!

New to Brick. Suggestions?

Hi, a board newbie here. I moved to Brick not long ago and would love suggestions on reasonably priced, local restaurants (i.e. in line price-wise with the mass market chains). I tend to like ethnic food (Mexican, Italian, etc), exceptional American food (really good burgers, pizza, wings, etc), but I'm willing to try new things. I don't mind chains but I love to discover unique places and I prefer to put my money in the pockets of locals, not corporations. Any suggestions are greatly appreciated! I live in Brick and work in Ocean Twp. So anything around or between those areas are fair game.

One specific place I've wondered about, does anyone have any experience with the little Mexican place on Burnt Tavern Rd at the intersection Burnsville/Lanes Mill? I can't think of the name, but it's right there at the intersection, I think next to a day care place.

Thanks!
