Taco fillings

I had just read about this too on this blog, and thought it was a great idea, especially for kids...(When my children were little we loved tacos, crunchy shell and all, but I always worried they wouldn't chew it up into small enough pieces....this eliminates the fear of that)

What's for Dinner #186 - OLD

Looks lovely BC. Any chance you would let me know who your butcher is? I get cooked porchetta at Vincentina's in Vaughan, but would love to get my hands on some to cook at home. TIA

Anyone seen the December 2012 issue of Donna Hay Magazine?

I amd searching out the Dec issue of Donna Hay and have checked my local Chapters today - they indicated they did not receive their British imports (I know it is Australian) this week, so check back next week. I really hate waiting and was wondering if anyone has seen it elsewhere.

TIA

What cookbooks have you bought recently, or are you lusting after? November 2012 edition [OLD]

While browsing through Chapters this week, I noticed a new ATK Book - The Complete America's Test Kitchen TV Show Cookbook 2001-2012. I didn't have much time to look through it - has anyone had a chance to review it?

LCBO Food & Drink Magazine - Holiday Edition 2012

I picked mine up in Georgetown on Nov. 7. Funny, the display stand was empty of them - I asked and received some lame excuse that there were more in the back, but I would have to come back tomorrow. Nope. I used to do some part-time work at that LCBO years back and have not missed a Food and Drink since they were bilingual (eons ago). I insisted I get one! Brampton also had them last week. You have to get them quick as they do disappear fast. Incidently, the editor's note indicates this is "their biggest issue yet".

Best Cranberry Sauce Recipe

Love this one - been a favourite for years

Christmas Cranberry Sauce

12 oz bag fresh cranberries
1 medium orange, zested and juiced
2 tblsp Grand Marnier
2 tblsp Port (optional)
¾ cup sugar
Add extra orange juice to fresh juice to make ¾ cup.

Mix juice, zest, Grand Marnier, and sugar in pot over medium heat, and add cranberries. Reduce heat once boiling. Simmer and reduce for about 25 minutes. Serve right away or cool first.

Some times I will add some dried cranberries as well as a cinnamon stick.

looking for summer corn recipe for tgiving to bring

I make a sauteed corn dish, which my family loves. It started with this recipe, which is a rice dish (love it too) but have made it just as the sauteed vegetables. No matter how much I make, it always gets devoured.

CuisineArt 2012 - Alton, ON

FYI - I just found out about this wonderful event in the beautiful hills of Alton....July 20-22, 2012

http://altonmill.ca/visit/events/Cuis...

Delicious Art, Beautiful Food

Twenty-five Alton Mill artists, 15 area chefs and 11 local producers of wine, beer, cider, lemonade and ginger syrup will be your guides to a delicious weekend of fine art, tastings, demos and cook-offs.

The concept is simple: Watch the chefs in action; watch artists in action. Discover local colour, creativity and flavour!

The Main Stage in the Annex Courtyard will include hourly chef demonstrations, but things really heat up at 2 pm daily when the Eat Local Caledon sponsored cook-offs take place, featuring an entirely local menu before a live audience. Saturday’s match features Philip Dewar from Souylve Caribbean Foods–recently featured on the Food Network’s You Gotta Eat Here, and Owen Vulpe from What’s Cookin’ Catering. On Sunday Gilles Roche of Gourmandissimo catering steps up against Chef Thorntin Macdonald of the Belfountain Inn and Bistro Riviere.

Throughout the Mill's studios and galleries there will be tasting stations full of cool drinks and fresh fare. In addition to the ever popular Toonie Tastings, this year we are introducing a Passport to Taste, which costs $10 and includes 6 tastings.

Cuisine and canvas make a perfect pairing when artist Paul Morin (Studio 215) and chef Owen Vulpe join forces for "Sound, Sight and Appetite," a demonstration of the creative process. Watch as they each create a masterpiece -- one with paint, the other with food. Meanwhile in the Bartlett Gallery, "Art Song" features artist Lynda Clare Grant who will paint to the music of pianist Lou Pinto.

Cuisine-Art Kick-off: Join us Friday July 20 at 5:30 pm in the Annex Courtyard, prior to Humber River Shakespeare Co's presentation of Macbeth. Dinner options from several participating chefs are availalbe for sale; there will be a cash bar and live music. (Theatre tickets are available in advance here.)

I'll be there to check it out. A good friend tells me you can wander about, checking out various chef demos, etc. complete with cocktail in hand.

popcorn recipe

A few years ago, I came across a recipe from Rachael Ray....I know....but couldn't be easier or more delicious. In a large pot add 1/4 c oil, 1/4 cup sugar and 1/2 cup popcorn, cover, lid slightly ajar to allow steam to escape pop. Delicious. Make it all the time.

What cookbooks have you bought lately? Summer edition, part 1 [OLD]

I just purchased Desserts by the Yard at Chapters (Brampton) for $14.99. I was so excited as I almost bought it on Amazon a few months ago for about twice as much, after reading about it often on here. I have had the Secrets of Baking since it first came out, so was glad to add this to my (ever)-growing collection. Also, I immediately thought of Breadcrumbs when I saw this yesterday.

Call McCall's - I purchased a box of the Barry Callebaut chocolate sticks at the Warehouse (Dixie/Eglinton area) about a month ago. Just had pain au chocolate for Mother's Day. For the life of me, I can't remember the price but I believe it was a 2kg box.

Milton, ON - good places to eat?

Not too much in Milton that I know of, however, if others are recommending Mississauga and Brampton, there is a really nice Japanese Thia place, Spoon and Fork on Trafalgar Road, just south of Dundas. Not too too far from Milton and they have a delicious "All You Can Taste" Menu.

What should I do with cube steak?

Mmm, Rouladen. I learned from my German mother-in-law (and from what I have read over the years there are a number of variations) but when I crave rouladen, this is how I was taught - take insde round cutlets (or cube steak in a pinch) slather those pieces with regular mustard, s&p, add a piece of bacon, a pickle spear and some stale-ish rye bread and sliced onions. Roll and secure with a toothpick. Now brown, really brown, all round and then add some water or stock. Simmer 1-1/2 to 2 hours, remove and make gravy with the liquid. Serve with spaetzle, dumplings or mashed potatoes. MMMMM, I think I want some now....
