AVOCE - a disappointment

We went to avoce recently for our wedding anniversary celebration. We were really looking forward to it because we had not been out to dinner for a long time ever since we had a baby girl. We were at Avoce a few years ago and enjoyed our experience and always wanted to go back. Sadly, we made the wrong choice in going back.

We made a reservation for 6:45pm initially but had to change it later. They gave us all sorts of grief before finally caving in after we literally had to beg them and after several calls. Later, at dinner, we could not help but notice that there were 3-4 two-person tables that were vacant all through the time we were there. WHAT THE F*CK is that!? In this time when we are seeing restaurants close down all around us because of the bad state of the economy, there is no place for the kind of pretensions they are trying to project. WAKE UP! We are not in 2007!

We ordered sardines and fried dough filled with cheese for appetizers and they were good. The olive oil and balsamic vinegar/majoram that came with the bread was surprisingly good as well. The pasta that we ordered was the low light of the evening. We ordered cheese and prosciutto filled pocket pasta and pasta with rabbit. they were both so salty that they were almost inedible.

we had our concerns when we heard that their chef left a little while ago, but were re-assured by some of the reviews that came out since then. e.g. bruni, etc. Maybe they had an off night, but I dont plan to go back any time soon.

Bf meeting the parents...recos needed!

I find the seats rather uncomfortable and may not help facilitate conversation. also, I find it rather crowded. Morever, the wait for a table is quite long.

Fresh Direct: Favorite heat and eat or ready to cook item to get

Hi
Fresh Direct has been upping their choices of ready to heat or cook items; i wonder whether anyone has tried their soups, kabobs, pastas, rosa mexicano or michael stark dinners.
I love their Tang's whole wheat soba noodles. I eat it with a soba noodle soy base I bought from a japanese grocery store.
I recently discovered they sell cooked brown rice and am looking forward to ewcwiving my first order.

Your choice for Trader Joe's BEST item

i was not able to find many of the items mentioned here, at the NYC trader joe; like the tuna and green curry, indian simmer sauce, brown rice ball, ready to cook plantains etc.

Favorite thing to get from Trader Joe's or Trader Joe's wine store

Hi
I was wondering what everyone's favorite things to get from either trader joe's or its wine store. My two favorite are the soy chicken nuggets from the frozen food section and the vinho verde portuguese light white wine from the wine store.

Best packaged bacon?

I like Westside market for their prepared hot foods. My only gripe is that they have everything else except for a well stocked meat department.

Good freshly roasted coffee to buy and make at home?

My favorite coffee is the puerto rican Yauco. I had it at Gramercy Tavern and was able to eventually track it down on the internet. They sell it at coffeebeandirect.com and coffeefool.com

Best packaged bacon?

I often see fresh bacon, in sealed plastic wrapping, for sale at Union square. Would you recommend either flying pigs or hawthorne farms over the other?

overrated restaurants

hi ChefJune, regarding Tocqueville, we had dinner there recently. While I found my appetizer, Uni with angel hair carbonara, heavenly with creative flavors, I found the suckling pig special for main course disappointing, especially at a price of $48. My wife's foie gras and caviar for appetizer was so-so while her breaded and fried lamb main course was not memorable. I think with the high price they charge, they could do better, especially with the main courses. Maybe the market lunch is the way to go but I can't leave work during the weekday.

overrated restaurants

Cafe Gray, i think, is overated. The saltiest food I have ever had, and they had the audacity to charge the high price for it.
Tocqueville is overated in that their food is not justified by the high price they charge.

Steak houses : Crafsteak, Ben and Jack's, Blair-Perrone, or Quality Meats?

It sounds like the unanimous opinion on Crafsteak is that it serves overpriced steaks. Also, it does not seem like anyone has a strong opinion on Quality meats.
