Bel Campo

Fries were okay - kind of limp and not seasoned. Not terrible but far from great. I love good fries and these were not worth wasting the calories on. Maybe this was just an off night as I know many people think it's a great restaurant

Bel Campo

I sent back my meat (rarely do that but it was truly inedible) and ordered the burger. It was better than the other two entrees but nothing special.

Where to eat - foodies from NYC?

Love L.A. but not sure how anyone can say the food is better than New York. Not even close.

meals in Newport Beach

I always enjoy The Crab Cooker - no frills, old school seafood. Great chowder and fresh fish. Get there early as it gets very crowded and they don't take reservations.

Republique on La Brea is wonderful. Great flavors and everything just works. Pretty room too. Agree with Maude if you can get in. Excellent tasting menu based around one key ingredient that's featured in every course. Enjoy L.A.!

Bel Campo

Really awful dinner at Bel Campo in Santa Monica. I like grass fed beef and I know it can taste stronger than regular meat but the steak was so strong it tasted more like liver than steak. The beef tips were almost raw and not even lukewarm even though they were supposed to be hot. Even the French Fries were mediocre at best. Our waiter was nice and the plum tart for dessert (which he offered on the house) was very good.
Doubt I will ever go back.

South Jersey Seafood Shack

visiting this summer and I would love to find a great, casual place for good seafood. Like Oyster Creek but with good food - the kind of place you find in New England. Any area from Atlantic City to Ocean City, Sea Isle etc

Looking for some good restaurant mushroom dishes

The stuffed mushrooms at The Rainbow on Sunset in WeHo are wonderful.

Saturday Lunch

Thanks all. Love the view at The Huntley! I think we are going to MDR Hotel. Food isn't special but it's better than most in the area and it's lovely to sit outside.
Happy Weekend.

South Jersey Shore

We love to drive to other areas but Wildwood may be a little too far. Thanks!

Saturday Lunch

Any ideas for a pleasant lunch with longtime family friends on Saturday afternoon? Westside is preferable but we are open - good food - nothing too ethnic. Love the patio at Gracias Madre but not sure they'd like the food.

South Jersey Shore

I ate there years ago and I didn't love it. Anything new that's good? Even in other towns?

the galley in santa monica

The steak used to be fantastic but has declined in recent years. Fun place with a nautical, funky vibe. The chowder, salad and steamed clams are all good. Decent shrimp scampi too. Good happy hour also

Going to Cal Phil Concert at Santa Anita on Saturday. Any ideas for dinner first? Not Asian or Mexican.

Fantastic Greek - near LAX

Aliki Greek Taverna is a real find. I have been here numerous times and I have tried many items on the menu. Everything is always fresh, well seasoned and delicious. Tonight I had a wonderful salad with cucumber, green peppers, feta cheese, red onion and perfectly seasoned sautéed chicken. The dressing was perfect. Their moussaka both traditional and the high protein version with eggplant and ground beef are wonderful. The chicken kabobs and the stuffed chicken are delicious. My husband is a fan of their gyros. Pricing is very fair and the waiters and chefs are all super nice. Aliki never disappoints.

Who's "Mary", and why does Restaurant Week seem to be eating her chickens?

Mary's Chicken tends to be more moist and tastier than other chicken. Of course it depends on how it is prepared.

Rockenwagner West LA Closed

I tried to meet someone there last week only to find it had closed. Too bad as I really enjoyed their breakfast and lunch. Nothing extraordinary but super fresh. They never really gave it a chance. We need more breakfast and lunch options close to Barrington.

South Jersey Shore

Planning our annual visit to Ventnor (from L.A.) in August.
Would love to find a few new places to try.
Especially love seafood and basic Italian but open to all types of cuisine.
Even a seafood shack type place. Love the feel of Oyster Creek but never had a good meal there.
Anywhere from Atlantic City, Ventnor, Margate, Brigantine and Somer's Point to Sea Isle, Stone Harbor, Avalon...

These are our tried and true and would love to add to the list -
Steve and Cookie's
Doc's Oyster House
Smith's Clam Bar
Crabby's for hard shell crabs
Tony's for pizza
The White House for subs
Angelo's - although not as good as it used to be

Thank You!

Best Breakfast in LA?

The Griddle in Hollywood is not too far from Beverly Hills. The Pancakes and French Toast are wonderful as well as the eggs, ham steak and potatoes. Lines look long but usually move quickly. The portions are large so you may not want to eat lunch that day.

Venice updates

Thank You Cookie Monster. I actually liked Canali but it will be fun to have a new restaurant in this area with so many mediocre choices. Sounds interesting...

Most underrated LA restaurants

Aliki Taverna by LAX. It's a somewhat divey place that backs up to a seedy motel but the Mediterranean food is as good as anyplace in L.A. Everything is very fresh and super tasty. They are super nice and it's a great place to pick up hummus, tabouli and other dips. They sell their dips at farmers markets all over the city.

Long Beach Breakfast

Thanks so much kobzvnsq814 - The Breakfast Bar was delicious and exactly what I was looking for. Love that I can always count on Chowhound!

Past favorites from the 1970's

Interesting Beachercomberboy - Charmer's was my dad's favorite restaurant. I haven't thought about it in years.I loved Scandia and I had no I idea the Petersons bought it. Thanks for the trivia!

Past favorites from the 1970's

Curious if anyone has been to these. I think they are all from the 70's but a couple may be from the 80's.

Jack's at the Beach - Santa Monica
Cafe California - Santa Monica
Gladstones when it was good - Santa Monica Canyon
Great American Food & Beverage Company - Santa Monica
Charmers - Venice
Meyera - Venice (vegetarian that was way ahead of its time)
Martoni's - Hollywood
Butterfield's - West Hollywood
Scandia - West Hollywood
Nick's Fish-market - West Hollywood
Famous Amos - West Hollywood - Their fresh from the oven cookies never made it home.
Swiss Echo - West L.A.

Long Beach Breakfast

I have an early breakfast meting in downtown Long Beach on Pine. Anything decent for breakfast? Doesn't need to be memorable, just good.

TLT

We have eaten at TLT in Westwood several times. Most of the items are delicious and quite flavorful. It's easy, quick and reasonable. For me though, TLT is one of those places that I cannot eat at often as the flavors are so bold.

Colony Cafe: Closed

Lilly Tartikoff opened this restaurant for her daughter Calla to run after Calla was in a near fatal car accident. The decor was patterned after Lilly's beach house. Sad to see Colony Cafe go.

Med Cafe - Marina del Rey

Once again I really enjoyed dinner at Med Cafe in Marina del Rey. It's a comfortable, unpretentious restaurant on Washington Blvd close to the beach. Their Mediterranean food is light, fresh and really tasty. The red pepper hummus with freshly baked pita and crisp vegetables is wonderful. I typically order the chicken kabob which come with white meat chicken, a salad with perfect dressing, rice and a wonderful garlic sauce. In this area where it seems that many restaurants rely on the view or location Med Cafe is a nice change.

Suggestions for out of towners

If you have a car it may be nice to get out to Malibu - Malibu Farm at the end of the pier is quite nice for lunch - delicious burgers and salads. You are not far from Republique - fantastic food in a gorgeous setting. Gracias Madre is in West Hollywood - vegan Mexican on a beautiful patio, very L.A. The Ivy on Robertson is one of my favorites although it doesn't always get great reviews on this board. Nothing unique or innovative but very good Seafood and American standards in a lovely setting. Gjelina in Venice is quintessential L.A. - try to sit on the patio as inside gets loud. Their salad with tuna is the best! Spago in Beverly Hills or The Polo Lounge at Beverly Hills Hotel are consistent and classic L.A. restaurants. Drinks at Beverly Hills Hotel or Hotel Bel-Air would be fun. SLS is much more trendy and younger - I am not a fan of the food at their restaurant Bazaar but could be fun for drinks. Musso & Frank in Hollywood has been around forever and it's still good for classic, Continental food. Sawtelle is a street in West L.A. that is known for its Asian restaurants. My favorite on Sawtelle is actually one of the few non-Asian restaurants, Flores/Ladie's Gunboat Society. Petit Trois is a quirky place in Hollywood with incredible French bistro food at reasonable places. Enjoy your visit!

Catch & Release - anyone been?

Catch & Release was one of the worst restaurants I have eaten at all year. Only the roll and the fries were edible. Disappointed as I really wanted to like it.
