Sawtelle help

I have had really delicious lunches and dinners at Ladies' Gunboat Society/Flores recently. Bar Hayama is always good. Heard Butcher's Dog is great. I am looking forward to trying it. Used to like Plan Check but it's just too heavy.

Petit Trois has amazing French Fries. They are also good at Laddie's Gunboat/Flores on Sawtelle if you request them well done.

Chow worthy food in the most unexpected places

Aliki's Greek Taverna by LAX is quite divey and adjoined to a motel. They serve delicious Mediterranean food. Nothing unique or extraordinary but everything is super tasty. They also sell to many of the local farmers markets and carry a large selection of their hummus and other dips.

Old School Italian in the Valley

Thank you for the suggestions.Turns out our friend who asked for old school Italian wanted to go to Miceli's in Hollywood. It was better than I expected. Certainly not memorable and I do not plan on returning anytime soon but the Chicken Parmesan was very good. Kitschy place with hundreds of hanging Chianti bottles and singing waiters. They actually say they are the oldest restaurant in Hollywood. Apparently Musso Frank closed for several years some time ago (before reopening)so Miceli's claims that distinction.

Anguilla Trip Report

Just returned from ten days on this lovely island. The food was fantastic! Not one bad meal. The fish was particularly wonderful.
Our favorites, in no particular order

E's Oven - Excellent, local food in a casual home setting.
Veya - Quite special. Great meal and lovely "tree house" atmosphere
Blanchard's - Delicious and lovely
Blanchard's Beach Shack - Fantastic, super casual lunch right on the sand
Tasty's - Local and delicious.
Picante - Basic Mexican but better than anything in L.A.
Jacala - Wonderful lunch - great lobster club
Geraud's - excellent bakery

Old School Italian in the Valley

Looking for a red sauce Italian in the San Fernando Valley - old fashioned New York style but very good. Ideas?

Ingo's Tasty Diner - Santa Monica

Enjoyed a delicious dinner at the brand new Ingo's Diner on Wilshire in Santa Monica. We enjoyed our food more than at their sister restaurant The Misfit.

Food and service were great although it does not resemble a diner in any way - other than the fact that there are booths.
We started with very good deviled eggs. I had snapper with forbidden rice that was seasoned perfectly and tasted very fresh. Truly delicious. I tasted the chopped salad and it was also very good. Our waitress was fantastic.

The only clue from the waitstaff that the restaurant is new was the fact that several waiters and waitresses continued to circle the room in a row doing virtually nothing. It was a bit odd. They have a Happy Hour until 7:00pm but it's only drinks at this point. The menu is limited (burgers, salads, steak, fish...) but will expand soon. They will begin serving breakfast and lunch soon also. A welcome addition to the neighborhood!

Top 5 Downtown L A?

Due to ridiculous traffic getting to DTLA from The Westside (what else is new) we parked once and went to Kendall's at The Music Center. It was surprisingly very good. The Opera was fantastic! Enjoy your weekend.

Top 5 Downtown L A?

You are too funny J.L! Any ideas? Just looking for a decent meal before the Opera that's not a production. Taking my daughter to the Opera as part of her Birthday present and we already did the long, birthday dinner at Mastro's in Malibu on her actual Birthday.

Baltaire in Brentwood

Baltaire is finally open in the former Cheesecake Factory location on San Vicente in Brentwood. It's a gorgeous space that features a lovely indoor outdoor patio with comfortable tables. I had lunch there today and was quite happy. You never would have known by the smooth service that they have only been open three days. I shared both a Greek Salad and a Lobster Cobb. They were both fresh and delicious and the dressing was perfect. I am looking forward to returning for dinner soon.

Palm Springs Report

Just returned from a weekend in the desert. Once again Chowhound came through.
We enjoyed a wonderful lunch at Wilma and Frieda. The highlight for me was their New England Clam Chowder. I rarely find the red chowder on the West Coast and it's even rarer that it's this delicious. Their turkey club salad was excellent as well.
Dinner at Copley's was perfect. We sat on the lovely patio. Our waiter was terrific and the food was spot on. Their New York steak was the best steak I have had in quite some time. I wold love to find a similar restaurant in L A.
Sunday brunch at Lulu was surprisingly good. I had heard mixed things but it looked like a fun place for breakfast. I had scrambled eggs with Boursin cheese and I now want to try this at home. My husband had corned beef hash and said it was fantastic. The only mediocre meal was at Roc's Firehouse in Palm Desert. We wanted something quick and easy before our ride back but the service was the worst and the food was pretty bad. Roc's Firehouse was NOT a Chowhound recommendation. All in all a fun weekend filled with delicious food. Thank You Chowhound!

I am recommending restaurants in Lahaina to friends who have never been. Are Kimo's and Leilani's decent? I liked them many years ago. They have children so looking for something on the water that will appeal to the family.

Looking for a restaurant in Santa Monica that would work for a rehearsal dinner in August for 30 guests. A private room would be nice but not necessary. Not Mexican or Asian.

Weekend Trip Report

Stayed in Del Mar (from L A) last weekend and enjoyed delicious meals.

We started with a wonderful dinner at Cafe Secret in Del Mar. The Peruvian food was delicious and the cafe is truly charming. The flavors were bold but not overpowering. Loved the patio and the service was perfect.

Brunch at The Grand Del Mar was fine. We sat outside and it was a gorgeous day. The food wasn't special but it was certainly decent and the lovely gardens were in bloom so it was quite pleasant.

Dinner at Parkhouse Eatery in University Heights was excellent. We sat on their heated porch and had a fantastic waitress. My pan roasted half chicken was delicious. It's a cross between baked chicken and a chicken stew with a flavorful broth and great vegetables. My husband had the mixed grill with three types of fish and our friend who lives in San Diego (and recommended the restaurant) had the meatloaf. They both raved about their meals. Delicious Sangria added a flavorful touch to the evening. Would love to find a place like this in L A.

Brunch at The Patio in Mission Hills was a pleasant way to begin our Sunday. Such a great space and the food was good. The Farmers Market in Hillcrest followed but we were too full to try the food. Definitely need to return as it looked amazing.

All in all - great meals and gorgeous weather. Looking forward to our next weekend visit.
