Santa Monica

Looking for a restaurant in Santa Monica that would work for a rehearsal dinner in August for 30 guests. A private room would be nice but not necessary. Not Mexican or Asian.

Weekend Trip Report

Stayed in Del Mar (from L A) last weekend and enjoyed delicious meals.

We started with a wonderful dinner at Cafe Secret in Del Mar. The Peruvian food was delicious and the cafe is truly charming. The flavors were bold but not overpowering. Loved the patio and the service was perfect.

Brunch at The Grand Del Mar was fine. We sat outside and it was a gorgeous day. The food wasn't special but it was certainly decent and the lovely gardens were in bloom so it was quite pleasant.

Dinner at Parkhouse Eatery in University Heights was excellent. We sat on their heated porch and had a fantastic waitress. My pan roasted half chicken was delicious. It's a cross between baked chicken and a chicken stew with a flavorful broth and great vegetables. My husband had the mixed grill with three types of fish and our friend who lives in San Diego (and recommended the restaurant) had the meatloaf. They both raved about their meals. Delicious Sangria added a flavorful touch to the evening. Would love to find a place like this in L A.

Brunch at The Patio in Mission Hills was a pleasant way to begin our Sunday. Such a great space and the food was good. The Farmers Market in Hillcrest followed but we were too full to try the food. Definitely need to return as it looked amazing.

All in all - great meals and gorgeous weather. Looking forward to our next weekend visit.

La Canada Flintridge

Thanks ElsieDee - looks very interesting. I made reservations at Dish but will remember this for another evening.

La Canada Flintridge

Thanks Medrite - this looks great! The kind of place I always look for (and rarely find) on the Westside.

Is The Ladies Gunboat Society still worth going to?

I had two recent meals here. One was just okay but the other was excellent. I agree with Jack Flash - not sure why the menu still states that it's best to eat family style as the entrees really aren't easy to share. They are large enough to share just not food that's easily portioned. The steak was fantastic as were all of the sides and appetizers. I had dinner there last week - we were a party of six and all enjoyed every bite. The patio is quite nice and the service was wonderful.

Westwood Village update

Thank You for this great list!
I live close to Westwood and I had no idea Simplethings opened. I have enjoyed the soup and salad at their other location and ordered the mini pies for parties.
I would like a closer Tender Greens. It's a quick healthy option.
We tried Garlos and were not impressed with the Aussie Pies although they were very nice.
Anxiously awaiting The Boiling Crab.
Westwood certainly has potential. It will be interesting to see what happens.

Weekend in Del Mar

Visiting your lovely town for a long weekend. Any favorites for breakfast, lunch and dinner? Happy to drive a bit. Not looking for anything too formal and nothing Asian or Mexican. Thanks in advance!

Med Cafe - Marina del Rey

Med Cafe on Washington Blvd (a couple of blocks from the beach) is a nice change from the other restaurants in the area. They specialize in Mediterranean food. Their dips are tasty and light, the Mediterranean burger with roasted peppers & Feta Cheese is delicious and the homemade dressing on their salads is wonderful. It's casual and easy, the price is reasonable and they have a nice little patio.
Welcome to the neighborhood Med Cafe!

Cheese (West LA and Northwest suburbs)

Also, Artisan Cheese Shop is a wonderful little cheese shop and cafe that serves delicious cheese plates, salads and sandwiches in Studio City. It's just about the only place I will go to the valley for.

Sherry Yards New Bakery

I originally heard it will be in Culver City by Helms Bakery. I am not sure if that's changed. I will ask around.

Bachi Burger - Sawtelle

Has anyone tried it yet? I was there today with my daughter. We waited over fifteen minutes for a table - even though there were several empty tables. We were then told the burgers would take 25 minutes to a half hour. My daughter ordered a plain, regular burger and the waitress said they are not yet equipped to make plain burgers! We had lunch someplace else.

Clusi Batusi

Sorry to say that Clusi Batusi on Sawtelle has closed.I very much enjoyed the dinner at our Chow Meetup as well as the times I have had salad and pizza there since. We need more non Asian places in the neighborhood.

I'm Going Deaf Eating Out in LA

Agreed westsidegal and manku on going early - also sitting outside is typically quieter if that option is available.

Today is my lucky day, Ike's Place Westwood soft opens with free sandwiches!

Is there a "must try" sandwich here? Happy that Westwood finally seems to be on the rebound.

DTLA - near Staples

Thank You for the suggestions - Friday traffic was not pleasant so we ended up eating at Staples. I have added these restaurants to my list. Wood Spoon and Rivera sound fantastic. Need to get down there more often. I have enjoyed Colori Kitchen in the past.

I'm Going Deaf Eating Out in LA

I plan events and weddings so I am particularly sensitive to keeping music on the quiet side during dinner when guests prefer to speak to one another. I agree that many restaurants are much too loud. On top of the diners talking (and as people drink they get even louder) many restaurants play background music with strong bass that makes everything even louder. I believe the restaurants think this music creates a buzz but in actuality it can be quite annoying. The loudest restaurants I have encountered are Red Medicine, Bottega Louie, Gjelina and Toscana. I haven't had the pleasure of Playa Provisions.

I'm Going Deaf Eating Out in LA

Agreed that it's getting worse. I plan events and weddings and I always make sure the room is reasonably quiet during dinner. What surprises me is that many restaurants play loud basey music so guests talk even louder. I believe they think it creates a fun buzz but it can really be annoying if you are trying to have a conversation.

Connie and Ted's - pleasantly surprised

It is difficult to find Ipswich Clams (Steamers) on the west coast and these are as good as any I have eaten back east. Love all of their simple dishes but not a fan of anything complicated. The fried whole belly clams are very good as well as the three types of chowder. Baked clams try too hard (pesto?) and would be better in a Casino or Oreganata style. Lobster Roll is great as well as the fries. Love the patio as it's quieter than inside. Wish they would open a second location a bit further west. I could eat those steamers twice a week.

I read on Google that it is not really the Original. I do not believe everything I read. Has anyone else heard this?

Avenue Italy - West L A

Pleasantly surprised by my lunch at Avenue Italy yesterday. We were a party of four and each of us thoroughly enjoyed our lunch. From soup to their house salad with grilled chicken, to chicken picatta - everything was fresh and delicious. They were very nice and it was comfortable. I am looking forward to returning for dinner. I hope they do well and stay for many years. it's on the first floor of Olympic Collection at Olympic and Sawtelle.

South Jersey Seafood

Knife & Fork and Docs are great. Looking for something much more casual and local - like Crabby's or Smith's Clam Bar or Oyster Creek. A place you would find on The Cape.

South Jersey Seafood

Thanks jetermacaw. Docs is great and a must visit each summer. I had a mediocre meal at Harry''s but I assume it was an off night as I have heard great things. I am looking for a place more like Smith's Clam Bar (Smitty's) or Oyster Creek

South Jersey Seafood

Visiting from the West Coast and looking for the quintessential seafood experience. Nothing fancy, just great local seafood - preferably on the water. Love the hard shells at Crabbys and like Smith's Clam Bar. Love the atmosphere at Oyster Creek, but the food - not so much. Staying in Ventnor (near AC) but willing to drive.
