I'm Going Deaf Eating Out in LA

Agreed westsidegal and manku on going early - also sitting outside is typically quieter if that option is available.

Today is my lucky day, Ike's Place Westwood soft opens with free sandwiches!

Is there a "must try" sandwich here? Happy that Westwood finally seems to be on the rebound.

DTLA - near Staples

Thank You for the suggestions - Friday traffic was not pleasant so we ended up eating at Staples. I have added these restaurants to my list. Wood Spoon and Rivera sound fantastic. Need to get down there more often. I have enjoyed Colori Kitchen in the past.

I'm Going Deaf Eating Out in LA

I plan events and weddings so I am particularly sensitive to keeping music on the quiet side during dinner when guests prefer to speak to one another. I agree that many restaurants are much too loud. On top of the diners talking (and as people drink they get even louder) many restaurants play background music with strong bass that makes everything even louder. I believe the restaurants think this music creates a buzz but in actuality it can be quite annoying. The loudest restaurants I have encountered are Red Medicine, Bottega Louie, Gjelina and Toscana. I haven't had the pleasure of Playa Provisions.

Agreed that it's getting worse. I plan events and weddings and I always make sure the room is reasonably quiet during dinner. What surprises me is that many restaurants play loud basey music so guests talk even louder. I believe they think it creates a fun buzz but it can really be annoying if you are trying to have a conversation.

Connie and Ted's - pleasantly surprised

It is difficult to find Ipswich Clams (Steamers) on the west coast and these are as good as any I have eaten back east. Love all of their simple dishes but not a fan of anything complicated. The fried whole belly clams are very good as well as the three types of chowder. Baked clams try too hard (pesto?) and would be better in a Casino or Oreganata style. Lobster Roll is great as well as the fries. Love the patio as it's quieter than inside. Wish they would open a second location a bit further west. I could eat those steamers twice a week.

Villa Italian (culver city) closed?

I ate there once and it was barely edible.

Any ideas for dinner (non-chain) not far from Staples?

I read on Google that it is not really the Original. I do not believe everything I read. Has anyone else heard this?

Avenue Italy - West L A

Pleasantly surprised by my lunch at Avenue Italy yesterday. We were a party of four and each of us thoroughly enjoyed our lunch. From soup to their house salad with grilled chicken, to chicken picatta - everything was fresh and delicious. They were very nice and it was comfortable. I am looking forward to returning for dinner. I hope they do well and stay for many years. it's on the first floor of Olympic Collection at Olympic and Sawtelle.

South Jersey Seafood

Knife & Fork and Docs are great. Looking for something much more casual and local - like Crabby's or Smith's Clam Bar or Oyster Creek. A place you would find on The Cape.

South Jersey Seafood

Thanks jetermacaw. Docs is great and a must visit each summer. I had a mediocre meal at Harry''s but I assume it was an off night as I have heard great things. I am looking for a place more like Smith's Clam Bar (Smitty's) or Oyster Creek

South Jersey Seafood

Visiting from the West Coast and looking for the quintessential seafood experience. Nothing fancy, just great local seafood - preferably on the water. Love the hard shells at Crabbys and like Smith's Clam Bar. Love the atmosphere at Oyster Creek, but the food - not so much. Staying in Ventnor (near AC) but willing to drive.

Southend looks good. Not sure why the sarcasm was necessary. Happy 4th everyone!

Casa Ado - Marina del Rey

CDR is okay - I have never had a great meal there but it's certainly better than most in the Marina. I didn't care for Settebello. What is South End?

Capri & Positano

Thank you all so much. It's our first time to this part of Italy and I am getting excited just reading your posts. We are happy with less formal places with local flavor. Anything on or overlooking the sea is a huge plus.

Capri & Positano

Searched the board but many of the posts were older. Looking for local type places with great food. If you had to choose the quintessential Positano restaurant and the quintessential Capri restaurant, what would they be? I will be in each city three days.

Paris - Classic Old School Dinner

Maude

Agreed - the ravioli was good but not one of my favorite courses. As far as the key ingredient (rhubarb in my case) It is subtly incorporated into each course and Maude does not feel like a concept restaurant at all.

Food Halls - Farmers Markets - Great Shops in Paris

I am only going to be in Paris for a few days. Love Borough Market in London - is there anything similar? Would also appreciate recs for great shops selling food related items. Is there a list of local Farmers Markets?

Maude

I am sure peas were great and morels will be as well. The rhubarb was incorporated so well into each course and the evening didn't feel gimmicky or like it was trying too hard at all. Yes the duck was amazing as well as the dessert. There were four of us and there was not a single item that was not delicious.

Maude

I thoroughly enjoyed my dinner at Maude last night. This month each of the nine courses incorporates rhubarb. Every course was interesting and flavorful.

A few favorites -
Asparagus with brown butter croutons and rhubarb vinaigrette
Branzino with rhubarb, fennel, pickled peppers & squash blossoms
Duck breast with leeks, beets, rhubarb and savory granola
Ginger Parfait - vanilla rhubarb gratin, salted honey & almond streusel

The staff was competent and friendly, the rooms is pleasant and the pace of the meal was spot on.

Paris - Classic Old School Dinner

Visiting Paris for a few days and I haven't been in many years. I am sure classic French bistros have been discussed too many times to count on this board but when I looked them up most threads were old.
I am looking for the classic bistro with really good food. It doesn't need to be super creative or inventive though. I live in Los Angeles so I am not looking for another creative, small plate restaurant. I would love classic onion soup, mussels, steak frites etc in a charming classic environment.

"Endangered Species" Restaurants: Any Must-Go's Before They Shutter Soon?

I doubt you care but just in case - Kate Mantillini in B H is closing in a couple weeks. Their hot turkey sandwich happens to be delicious.
