HATCH CHILE ROASTING 2008 Mark you're calendar

In the meantime... the Albertson's in Los Feliz has the little tubs of Bueno's chopped & frozen stuff. Which I used to make my own version of the legendary Blake's Lotaburger.

The new Home in S'Lake: Anyone Been?

Drove by the new spot for "Home" in Silver Lake... at Riverside and Fletcher in Silver Lake. The sign said "open". Anyone been? And did they keep the old Rudolpho's bar? That space was pretty cool... so I'm wondering if they've kept the bar area going.

Carthay Circle Area?

Any decent restaurants within striking distance from the Carthay Circle area? (Crescent Heights, Olympic, Wilshire.)

Lookin for the best taco truck

I "third" Taco Zone. North of Sunset Blvd (on Alvarado). I'd die without it... and wish they would jar and sell their red sauce.

High Five to Triple D

My favorite show on the FN, for sure. I wanna eat at every place they've covered... and dream about the Penguin Drive In in North Carolina.

I know that Guy drives some people crazy, but I really think he's providing a valuable service... by covering all the great spots. It's getting harder and harder to find authentic mom & pop's in this Disneyfied world, so kudos to GF and FN.

Albano's Pizza on Melrose closed?

Swear to god... I saw Anthony from Albano's driving a catering truck onto the Paramount lot th' other day. (While I was picketing - sadly - but that's, uh, another story... obviously.)

Maybe he started another business?

Rick's "Best Food in L.A."

Agreed re: breakfast (a great value, methinks), and love their breakfast burrito.

It's always packed on Saturday and Sunday mornings: That oughta tell you something...

I'm gonna get slammed on this board for saying this... but I love the down and dirty oysters at the Gumbo Pot in the Farmer's Market. About a buck each, and you can drown 'em with hot sauce. With a pitcher of beer from EB's or the 326 bar... that's a great happy hour.

Dusty's, Blair's, Canele...or???

Canele. Blair's is a bit over-priced for what you get (IMHO).

Not sure why Canele gets bashed around on the Chowhound boards, but I love it.

Having said that... you could do a lot worse than Gingergrass. And if it's crowded, have them call you while you get a drink at Silver Lake Wine across the street.

good burritos in Echo Park tonight (Sat eve)

I know this is too late, but... here's a tip for the future.

The "Taco Zone" truck on Alvarado - north of Sunset, next to Von's - makes a mean burrito. And the best tacos in the area, IMHO. It's been covered many times around this board, and on Bandini's blog Tacohunt.

New Vietnamese in Atwater?

Drove by Viet on Friday night (after a WGA happy hour at the Griffin - $1 drinks with a card): Looked like they were having a large opening party.

Did anyone go?

Gordon's latest show

Drove by a couple of times this week... and the place was always EMPTY.

Not a good sign.

Diners, Drive Ins and Dives

Definitely my favorite show on the FN. At first, I was a bit put off by Guy and his schtick. But now, I'm in. I think he does a fantastic job... simply because he loves this kind of food. (So do I.)

His genuine enthusiasm for classic American comfort food is a big part of the show's success... and it makes me want to visit just about every place I've seen on the show.

Next up for me... Jaybee's BBQ in Gardena, CA.

(I love Alton, but I didn't need to hear him speak in esoteric terms re: "road" food.)

Jaybee's Bar-B-Q in Gardena

Jaybee's Bar-B-Q in Gardena: This place was just featured on the Food Network (Diners, Drive-Ins and Dives).

Anyone been?

Katsuya Hollywood - A Pleasant Surprise for Lunch

Went with a group on Thursday. Had a fantastic lunch... but the most annoying waiter EVER. The guy came up with nicknames for a few members of our group, and never stopped doing that bad schtick. He even threw himself into a few of our conversations, and seemed to be auditioning for us with every visit to the table. (Which was strange, because we're all going on strike tomorrow.)

Dude? Don't. Take the order, exchange a few pleasantries, and get out of the way. The bad schtick nearly ruined lunch.

Having said that, the food was superb. Each dish took our minds away from the lame waiter.

Fav Silverlake Sun night restaurant?

Nothing wrong with Gingergrass. I think Silver Lake Wine (across the street from GG) is having an event tonight, too.

El Chavo?

What's the latest on the re-birth of El Chavo? Food quality, decor (I hear they're gonna re-do the patio), yada yada. Go...

Best donuts around Los Feliz?

Tang's... at Franklin and Canyon. In a mini-mall across the street from Gelson's. Solid mini-mall donuts. Always filled with a weird assortment of slightly crazed locals. (Just had a chocolate iced donut from Daily Donuts - not bad, either.)

Italian in Palm Springs?

Visiting PS this weekend... and need recs for a simple Italian restaurant. A solid trattoria... family style... whatever. (If you are familiar with L.A., something like Angeli or the old Farfalla on La Brea.)

Thanks in advance.

Nice mexican dinner in sherman oaks / encino area?

I think we can all agree that Ernie's is "right out". (As the Pythons used to say.)

Nice mexican dinner in sherman oaks / encino area?

I say... do Tony's. The food is great, even though it is "hole-in-the-wall-y". If you do, BYOB. Then, head somewhere decent for drinks...

The food at Tony's definitely beats Casa Vega, Alferedo's, and Don Cuco's, IMHO.

Astroburger, melrose or santa monica??

Santa Monica Blvd, for sure. Little comparison, IMHO. Not really sure if they're owned by the same people: Anyone?

Love the breakast burrito, the patty melt, even the gyro.

Best Taco Stands in LA

The "Taco Zone" truck on Alvarado... north of Sunset. Next to the Von's in Echo Park. Superior tacos after 7pm.

Heading to Nantucket (from Los Angeles) for the first time and am looking for some quintessential Nantucket restaurants and taverns. Mom and pop, casual, lobster... an old pub.

Any suggestions?

New Mexico green chiles in San Diego

Closest "Bueno" stops I've found to SoCal? The Smith's (grocery store) in Mesquite, NV (also carries "Sadie's" salsa, a popular restaurant in ABQ), and the Smith's stores in Phoenix.

The Smith's stores in Vegas might carry Bueno... they should... but I'm not sure.

I'm running low, myself. (I just finished off a tub of "hot" stuff from the ABQ Tortilla Company.)

Best Breakfast Burritos

I'm a big fan of Rick's breakfast burrito... at Fletcher & Riverside (between Silver Lake & Atwater Village).

The Astro Burger on Santa Monica & Gardner has a decent one, too.

Canele in Atwater.

Now... I'm thinking about their Beef Bourguignon. And my work is suffering.

Korean BBQ for Beginners

I'm a fan of Gui Rim, on 6th (just west of Western). Very basic Korean BBQ, very "mom and pop." Friendly service, and light on the wallet.
