The Blue Moose Cafe/Shop - Brattleboro VT

An update on this great location - they have switched the café from the back of the store to the very front and made the café portion full table service for lunch and dinner. The shop is still there with all the great gift items, kitchen gadgets and area rugs, but the café is now front and center and totally worth a visit!

Our lunch yesterday consisted of the Blue Moose burger (cooked to order, on a sourdough bun w/horseradish Dijon mayo). Medium rare was more like medium, but considering how juicy the burger was we did not consider it overcooked at all. All sandwiches and burgers come with a small side salad of Italian marinated vegetables w/olives and capers. The burger was even more delicious when dipped into the leftover dressing.

From the appetizer menu we also sampled the semolina cakes (two cakes with a nice tomato basil sauce and chiffonade of basil over the top) and the meatballs (3 meatballs w/same tomato basil sauce and basil topping served with crostini). Both apps were delicious and the meatballs were so tender and probably the same mix as the burger. Moretti beers for both of us went well with the meal.

We finished with the housemade gelato (chocolate and caramel) and two espressos. A decadent meal for lunch, yes, but due to odd work hours for me, lunch is usually my dinner.

I didn't peak at the dinner menu but there is an expanded menu for dinner and they serve that Wed thru Saturday night. Please support this great business that is not only a great place to shop but putting out really tasty food!

My husband and I love Miriam's in Windsor. Husband and wife team and the husband cooks African (via Tanzania) food. Delicious! They also have a nice vegetarian selection and some blander fare as well - steak sandwiches, etc. I prefer the curries and the African menu.

Ice cream stop in southern vermont I 91 or VT 9 - WRJ to Bennington

The Putney General Store has been rebuilt and is beautiful, but they don't have ice cream by the scoop. They do make great sandwiches and have very good Chinese food as well.

I like the creamees at Hidden Acres in Dummerston which is south of Putney on RT 5, its from a VT comany (I want to say St Albans, but not sure) and they are very good. The scoop ice cream is Hershey's and fine but nothing you can't get a bunch of other places.

The Chelse Royal on Western Ave/RT 9 in W Brattleboro has an ice cream window with scoops, creamees, sundaes, etc and is usually pretty popular. I wouldn't eat lunch at the Chelsea Royal though.

New Vietnamese in Hadley, MA -- Saigon Banh Mi

Just to be clear - summer rolls are not fried, they are made with fresh ingredients (that vary) and have a soft rice paper wrapper; spring rolls are made with wonton skins, filled with various veggies and meat, and deep fried. I believe the comment about frozen items was referencing the spring rollls not the summer rolls, not really possible to freeze the summer rolls...

With that out of the way, I'd love to try this place, but I'm very partial to Vinh Chau at the X in Springfield. Also, in Brattleboro VT there is a lunch truck doing a very good chicken pho, banh mi and bun, and I don't have to drive all the way to Hadley for it. Also, when I drive to Hadley its usually for Mi Tierra so it would be such a difficult decision to give up tacos and margaritas for "pretty good" pho.

Humble Kitchen Food Truck - Brattleboro

Good food to be had at a new food truck parked in the Harmony Lot in Brattleboro that describes itself as providing Vietnamese street food. The menu is limited but has all the favorites that people who love Vietnamese food will love - Banh Mi, Pho and Bun (although the menu lists the pho as "noodle soup" and bun as "noodle bowl").

Went for lunch on their 3rd day open and the food was very good. I had the chicken pho which came with all the trimmings - chili, lime, basil, cilantro, even mint which was a nice addition. My husband had the banh mi with pork pate and sliced pork. Both lunches were very good - one of the best chicken phos I've had.

We also had a ginger-basil limeades to drink and mango wontons for dessert. The drink was refreshing and not too sweet and the mango wontons had a dusting of five spice power and sugar on top - yum!

There are variations on all the menu items for vegan and vegetarian options (i.e. shiitake mushroom pho that I'm eager to try next) and there are also the usual tofu options for all three main dishes. Their Facebook page showed a photo of steamed ginger-pear puddings that looked amazing, so I'm hoping they have those when I go next...

If you're in the area please check out the food and support this business...a welcome new option for something good to eat!

Mariam's - African food in Windsor VT

It seems this restaurant has been around since some time in 2010 and I was totally oblivious all this time. My husband and I tried the food here on a Thursday night and were so happy we did! Unfortunately, that night they did not have the goat curry which is what we originally made the drive for, however, we were told they just recently found a local source for goat meat and it would be back on the menu very soon.

We started with the appetizer sampler, which features fried plantains, spicy potato balls, meat and vegie samosa and a cucumber mint dipping sauce. All delicious! Since no goat curry, we opted for two different chicken dishes - boneless chicken chunks cooked in a spiced yogurt sauce and a boneless chicken breast with a spinach sauce. Both so different and so tasty.

The restaurant has a full bar, some South African wines and several beer options as well. We were too stuffed for dessert, so skipped that and took home our dinner leftovers.

We plan to head back very soon and hopefully order the goat curry; another couple sitting near us were commenting on how delicious their food was and that the lamb curry was very tender, so we'll have to try that as well on a return trip.

Note: Mariam's is closed Sunday and Wednesday; open for dinner all other days and open for lunch on Friday and Saturday (according to their website).

I love, love, love the Vietnamese and Mali (African) food at the farmer's market. Linh's serves pho and bun and both are delicious. The Mali-an food is so tasty and addictive, usually a peanut chicken and a beef dish. I'm not a fan of the Thai stand to the right that you mentioned but love the dim sum served near Linh's, they serve a steamed dumpling with local organic greens and that wonderful spicy/vinegary dipping sauce.

Waterbury, VT ice cream?

Its Sakura Sushi and I second Morganna's recommendation. They have two locations, I think the other one is in Burlington and is a bigger restaurant. I used to drive to Williston often for work and loved, loved, loved their spicy tuna sashimi appetizer. I miss it!

Luna Azul

Had dinner there a few weeks ago and the food was really tasty. I think that they are basically serving Mexican street food and deconstructing it and/or serving refined versions on lovely plates but its basis (at least for the dishes we ordered) is street food. Fish tacos were yummy, crispy with a cabbage slaw and pickled red onion. Deconstructed pulled pork tacos also very tasty and layed out beautifully on the plate with slices of avocado and pickled red onion and some crumbled cotija. It was just hard for us to pay top dollar for prettified street food, but I recognize that a Main St address is high rent and don't begrudge too much. It just means that we will only eat there very occasionally.

Cocktails were delicious, however, one pet peeve of mine is when Mexican restaurants serve margaritas that are ordered on the rocks on those ridiculous shallow bowl shaped glasses that are clearly better suited to frozen drinks. A margarita ordered on the rocks should be served in a rocks glass in my opinion.

I would skip dessert next time; they aren't really worth the calories or the cost. I've had much better Tres Leches and the chocolate cake made with Mexican chocolate was dry.

Definitely more hits than misses but too pricey for frequent visits...

"Fat Franks," Bellows Falls, VT - Go there NOW!

I guess I never updated with more recent visits but...love, love this place. I still only get the dogs but their chili is just the way I like it - no beans and very good. I recommend going for the Fat Frank dog because you get a more substantial bun than with the Skinny Frank and it holds up better with lots of toppings.

Brattleboro nice vibe

Three Stones is excellent. 39 Main is no more and I think that Alici's Bistro is no more as well (there were signage and parking issues with the town). I also concur that Thai Bamboo is delicious. Metropolis has great drinks but has been dead the 2x that I've been. For great pizza try Frankie's on Eliot. Panda North, north of the roundabout, has very good Chinese.

Exceptional or just plain good for lunch in Bennington Area?

The fish and chips place is good (although the chips tend to be soggy, which I like but most people don't). The fish and shrimp is crispy and delicious.

But I prefer a place around the corner from there called Izabella's. Its a little sandwiches and salads cafe, but with a creative twist that is delicious.

I think its an absolute shame that there is nothing in Southern VT. Its primarily centered around the Burlington and Montpelier areas with only a few exceptions. I'm starting to build some resentment about the lack of inclusion for where I live and eat in "VT" activities and events.

Ice Cream in New Hampshire?

Slick's Homemade on Rte 302 between Woodsville and Bath NH. Really, really good homemade ice cream. I think their stand usually opens on Mother's Day but when there's nice whether they've opened earlier. They're also listed in the NH Made directory online.

I'm a fan of their banana splits...

Overview of Springfield / Holyoke / Lower Pioneer Valley

I have been to both and prefer Vinh Chau. Several years ago the Pho Saigon menu wasn't as large as Vinh Chau but now they have comparable menus. The initial reason why I prefered Vinh Chau was the diverse menu but the continuing reason why I prefer Vinh Chau is the service and that I get what I order. I like all the bits in the pho (tendon, liver, etc.) and Pho Saigon will never give me the pho or bun that I order and their excuse (on more than one occasion) has been "oh we didn't think you would like it." I like a restaurant to give me what I order and not Americanize it.
